Connect to Xbox Live for less than $100

I want to get on Xbox Live, but I don't really want to spend $100 on the wireless adapter, and my house's layout is not conducive to running a super long ethernet cable from the the 360 to my router/modem.

Any ideas? I tried using my laptop to share its wireless connection with the 360 by plugging the laptop into the 360, but it always fails the DNS test.

Help me, PA; you're my only hope.

Did you bridge the connection between your laptops wifi and your laptops ethernet?

all you have to do is unshare both connections, highlight both of them, right click and choose bridge.

I have the following connections under network connections:

    1) Wireless Connection (Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection)
    2) LAN Connection (Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet)
    3) 1394 Connection (1394 Net Adapter)

I tried bridging the first two, and it didn't pass the IP address check. Should I have bridged connection 1 and 3 instead?

You can buy the original Xbox wireless adapter on ebay for about $40 (at least that's how much it was for me at the time). I'd go with that.

    this.

It works like a charm, just as good as the wireless adapter if not better, and there's a million ebay sellers offering them new in box for $40 and under.

You can also buy a Linksys WRT54G router, flash it with DD-WRT, and use that as a bridge. Slightly more expensive than the oXbox adapter, and with more headaches, but still the next best solution.

Do you know where I can download the micro version of the DD WRT firmware? I can not find it for the life of me on their website.

Huh, didn't know the oXbox adapter would work. Could've saved me some money. Aside from the options listed here you can check e-bay, I got the offical 360 adapter for $50.

I found this on another forum:
It was extremely easy, but the trick with that particular item, if I remember correctly, is that it had to be initiated with an original Xbox. After that, it would take anything online, as I've confirmed with a PS2.

Anyone know if this is true or not?

Nope, you don't need an original Xbox to set it up, the Xbox 360 wireless network setup tab will work just fine.

    Including official link:
    http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/connect/msmn740.htm

Also, one caveat, this adapter does NOT support WPA.
