Well I just went down to alltel to look at getting an HTC touch and I found out that I could pay another 10 bucks on top of the unlimited data service that would allow me to tether my phone to my desktop or laptop. I asked the person working there if it was 100% unlimited and if I started downloading gigs a day if I would get kicked off and she said no. I didn't see anything in the contract saying it was not really unlimited. My question is would this cell phone modem be good enough to replace my cable modem for games like World of Warcraft and Counter strike.
I was looking at the HTC touch and it is EVDO Rev1 from my understanding. Here is coverage area for me and speeds..
With Verizon if you download more than 10MB an hour or over 5GB a month they will cut off your data plan and levy a massive surcharge.

For the most part, assuming your EVDO coverage is good, it's actually useable as a regular broadband connection, though the uploads are kinda slow. If you're in RevA territory, you'll pull several Mbit down, and about 300Kbit up, rev0 areas will have significantly slower upload, around 16Kbit. The real thing to watch for is your useage, pretty much every carrier has a soft-cap around the 5Gb/mo mark.
tl;dr : its very useable as a primary broadband connection, but watch out for useage limits.

This isn't necessarily true. I've used my HTC PPC6800 (Sprint) as a modem on my laptop several times. I paid for unlimited service, and I've yet to receive any notice about being cut off or extra fees. I use the thing pretty much exclusively at work daily with no concerns.
It may vary from provider to provider. Just make sure you can get a good look at the contract on their policies.
Indeed, I have a Sony Ericsson K750i and using bluetooth I can connect my laptop (Macbook Pro) to the internet. Downside is because it goes through Oranges network it is 1. dog slow 2. horribly limited so it's only really useful for going on the internet to browse the web. (plus the internet data charges are ridiculous)
I'm on a pay as you go service on Orange in the UK btw.

I've got a spare copy of Portal, if anyone wants it message me.
If you're gaming, do not use this as a primary connection. Backup, sure, but not for GAMING. If there is no limit, have her show you the part in the contract that says so - if it does not say so, have her write it on there.

Reading the OP it'll only be half-useful.
The 300 ping will make it a fine experience in WoW, but you will not be playing CS on that.

Looking for a DX:HR OnLive code for my kid brother.
Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.

Alltel is the only company with no limit. Sprint is doing away with unlimited the 28th of this month. Altell is due to get rid of unlimited too because of it being owned by Verizon now but if I sign up soon they can't change the contract on me without giving me the option to break the contract.
I went through my Razor V3C for a few months when it was all I had. Don't buy the "data kit" from the Alltel store though. Unless like like anal blood. It's like 70 dollars or some shit. Instead, get it from oemuniverse.com (I think it's .com) for like 4 dollars. Same software, same cable, four dollars.
My experience with it was kind of poor, but if it's all you have, it's great. You will have to prebuffer youtube videos though. And gaming is out of the question.
I've used phone-as-modem over Sprint's EV-DO as my primary connection for a couple weeks at a time using the same phone, the Touch. You can MMO with it easily. Web-browsing is a touch slower than cable. You can't really play FPSs online with it.
Also, since you have a windows mobile smartphone, you can either pay Alltel 10 bucks extra a month for the exact same data, or you can pay 20 bucks once.
USBmodem just lets your computer access your phone's data service through a virtual pocket IE client. Thus unless you do something insane like torrent 6 gigs, your phone looks like it's accessing that data on its own. And contrary to the name, it works over both a USB connection and Bluetooth.
I can't speak for Alltel, but with Sprint I have been told by several employees that they pretty much don't care unless you're using insane amounts of data.
Edit: If you have any questions about the Touch or Phone-as-modem or anything, feel free to PM me.
Yeah I am aware that you don't need to pay to tether because they can't tell tether from untether; however, when I start downloading shit all the time they will notice. And thanks for the link because there was no way in hell I was going to pay 50 bucks for their fucking cable. Also, you can tether it to the computer via blue tooth correct? Is it as fast as usb?
One more question. I really want the HTC touch even if I can't keep the data plan but they said they MUST be sold with a data plan. My friend said I could get the HTC touch and then cancel the data plan after a month.
I used Sprint EVDO for my 360 connected through my laptop, and I have to say I never really had a problem gaming. I played a lot of Halo 3 and CoD4 and didn't notice any problems.

Would it bother you if that was the only connection you had?
