When it rains, it pours (for nvidia) The plot thickens

So, after the thrashings that ATI/AMD's 4800 series is now handing out to nvidia you'd think it couldn't get worse right?

Wrong, apparently previous generation nvidia mobile gpu chips are defective in some manner not specified. Regardless of what this hardware problem is it's hit nvidias stock price by 24 percent.

The even worse news? I own a Macbook Pro which has has an nvidia gpu from that generation. It hasn't failed, fingers crossed it won't. (had it since around January)

EDIT:

It appears the plot is thickening with HP acknowledging an issue with HP laptops and nvidia chips but nvidia is refusing to acknowledge any issue and pointing any blame towards TSMC. (the people who fab their chips)

The video card industry is up and down, ATI produce something awesome, Nvidia Produce something just as good, ATI then make something sub-par and Nvidia is unleashing brilliance. Now Radeon produce something tremendous and Nvidia are just a little better than before.

One thing I really hate about these tech demos they keep releasing is that they always end up looking better than games that are released, There are still effects like flowing hair and proper fur that all these tech demos show, but no games use.

The Radeon Video was impressive, but the final result won't be nearly as good or will come half way there in about 4 years time.

Have they made any that look decent yet? It's been a few years, but the last hair demo I saw from nVidia looked pretty horrid (as in, I'll take pre-modelled hair with textures, kthxbye).
I also imagine long hair would look pretty ridiculous in an action game. Hair EVERYWHERE.

Remember the good old days when ATi would occasionally (re: once a month for a five or six month period) release drivers that would cause the monitor blow out or your PSU short for some people?

    Simpler times, indeed.

The 6.x catalyst drivers used to cause a weird subtle flicker on my Viewsonic VX924, freaked me out somewhat as I originally thought my graphics card was dying or something. This was on my X1900XTX.

ATI used to write incredibly bad drivers, in some ways they still do. The catalyst control centre has always been an atrocity of the grandest scale in memory waste and that damn annoying as hell CCC they add to the right click context menu that I have to remove from the registry every single damn time I update my drivers. If I don't I frequently find myself accidentally launching CCC because ATI in their stupidity added it to the worst possible place to add it to in the context menu.

Well, most developers tend to just put down a shape of polygons, with a texture on it, a hand full of 2d sprites on masse on top of each other (see Unreal Tournament 3), but I saw a tech demo some time ago that showed every individual strand of hair, not jsut a hand full of waving sprites, even the character that was shown with short hair looked great. This was shown just after Pixel Shader 2.0 came out. No one has used it yet.

the CCC is shit, but their actual drivers have gotten a lot better. When they coudlnt' compete with nVidia at all they really worked on optimizing their drivers as much as they could to squeeze every last polygon out of the cards. Now that they have cards to compete, the drivers are pretty good.

IMO, nVidia's drivers have been going downhill. I've been using nVivia drivers that are 3 versions old for my 7800GT because the last 2 times I tried to update the drivers it did weird things. But, I wont' have to deal with it for much longer as I have a 4870 that should be at my door monday.

Got you beat, my 4870 arrived an hour ago. I used to use ATI tray tools and never bothered installing CCC but ATT caused issues with the newer drivers so I stopped using it, which annoyed me. ATI should just drop CCC and package ATT with it instead. Call it say "advanced users driver" or something.

Frankly, I think ATI should just hire the guy who makes it and buy ATT outright.

Thats a nice article, but the fight for DX10.1 isn't really that big a deal right now as none of the games support it. The switch to GDDR5 memory though for nvidia would be nice, as ATI has already jumped to that boat.

Nvidia is very quickly surpassing ATI in the "shit drivers" department. The new control center is bad enough- especially the way options disappear with every driver release- but their latest drivers actually deliver a 10% or so FPS decrease. Oops.

