Urban Dead: Monroeville (UD: hardcore mode)

I've recently been really interested in zombie movies so I've also been looking for zombie games to play (Zombie Master, Zombie Panic, etc.)

Decided to check out what was going on with Urban Dead and noticed that they have a new map called Monroeville which is based on Diary of the Dead. Seems like the main difference is that this is essentially a hardcore version of UD. i.e. no Necrotech, so if you die, you stay a zombie, and if you're headshot as a zombie, you're gone. i.e., more like a classic zombie movie and you actually care more about staying alive.

There's a signup phase right now that'll probably only last a few more days before they close the doors again. Zombies cannot be headshot during the signup phase from what I understand.

I've got two characters there Dracilia and Caldonia. Caldonia's in a nice safehouse in Newtown. Dracilia just ran from her safehouse that was overrun this morning and is now sleeping all alone in a ruined building with the doors wide open hoping no zombie will bother checking something with no signs of human life.

Seems most people are playing Nexus War nowadays, but if people wanna do a PA group for Monroeville that might be fun too.

Also, any suggestions for any other good free zombie game/mods would be much appreciated (still waiting primarily for Left 4 Dead)

Is it going to put me at a huge disadvantage to start as a firefighter? Killing zombies with an axe is too juicy to pass up.

Firefighter is one of the best starter classes because of the free axe/melee skill.

Scout the area a bit. Try to find a Very Strongly Barricaded building to hide in before you run out of AP. You need to loot police stations for guns/ammo, and you can get first aid kits from hospitals. Stay near the home base you find until you get some experience, and don't ever underestimate zombies - a high level one can kill two people with a full day's worth of AP.Given that this is the case, avoid large groups of zombies whenever possible. Take your shots/do your damage/get your experience and get to a safe spot. Never end your turn in the street.

Pick up Free Running as soon as possible - it lets you travel between buildings without having to go onto the street. You can't directly enter a building that is more than Very Strongly barricaded, but you can get into them with Free Running by entering an adjacent building and moving to it from inside. It can save you in a pinch because zombies always have to break down the barricades before entry.

At the moment, I don't think you can change your password.

If you need guns ammo, go to a police station. If you need a Fire Axe (best melee weapon, but odds are you already started with it if you go melee), go to a Fire Station. If you have no combat skill, find a knife (20% base hit rate). But you're still probably gonna die if you stay and fight. Best way to gain experience without too much risk is to raid a hospital for lots of first aid kits and then go find a nice crowded safehouse and try to heal people (5xp per).

But definitely get free running fast or you'll be locked out of the best safehouses. Scouts start with free running.

Yeah, I first played when Zombies were getting the short end of the stick. Now, I have way more fun as my zombie character. Playing as a human means you spend half your time scrounging for stuff, and you have to be so much more careful about how you play.
The worst penalty for making a mistake as a zombie is a measly 6AP once you have Ankle Grab.

Well, that area seems relatively safe from what I know (It's the Southwest area). Monroeville itself (big chunk of NE area) seems rather dangerous. Ruined buildings everywhere, swarms of zombies, etc. I think it's all farmland in between the two.

wow, I was playing this game a few years ago during the big assault on the mall in the north west. Tasty9 was a zombie killing machine maxxed out human. may have to pick this game back up if my work filter doesn't block it out.

My characters are in Monroeville. It's more interesting there since if you die, you stay dead. I'm also playing my old character in Malton though.

Just reached level 2 with both Dracilia and Caldonia yesterday. Their survival chances went up by about 70%.

I remember joining a group in Monroeville with a few other people- about 10 of us decided to defend one of the farms on the outskirts of the city. We actually stayed alive until Headshot became a permanent thing, after which the city pretty much became zombie-free. I didn't bother to log in for a few weeks, and came back to find the whole place overrun. Died in the second outbreak

Still, /visits character creation. Fun game.

I'm in as Whitezinfandel in Monroeville. Unfortunately I came in as a doctor and am in an extremely barricaded building, so pretty much my only xp source is punching a dude once and then healing him (I'm in a hospital, got plenty of FAKs). Can't wait to get free running, a fire axe, and some skill with it.

Then I read the front page.

And despite what you may have been told on the emergency broadcasts and television news, removing the head or destroying the brain no longer appears to have any effect on the dead - headshot zombies can stand up, even those who were taken down during or before the quarantine.

So, if you get killed as a human, you're fucked. If you get killed as a zombie, you stand up. Which means that within a week, everyone is going to be a fucking zombie again anyway.

Hurrrr. Seriously, I get the fact that trying to play as a survivor is trenchcoaty or beardo or whatever the kids are calling it these days, but all the zombies ever do is gallivant around shouting "GRAB MAH MANBAGS, HARMAN!", which has no appeal to me at all.

We're pretty sure this only lasts until the signups end. The problem was that during the quarantine, the zombies pretty much got exterminated via headshots.
