BYOC and PC Tournament Information

This is a copy of the email I sent to all BYOC Registrants, only thanks to the magic of "de-publishing", this is a slightly more accurate (sorry, Garry Briggs) version.

Note the additional rules for the World of Warcraft tournament, and the change from 20 minutes to 30 minutes.

If you have any questions, you're encouraged to ask them.

--- Basic LAN Party Information ---

If you've never been to a lan party, be sure to bring the following equipment:

BYOC Badge (it should have a number in the top right corner)
Computer (it took me 3 lan parties to figure this out on my own)
Monitor
Keyboard
Mouse (only wired mice and keyboards are recommended for lan parties)
Mousepad
Ethernet Cable (10 feet should be sufficient, but it's better to have longer than shorter).
Power Cables
Power Strip
Headphones
Games CDs/DVDs, Windows CD, and backups for other programs you may need to install/reinstall.

It's a good idea to write or print that list out and check it as you pack your stuff.

While we will have Internet Access, it is strongly recommended that you update Steam before packing up your computer and download/install any and all patches you may need. Every minute you spend waiting for a download is one minute that could be spent turning your good friends and peers into Kibble.

It is also mandatory that you run virus protection on your computer before bringing it on our network. Any computers that are found with a virus will be immediately disconnected from the network until the matter is resolved.

Also note that while Internet access will be available, please download anything you'll need before arriving to PAX. Anyone using bittorrent style applications will be disconnected from the network.

--- Security Information ---

BigRed, the same beast of a man that kept your equipment safe last year, will be returning this year. Only this time, he's bringing some hardcore video surveillance equipment, so smile for the cameras! You will have to quickly register any computer and monitors that come into or out of the Computer Area. This is done for your own protection, so you can be free to leave your equipment to watch a panel, listen to a concert, play in a Console Tournament, or check out the Expo Hall. We've gone to great lengths to keep the check in and check out process as streamlined as possible, but do be patient. You can help us out by making sure your BYOC Badge is easily visible, as nobody without that badge will be allowed inside the BYOC room.

Also note that the building does close down at 2:00am on Friday and Saturday. Your equipment will stay safe there overnight as the PC room is locked up. At this point the doors are locked until the next morning.

While we will make every attempt to keep all equipment in the room safe, do be aware that there is little we can do to prevent ipods, portable game consoles, cd's, big wads of cash, and other small items from walking off. We strongly suggest you keep such items out of plain view and use some common sense when it comes to your own security.

--- Tournament Information ---

All tournaments except the World of Warcraft tournament are open to all users, BYOC and otherwise. However the freeplay computers available for tournament use are limited.

To sign up for any tournament, visit the PC Area (on the 4th floor). Tournament Signups sheets will be available. Make absolutely sure you are in the pc area when the tournament starts or you WILL be disqualified. In cases where a tournament begins before the doors open to non pre-reg's, you will have until 10:30 to get to the PC Area and not a minute later. Whenever possible, I strongly suggest getting to the PC Area no later than 15 minutes before the event is scheduled.

For team tournaments, your team must have a team captain and it is his/her job to keep track of your team. We will deal with the team captain, for the sake of avoiding a huge group around us, we will not deal with everyone on the team. Choose your captains carefully, and be sure to communicate with yourselves as much as possible.

If you would like to join a team, get to the tournament area 30 minutes early and we will have a designated area where we will direct anyone else looking for a team. Beyond that, finding a team will ultimately be your own responsibility.

Prizes will be handed out in the form of credits which you can trade in for a wide variety of hot loot we'll have in a redemption area. The prizes will come and go, so if for some bizarre reason you don't see something that catches your eye, you can wait a while for new stuff to come in.

It is an exceptionally high priority for our tournaments to run on schedule, and we will be entirely merciless when dealing with players coming in late or teams that can't keep track of their members. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the late. Consider yourself warned.

--- Games of the Hour ---

This year we'll be featuring Games of the Hour, which won't actually be games of the "hour", per say. The games of the hour will actually usually last about 3 hours. We'll be watching who participates in the Games of the Hours and randomly selecting names from the servers. Selected people will then compete with each other for the chance to win some super amazing swag. I will not even hint at the types of competitions these will be, however I will say they will be relatively immature competitions typically not directly related to computer gaming.

Nobody will be forced to participate in the Games of the Hour, but you'll probably have more fun if you do.

The schedule, while subject to change, is currently as follows:

Friday:

3:00pm - 6:00pm: Counter Strike: Source
6:00pm - 9:00pm: Battlefield 2
9:00pm - 10:00pm: Day of Defeat: Source
10:00pm - 1:00am: UT2k4

Saturday:

11:00am - 2:00pm: Starcraft / Dawn of War
2:00pm - 5:00pm: Dystopia / Source Forts
5:00pm - 8:00pm: Battlefield 2
8:00pm - 11:00pm: Counter Strike: Source
11:00pm - 1:00am: Quake 3: Arena

Sunday:

11:00am - 1:00pm: Day of Defeat: Source
1:00pm - 3:00pm: Tribes / Quake2 (Retro Hour)
3:00pm - 6:00pm: Counter Strike: Source

If there are other games you would like to see, by all means post so anyone else that agrees with you can voice their opinion accordingly. If any game gets a fair amount of support, I will oblige.

