Its like this my laptop routinely finds 30-40+ tracking cookies every time I do a virus scan (usually 1-2 a week), I'm currently using the latest free version of AVG. My question is what are these things doing to my computer and is there any way I can keep them off?
People are way too paranoid about cookies. Almost all of the time, they're there to make your browsing easier. If you use the iGoogle homepage, for example, it keeps track of your login, so you don't have to log in each time you visit. If you'd prefer not to use them, try turning them off or changing their settings.
In Firefox - Tools --> Options --> Privacy Tab --> Uncheck "Accept Cookies from Sites" or change the option to prompt every time you get one. Then you can see who's setting them, etc.
In IE - Tools --> Internet Options --> Privacy Tab --> Change the slider to a higher (or highest) level, or choose advanced and make the settings changes yourself.
Try browsing with them off for a little while, and you'll probably start to see when they might come in handy. Certain sites (like Bank sites, online retail sites, etc) won't even function properly without them being allowed. You can have exceptions with either browser to allow specific sites, if you wish.

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?
