The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
So after finally managing to get all of the Half-Life 2 achievements after sending that grinning, bearded gnome bastard into orbit, I decided to finish up Portal as well. Problem is, I have no idea how to throw those damnable cubes around. What am I doing wrong? When I attempt this, it pretty much falls immediately down with barely any discernible change in its trajectory.

The Portal gun isn't the gravity gun; you can't launch objects directly. Typically, if you need to throw an object, you have to drop it from a significant height and use portals to redirect the momentum in the desired direction.
You just pick it up and hit primary fire, so left click if you're on PC. Alt fire just drops it. Most of the time that guy runs and jumps when he throws stuff to make it go further.

Are you talking about the gravity gun? 'Cause I need to know about the portal gun.
My apologies...that seems to be working better. I would have sworn I tried that.

Using the trigger is working better than letting it go with what small amount of momentum I'm able to manage but it doesn't seem anywhere near as effortless as it does in the clip. It doesn't look like he's jumping or doing anything different from me but whenever I try it, it almost makes it before falling down to the floor. It just seems like I'm missing something considering how easy it looks in the clip.

In the clip, he's moving foward, jumping, and throwing. He's probably also right on the edge of the platform before he throws. He's making this look way easier than it really is...just keep trying and you'll get it.

Or just carry the cube down and put it on the button. Your not going to be able to throw items very far at all.

It's a good skill to learn though for when you do the advanced maps.

I know the difference between the gravity gun and the portal gun.
Are you talking about the gravity gun? 'Cause I need to know about the portal gun.

You need to be thinking with portals.
Practice and eat more cake.
