Holy crap of all the unlikely series to get revived. After Technosoft started only doing Pachinko stuff I was sure we would never get another Thunder Force. I'm going to have to whip out the Genesis and play Thunderforce III now.
I only discovered Thunder Force rather recently when I decided to create my official "Genesis games to collect" list. I went through Wikipedia's list of every game for the system and discovered the Thunder Force games in the process.

Me SHMUPS
Check out MUSHA, which is, IIRC, in the Aleste series.
Ugh, is it REALLY that difficult to bring it to the states? I'm 99% sure that most hardcore shmup fans wouldn't give a flying fuck about the dialogue being in Japanese, we just want to SHOOT SHIT!
What is the difference between Thunder Force and other shmups?
Well, TF1 sucks. TF2 is kinda suck. TF3 and TF4 on the Genesis were about six kinds of awesome. Super super fast. Good weapon system. Great music. Loved the level designs. Horizontal scrolling but you could move vertically on some levels, which would change how a few levels played.
Saturn TFV was a very beautiful game, had an improved weapons system, but was slightly on the easy side. Still had great music, though. Was downgraded when ported to the PSX.
Weapon system isn't like Gradius where you're stuck with just one weapon all the time. You do get options and the like, but you can cycle through weapons.

MUSHA is tight. One of the best Genesis games. I made it all the way to the final level but never beat it. Space Megaforce (Super Aleste) is also dope. Still looking for a copy of that game to this day.
Thunder Force is a fairly obscure shmup. Ikaruga and Gradius aren't, their handling and localization was kind of expected. Fans on both sides of the pond, critical acclaim, had a large userbase to be exposed to.
The ThunderForce series... not so much. Someone at SEGA had to be a big enough fan to license the game and want to create another in the series. That could be a very good sign.
EDIT
Also, a good friend of mine just reminded me that SEGA and Tecnosoft have worked very closely in the past. There's a very solid chance that this is Tecnosoft working on this.
EDIT II
Game's director has ties to Treasure. SEGA has no dedicated shooter team. It's total fantasy, but possible Treasure and Tecnosoft sharing duties?

I'm actually considering getting that really weird one just released for the Wii.

This is the year of revisiting old titles.
I never asked for this!
