HEARTLESS thieves have stolen the only enjoyment disabled teenager Zak Touilii has in his life - his PlayStation.
Born with the life-threatening illness duchenne muscular dystrophy, Zak, 14, has been confined to a wheelchair most of his life. His only enjoyment has been playing videogames with his mates, until thieves broke into his Wollongong home last week.
"Why did they have to do that?" he told The Daily Telegraph yesterday.
The new PlayStation 3 and games were given to him by the Make a Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to terminally ill children.
Yesterday, the foundation condemned the actions of the thieves, who also took jewellery and appliances.
Zak's mother Joanne Smith said she had never seen her son so devastated.
"He came flying out the front door and was just hysterical saying, 'Mum, they took my PlayStation'," she said.
"I wish those rotten bastards could have seen my son's face."
Zak's condition is an aggressive form of muscular dystrophy characterised by rapid degeneration of the muscles, eventually leading to paralysis and death.
The theft was another blow in a bad week for Zak. He was due to meet his favourite rugby league team, Melbourne Storm, at Parramatta Stadium on Sunday but instead had to stay at home because of a broken wheelchair.
"I have to wrestle him in the middle of the night to get his Melbourne jumper off him to wash it," Ms Smith said. "He loves the Storm."
Zak recently spoke to Storm halfback Cooper Cronk, who invited him to be a guest at the game.
"We will have to make it another time. It hasn't been a good week," she said.
A spokeswoman for the Make a Wish Foundation said: "Make A Wish exists purely to bring a bit of magic to children who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness.
"We were very happy to be able to grant Zak his wish recently and are horrified that anyone would be so cruel as to steal from a young man who has already had to endure so much."

Maybe the kid crippled himself to gain psychic powers, just like what Stephen Hawking did.
The mojo does not want this being to have any sort of happiness, ever
"However, those things are expensive as fuck so we aren't gonna get him another. No point dropping almost 2 grand on a dying kid"
Yes it is.
This news is sad though. I'm sure the thieves didn't target the house because of his disability. Still majorly fucking wrong.
Hot irons to the testicles.
