So the other day, I saw that
Universe at War: Earth Assault (PC) was on Amazon for $9. I thought about it for five minutes and then ordered it. I mean, it came to $14 with shipping and stuff, but that isn't even $15, you know? So I bought this game, and it shipped Monday and the expected delivery date was July 5, which is Saturday. But tracking says it's already been delivered, and my brother, whom I just called, says I did indeed get a package in the mail.
So I've got this new-fangled game and everything, but truth be told it was completely on a whim. I remember playing the demo of it a while ago, but I don't remember it too well. I'm stuck with it now, and I want to know what I've gotten myself into. I probably won't have time to play it until the weekend or something. But I guess this place likes pictures, so
So this game is by those guys at Petroglyph. They made that Star Wars RTS from a while ago that was supposed to be pretty good. Apparently, a lot of them are guys who worked on the earlier
Command & Conquers, so they get some publicity for that. Universe at War is their second game, and it, too, is an RTS. From what I remember, it seems to be a fairly traditional RTS. It doesn't exactly introduce any new concepts for an RTS. However, what it does have is
ROBOT ALIENS BLOWING EACH OTHER UP ON EARTH AS PUNY HUMANS SHRIEK IN TERROR.
A lot of the maps are based on real locations, like Washington D.C. So when aliens begin attacking Earth in real life, UaW will be dubbed an “alien simulator” which helped train new aliens and turned our kids into aliens. More importantly, of the game's three factions/races, none of them are humans. That's pretty awesome. What's even more awesome is that they all seem pretty interesting in some way. What's also even more awesome is that they're also supposed to be pretty balanced. But who are these aliens? Well let's journey into the mind of best-selling author Stephanie Meyer to find out.
Protip: Stephanie Meyer doesn't actually have anything to do with UaW.
La JerarquÃa
The Hierarchy are your evil monster aliens. They are evil like and look scary, even monster-like. They are cool because their builders are this funny floating Star Wars probe droids are Reaper drones. They float around and convert anything not an alien into resources, I think. So you just send them to a random area and they'll turn all trees and houses and lamp poles and people they com across into resources for you to build stuff. Wait, scratch that. I was wrong, because you don't actually built stuff. You choose a “glyph carver” and tell him you want a building, then he'll go “ogay” and start drawing on the ground with laser crayons. After he decides he is pleased with his drawing, he will step back and a giant building will fall on his drawing, crushing his dreams of becoming an artist and twisting his destiny onto a path rife with blue collars.
Also, they have these giant walkers that are like mobile fortress. They have a bunch of different sections to them, that you can modify, such as each of it's legs and I think four plates on top. You can choose to build armor or laser turrets or radars and stuff. These walkers are also like mobile barracks, as you can manufacture soldiers inside them, who will be teleported onto the battlefield. So they are also like mobile home-bases. They are the race you play in the demo, so the rest of the races won't have as much written about them.
Protip: Their bio says they are the most powerful force in the galaxy, so I guess they automatically win the game.
The Nova Scotians
The Novus are sentient robots from the planet Slightanimeinfluence. They are white, which does not mean they are good. I feel like they are very... neutral. Except they want everyone else dead. They are cool because they are robots. They also can build super light highways that any unit can ride to from any other point on the super light highways. This means they can travel around the map at
light-speed. Also, one of the hero units, named
The Founder, can act as a mobile node to the super light highways. So at any time, any number of your troops can trip the light fantastic to his position instantly. How's
that for a Trojan Horse?
Protip: I'm not actually fact checking any of this, so I could be wrong on all accounts.
The Garam Masala
The Masari are Stargate rejects. I think they rose from under the Great Pyramids, roused from their slumber by the bickering between the Hierarchy and the Novus. That means that yes, they were on Earth all along. They look like humans, and thus look pretty stupid. The wacky thing they have going on is that you can switch the entire civilization's functions by turning their lights on and off. In Light mode, all of the buildings and units will do one thing, apparently more focused on strong attack power. If you switch to Dark mode, all of the building and units will have different functions and abilities they didn't have in Light mode; I guess it is less focused on strong attack power. Aside from that, they have a dinky green color scheme, they love chariots, and I guess they are the “good-er” guys. They are probably trying to save to Earth or some nonsense.
I think they might also have a giant black hole bomb or some nonsense like that.
Protip: They really barely count as aliens. I mean, just look at them. They guys in helmets.
And that's all I know about the game! I remember the demo being not too great; not the game itself, but just what the demo granted the player. It didn't give you a real level or anything, you just commanded a squad of units in a small attack mission. But it at least let me know that I could run it smoothly at some settings and still have it look somewhat pretty.
Also, the game is GAMES FOR WINDOWS and XBOX LIVE COMPATIBLE, meaning you can log into your Xbox Live account to get achievements and play against people who have the Xbox 360 version of the game. Ain't that something?
Oh, so basically I was just wondering if anyone has any real experience with the game and if it was cool or something. It was cheap, so even if it ends up being a big piece of crap (It got decent reviews, though! And patches to fix problems!), I didn't lose too much in the end. And people really play games only to get achievements, right?

This is the first I've seen of the black hole bomb. That looks ridiculously awesome!

Its the Mobile Oppression Palace! Earth is fucked now!
This game did/does look cool. Keep us updated on how fun the game is.
Okay, I'll try to make some time for it.
I think one of the patches is supposed to pull the camera distance back a bit.
The only issues that I have encountered is that the load times before each level are atrocious. Ok it is not c64-tapes slow but it takes around 2 minutes at times. The other is that animations are not as smooth as some other rts-games. It is not horrid by any means but you definitely notice it.
Still I really recommend the game. It is cheap, it has 3 completely unique sides, the research system is pretty awesome. Oh and you can play with war of the worlds style huge mechs, an army designed by apple, and light switch army.
Good catch, I love that episode.
