I just discovered a little game called
Iffermoon, a free RPG made by Scottgames. You might have played his previous games,
The Desolate Room and
The Legacy of Flan (scroll down the page a bit). If you have, chances are you know what to expect from his latest game: something bizarre but oddly charming and hard to put down.
So what is it?
Iffermoon is a sidescrolling RPG about a world ravaged by Cosmose, a machine awoken when the Iffermoon, an artifact that protected life, crashed. You play Silence, a creature found during the aftermath of the fight with Cosmose. You have just left the Starnest, your home of eight years. Finally free to see the world, you feel an odd shadow looming over you.
Iffermoon, as mentioned before, is completely free. The graphics are good (remind me of Creatures), the music is catchy and the creator uses donations to help those in need (currently he wants to purchase a set of playground equipment for a playground in Afghanistan). It's a surprisingly fun little game that's quite unique in presentation.
What makes it special?
You can have a number of characters in your party, but must complete tasks to earn their favor before you can use them. Characters can specialize in a number of abilities, such as the alteration of time or using the elements to damage enemies. Combat is realtime, characters automatically use a physical attack but when they're special meter is high enough they can use spells and special attacks. The more of the special bar you fill up, the stronger the abilities you can use. It takes a little bit of getting used to, and feels like a mix of FFVII and Grandia.
But really, you have nothing to lose because it's a free game. I was very surprised by the quality, and it wouldn't seem out of place as a commercial game on the DS. So give it a try.

It does look interesting though, I'm gonna try out his previous games.
Hmm...yeah, I guess so. I downloaded it like last week and forgot. Sorry folks.
EDIT: Tigsource has it hosted, use the link on the bottom
But...
Why did I read this as "Yiffermoon" first?
Also, come to new vent IP. Come. Let us discuss Striking Magical Females.
Looks like it'll be back up for free in September. He's worried about people using up his bandwidth so he had to take the public link down. Suppose I'll try out the other two until then.