--- Case Mod Contest --- (Section written by Ranken Phile)

New to PAX this year will be a case mod contest, sponsored by CoolerMaster, Arctic Cooler, and TheBestCaseScenario.com. Have you done some custom work on your computer? Custom paint job, panel window, lighting, water cooling or a full-case conversion? Be sure to grab an entry form in the BYOC room. Judges will be on hand to view entries throughout the expo, and will award a number of prizes on Sunday.

--- Intranet Information ---

We will be have a local Intranet page setup. From this page you can communicate with others on a basic shoutbox, check on additional tournament information, link to the ftp server we will have on hand, view a list of the servers we have up and running (often that will have information as to what maps and how many players are in each server), and such. The address for this page should be http://pax

--- Voice Chat Information ---

Ventrilo is an official sponsor for us this year, and there will be a couple servers brought in. While we will have the client available on ftp, it is recommended that you download and install Ventrilo before you come to the event. You can download the client at www.ventrilo.com. Server address information will be available at PAX.

We are planning on having a projector displaying concert events, panels, and other events at pax. The audio for this will be piped through a Ventrilo host. Ventrilo servers will also be available for tournament and public game usage.

--- Staff Information ---

Partnering up with Penny Arcade this year is Mike "Shocker" Baum and his crew from Infernalan (www.infernalan.com). They host biannual lan parties, with the next one scheduled to take place on October 6th in Dupont, Washington (just south of Tacoma).

Our Tournament Admins are a dedicated team of highly trained professionals that can kill you with the bat of an eyelash (well, other than the UT2k4 admin), and they've been pulled from all corners of the world including Infernalan, LAN Party NorthWest (www.lanpartynw.com), and GoodGame Online Gaming Center in Salt Lake City (www.goodgameogc.com).

In regards to the Case Mod Contest, judging will take place throughout PAX. Prizes include computer cases, power supplies and lots of other great stuff from Cooler Master, Arctic Cooling and Seasonic, and is hosted by TheBestCaseScenario.com. Entry forms will be available in the BYOC room on Friday and Saturday, and must be turned in before the the closing of the BYOC room on Saturday. Final judging will take place Sunday, and prizes will be awarded once all of the judging has been completed.

Case mods will be judged on usefulness, aesthetics, difficulty, level of craftsmanship, and style. Have fun, and see you at PAX!

I wonder if the lack of response is any prediction of the BYOC attendance. I pre-reg'ed too late to get BYOC this year, but I remember last year (abysmal attendance for those who don't know... tons of no-shows). I'm wondering if I should bring my computer and hope for the best.

BYOC is oversold. You have very little chance of getting in.

I think its just becuase the majority of people who are going to byoc dont post on the forums.
PAX is huge but its only a small fraction of people that are actually active on these forums.

Yeah, I know. The oversold bit has been said a bunch of times. I wonder how much it's oversold. Last year I think there were 255 spots and I recall counting ~25 BYOCers at one point. Many were no shows... others checked in, but never stayed to play.

Anyway, I hope things go real well this year. Good luck!

are they still using drivers licences/state id's as a way to get into the freeplay computer area? or is there another way they are securing that room?

BigRed is right, but because I like taking a sentence and turning it into a novella, here's the long answer.

First of all, we're going to have way more freeplay computers this year. Way, way more computers. So understand we'll be able to get a lot more people freeplay time and it should cut significantly on lines we've had in the past.

We will have a line setup for use, but rather than having specific times when we clear out the entire room at once and fill it up, we're going to be assigning each person their own station then track how long that station is being used through a basic computer program.

When your 30 minutes is used up, we'll drag you out kicking and screaming (assuming there's someone else that would like to use your spot).

This will help assure that every person gets their fair 30 minutes (instead of the last people in the room getting a couple minutes less than the first people in). It's also going to be a lot easier for us to manage security as each person will be escorted in and out individually, and that means we can eliminate other steps we've had to take in the past, like collecting drivers licenses.

Could you please define "have way more free play computers" 10 seats? 20?

More is better. Im really curious on how much of a line I will be facing there at pax.

    Unfortunately we don't really know.

I mean, we know how many freeplay computers we have, but we won't have the space for them all combined with all the byoc signups.

So the number of freeplay computers we have will scale according to the number of byoc no-shows we have, and we can't really make very accurate guesses on that end.

We'll have some number between 10 and 80 more freeplay systems than we did last year. For reference, we had 72 machines last year.

The BYOC Badge = 3day pass with a number in the top corner. You'll need that, if your pass doesn't have a number, then we're going to have a problem.

    No there wont be space.

If you dont have a byoc number dont bring your own stuff as you wont be getting in. BYOC is oversold so if some noshows do happen, the freeplay area would be extended.

The freeplay thing is up to DiscoDasiy, but if they are usb, dont require drivers, and dont require a restart of the computer I dont personally see a problem with it.

