I don't know if this is the appropriate place for this, if not, I apologize.
Also, is posting a full-face picture kosher?
I really want to try something more stylish than normal and don't know where to start and was looking for some first opinions. I am a 21 year old, 6'6", fairly skinny guy with long hair and I'm looking for a medium-length (8"-12") hairstyle or cut that isn't just parted down the middle and hanging of the sides.
you and I are apparently the same person. Though, the best thing to do with hair like that is to get out of the shower and just shake off like a wet dog. Gives it a good messy, yet still clean, look to it.
I have a 1.5 on the sides and in the back and I leave the hair on top about 3"-4" and spike it. Awesome as hell and takes about 15 seconds to pull it off. I suggest it to anyone (especially since I can pull it off with a head like a basketball).
I have a friend who is 6'4" stringy skinny guy with chin length hair, and it looks goofy as shit. Because he's so skinny the longer hair keeps the stringy lines going and makes him looks like a pole. When it's actually cut shorter and styled, it breaks up the lines a bit. You say you're fairly skinny, so there's a good chance you're not the bean pole he is.
I'd go to a salon and talk to a stylist. As a gal, I've never been to a barber so I don't know how often they deal with longer hair on a client.
Yeah, I had long hair (to shoulders) starting in 11th grade and going until my 22nd birthday, or shortly before I graduated college. I kept it back in a ponytail almost the entire time, and looking back at those pictures, it's just embarrassing.
What's worse is that I got it cut to a mid-length, and it looked AWESOME for about a month. Then it grew out, and I could never get that first haircut replicated anywhere. It looked crappy for about 2 years after that.
Recently I've been going shorter and shorter. Not a buzz by any means, but short enough that if I stick my head out the window of a moving car, the wind doesn't really mess it up.
I'm a fan. Hairstyles for men are hard, and unless you have a LOT of time to put into it, I'm convinced that it's impossible to do. Male facial structure is too large to complement the longer hair. Long hair is sort of the rockstar/hollywood look for dudes, but that's also the segment of the population with a) the most time available to look awesome, and pay people to help them look good, and b) the most face time in public.
I seriously believe that if I had shorter hair, even a "boring" style, in college, I would've had an entirely different college experience. Based solely on a stupid hair choice.
To elaborate on my first post, a graphical tour of men with short hair. I've heard that women like these men. Now, I can't guarantee that's it's the hair, but with as a guy with short (and in some places non-existent) hair, I like to think so
A lot depends on how thick and straight your hair is. I have very straight until it gets to a certain length when it starts to swish (for lack of a better word) and I have a lot of it. It means that I can keep my hair quite long (approaching shoulder length) but have it layered and messy so it stays interesting. If your hair isn't that thick and just lies straight and long it's harder to work with. A good idea is to look up photos of people with longish hair (British Indie bands is a good place to start) and then talk to a stylist about it.
My favorite hairstyle of all time was a few years after I cut off my long hair. It was down to my mid-back in high school, when I cut off the ponytail and with a medium length haircut. Blah blah, styling products, blah blah, 20 minutes a day. In college, I started to care less about being fashionable. I also stopped going to the barber. I got a pretty short, spikey haircut before I went off to college. I did the styling product thing for a while, but then just started to blowdry my hair while hanging my head upside down. This resulted in a poofy, straight-hair 'fro. it was awesome. I wore it for about 4 years. I miss that hairstyle. My hair was anywahere from 2-3 inches to up to 6 inches during this phase.
I have since gone to a uni-length shaved cut. My clipper is an adjustable model I bought in Japan, so i can only tell you that my hair is a uniform 6mm all around. Second favorite hair style ever.

But I think that some of the hairstyles Here are what the OP wanted.