Yeah I'm using an 8800 GTS mobile (gateway fx series). the gpu craps out in vista, after trying multiple drivers. In vista, which is what it comes loaded with, it works fine. I keep the gpu driver fairly up to date. Under full load it gets hot at the exhaust fan, but nothing to be alarmed at. My friend has a 7800 in his 18 month old dell laptop, and has had to RMA it twice, with dell deciding to just to completely replace it after the last time. So maybe it's the 7x series that are affected. Who knows.

HP actually has a "soft recall" out on a lot of their notebooks.

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c01087277&dlc=en
HP has identified a hardware issue with certain HP Pavilion dv2000/dv6000/dv9000 and Compaq Presario V3000/V6000 series notebook PCs

Yeah, "certain" ones ... like, say, half your entire consumer lineup?

The greatest part is that I had a motherboard fail in a V3000 around a year ago, and it was replaced - and I'm getting this problem now. And my notebook's P/N isn't in the listing - it just has the defective run of motherboard. So I get to fight tooth and nail with HP to get them to replace it again, hopefully with a working one this time.

This situation feels very similar to what happened when nVidia usurped the throne of 3Dfx almost ten years ago.

Back then, it was 3Dfx who felt like the unbeatable champion. The Voodoo 1 and 2 were the only cards of their class in their generation, and they were so confident that they bought out a board manufacturing company so that they could produce their own boards (instead of handing their chips out to 3rd parties who then made the boards... and a share of the profit along with it).

The problem was, nVidia had a better product, 3Dfx had stretched itself too thin in its new industries: and what 3Dfx didn't know was that, in the video card industry, there is no such thing as consumer loyalty.

Within months of the release of the Voodoo 3, the darling of the industry lost its top spot. The stock price plummeted, and in their haste they released the Voodoo 4 and 5, which were awkward and sealed the fate of the company.

it feels to me like nVidia is making the same mistakes.

    this happens all the time
nvidia was king until the 4x00 series
the 5x00 series sucked massive amounts of ass, getting kicked in the ass by ati's 9x00 series SO hard
then the 6x00 series came and kicked ati's ass
nvidia's great for a few gens, then ati gets its shit together again and the cycle starts again

that's a prime example on why competition is awesome for the customer, really

those faulty laptop parts suck though, just got a dell xps with an nvidia 8600mGT like a week ago D:

It's even better for nvidia this time, their current gpu line doesn't suck

I looked at my products page and I didn't see "eligible for trade up" or anything anywhere.

This is so, fucked. I buy something and then everyone decides to go to the next generation. I can't even play Crysis on this card anyway because the temperature goes to like 90 degrees celsius, and the price actually dropped from 500 to like 370 on NewEgg like a week after I bought it. I can't return it for a refund and I don't know what the fuck I'm gonna do.

The situation is driving me crazy. I'm so pissed I'm breaking shit around my house.

Fucking piece of shit. Worst times to buy a video card.

What's the quickest and best way for me to liquidate a 9800 GTX so I can buy a new GTX 280 at this lower price?

If it's EVGA use the step up program, I've used it before it's great

Its from BFG, which has a 100 day trade up program too but I suspect I can't actually trade up because I have a watercooled card. Even though I did register within 30 days of purchase, and bought it from newegg. Fucking sons of bitches.

I don't think you would have a problem, I can't see why that card wouldn't qualify for the trade up...does it say it doesn't anywhere?

I looked at my products page and I didn't see "eligible for trade up" or anything anywhere.

This is so, fucked. I buy something and then everyone decides to go to the next generation. The temperature shouldn't go to 90 degrees. That would melt the friggen card or at least cause damage. Thats pretty gay, I would phone them up and cause a ruckus.

It can go to 90 degrees. And then the drivers shut the card off before it melts. I suspect its because my cooling isn't adequate, not because of the card. Shit. It idles at 58.

Wow I'm really surpised they would allow the card that is water cooled get to 90 degrees. Is there a good air flow through the case, maybe the hot air just isn't being moved out?