If BigRed, our security chief extrordinaire, doesn't see a problem with it, I don't see a problem with it.

However we both reserve the right to change this policy if it becomes a problem.

Please, please, please plug original devices in before you leave the station so the next person finds the station exactly as you did.

I'm assuming we don't have to wait in line with our gear, we just bring it from the hotel room sometime after the doors open on Friday?

You said it's overbooked, I don't want to be marked as a no-show and lose my spot if I show up with my comp at 5 PM.

Also, one more question... I know it says wired mice are reccomended, but does reccomended mean required? The only good gaming mouse I have is a wireless, but I suppose I can grab a crappy mouse from my box-o-computer-parts before PAX if this is the case.

I think they are recommending wired mice for your own benefit. If you bring your wireless and the 5 guys around you do too, it's possible it won't work due to interference. I would suggest you bring both your preferred wireless and a wired backup.

Also if you screw around with the game config for your own stuff please restore it to default settings when your 30min is up.

    Denied:

Things that take up an obscene amount of space (if its more than the footprint of the stuff we have there then forget it)

1: If its okay with everyone we will be able to escort people in like last year to checkin for byoc and drop off their gear at a seat before the general pax opening on friday. YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO SET IT UP. Just allowed to check it all in with me, drop it off, and go resume your place in line. You will have enforcer escort in and out of the building.

Assuming we do this and are all done and ready before pax opens, ill be making my rounds along the line yelling for byoc people or ill just carry a big sign. Im 6'7" and have red hair so im not an easy person to miss.

2: It is indeed overbooked. It wont be until like 6-7pm on saturday that we start looking to see if theres any empty spots in byoc.

Best way is to just have it in your car and park at the mbc on the first day for easy unloading/loading. BYOC will fill quickly which means your choice of seats will go down quickly as well. If you are comming with friends (who are also in BYOC) and want garunteed spots to sit together, come early.

Also, and I can not stress this enough.... ONLY BYOC PEOPLE WILL BE LET INTO THE BYOC ROOM.

The only exception to that rule are special guests, sponsors (which are special guests too I assume), and press.

Thanks. My gaming rig is a laptop, so if I'll be able to ditch it before the doors actually open, I can just hold on to it in line till I see you. Sounds good.

    Sweet.

The checkin process will be quick anyway, so I sugguest that everyone just try and bring their stuff up asap.
If you wait too long there will be an asston of people around which will make it hard to move up to the 4th floor where byoc is at.

The security/checkin station will be in the same location as it was last year.

    Just to be sure:

The Game Of The Hour thing is in the freeplay area, right?

If so, I just blocked out 3 hours on my schedule. I will take on any and all comers in Dystopia, Saturday, 2 to 5 PM. Get in, half an hour, back in line. I am fully serious here.

If you have a byoc badge, you'll get in. No need to worry about that.

The Game of the Hour is for both freeplay and byoc, however some of the Games of the Hours won't be loaded on the freeplay as we need licenses for each game we put on there.

Dystopia, being a Source Mod, should be safe. Other games like Quake3 and Starcraft...not so much.

You can take up the space I'm saving by bringing a gaming laptop instead of a tower+monitor.

Whenever possible, please bring no greater than a 21" monitor. A 27" inch lcd tv is definitely too big, though. ;)

This isn't a concrete example of, "On Topic," but I figured it might be nice to reach out from the sprawling spawn-pits of noobism and represent my kind.

The deadline for pre-reg is over and (as I'm assuming from reading the topic here) that "BYOC" is scratch-tastically done with as well.

This might be somewhat of a request (on second thought, why did I put that second paragraph there?), but perhaps a bit more information about things like "BYOC" could be posted on the pre-reg details, on the PAX main site, or here on the forums beforehand.

I'm certain it's there, seeing as a grand myriad of people not on the forums are BYOC registered, but for some of us (hence: noobism), it was very hard to find information regarding this subject.

And, in retrospect, I suppose I could have just posted a topic months ago. But again with the noobism.

Do enjoy, and have mercy on me. :D

When pre-reg for PAX went live, on the site there was a Bring your Own Computer section for buying tickets on the pax page (through whatever ticket service was used). After it sold out, that was taken down.

Soo... the info was there when it wasnt sold out and you were able to aquire a byoc pass.

Ya, we could buy them, but some of us had no idea what we were buying having never attended before. I think what he is asking for it a leetle more info up ahead of time. I bought one but I really had no clue what I was buying - just got lucky.

It's a perfectly reasonable request. I agree, we were really late to get information out there, and it's largely my fault.

An event like this, however, is pretty fluid in implimentation. We've had a lot of significant changes in the last couple months, and I'd hate to unintentionally mislead people by giving them information that turns false. Some of these things I have control over, some Khoo has control over, and some nobody really has control over.

Is it better to release a little information that's pretty solid, or a lot of information, much of which will be tweaked or changed? *shrug*

But your point is received, try to get more (reliable) information out to the public sooner. And we'll try our best to improve on that next year.
