My computer was working fine this morning when I shut it down to go to work. I come home eight hours later and it won't startup. The fans turn on fine, but the hard drive light isn't on and the usual sounds of the hard drive at work are absent. Any ideas?
The first step is to make sure all connections are properly seated. This means taking out and reseating all connections.
If this does not produce results move on to resetting the CMOS. This is normally achieved by moving a jumper over for a few seconds and moving it back. You're motherboard and google can elaborate.
If this also fails then the most likely candidates for replacement would be the mobo or PSU
I've seen this happen before, where you turn on a PC and the fans come on, but the computer itself doesn't boot up.. as in, nothing comes on but the fans..
In my experience, it's usually been a power supply issue.
The solution has always been to buy a new power supply and replace the broken one.
Obviously you don't want to spend money as your first course of action, so you might want to check for shorts first.
But usually, where a computer works fine, and then the next time you see it, only the fans come on when you turn it on, it's the Power Supply that is problematic, and there's not much you can do to 'fix' a power supply except replace it...
