I feel like I've been on this website for days.

Anyways, just a good hour ago I reinstalled Windows onto my computer deleting old partitions and such because I felt like I needed a clean start. I figured along with my room and my life I could clean up my computer. Well, things didn't work out that way.

Everything reinstalled just nicely, but what I noticed was that the screen resolution was way low (480x640?). At that moment I didn't mind because I was just going to reinstall my Microsoft Office and go on the internet. I tried installing Microsoft Office but it wouldn't say there was a problem with the MIOADICT thing. Ok, well I'll just try later. I tried installing my Verizon internet but it wouldn't reinstall because my screen resolution wasn't 800x600. Ok, so let's try to change the resolution. Oh wait, I can't because it won't let me. Following the directions that control panel gave me, it still wouldn't let me change it because the hardware tells it not to. I tried changing monitors thinking that'd help (I have no idea if it would or not) but it didn't.

So I figured let's just restart the computer. Now it restarts but all I get is a blank page! The Windows logo appears like its about to start, but then nothing happens after that.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, and it's driving me up the wall. I just wanted to do some spring (summer) cleaning of things and now I'm just getting a gigantic pain in the ass. What's going on?

EDIT: Also while reinstalling Windows XP it said that it couldn't install the driver.cab and at the time I didn't think much of it. I think I can download it from Microsoft's website and put it on a USB and then everything be fine, right?

Sounds like your missing the graphics drivers. Although being limited to 640x480 is a bit unusual as it'll usually install some generic ones that do a little better.

As for the blankness, you should probably try safe mode. Failing that another reformat reinstall. And then the very first thing you should do is:

    Install Motherboard Drivers
    Install Video Drivers
    Install Audio Drivers
Install any other device drivers (e.g. network cards etc)
    restart
    Then run Windows Update
    restart
Then you can start installing programs

Exactly how do I install the drivers? I'm sorry I'm new at this, but I don't have a disk laying around with Drivers on them. The disk I used to re-install XP says on the CD its not used to reinstall programs or drivers. I'm doing a repair right now to see if that works (I tried safe mode but it came up with a list of things and then shut down on me).

You need to find out what graphics card you have (probably Nvidia, ATI, or Intel) and go to the respective website of that company to download the drivers.

If this reinstall thing works, can I then use this computer (my dad's) to download the drivers on to a CD and then put it in my computer and install?

And, oh god I can't believe I'm going to ask this, but how do I found out what my graphic card is?

    (1) Right-click on "My Computer"
    (2) Select "Properties"
    (3) Select the "Hardware" tab
    (4) Click "Device Manager"
    (5) Click the plus sign next to "Display Adapters"

    And there you go

Thank you! I'm trying to get more into computers and video games. I like them on the surface but I'd like to get all up in it one day. I'm still starting out (as you can tell) so thank you for the boost! :D Also, is the Intel (which is what it is) going to carry the motherboard drivers and audio/video drivers? And can I install from a disc? I think I'll try USB though...to see.

    Yes you can.

Really first step is to find out what PC you have. If it's a prebought one then most likely the manufacturer will have a website where you can enter the model no and get it to spit out all the drivers you can. And installing drivers is pretty much just like installing any other software.

Yeah its a Dell computer. I will most definitely check that out as well, thanks!

Another question, I have Windows Office brought from a store and my sis said I can't reinstall it because it only has three installs. This isn't true, right?

EDIT: Another question, If the CD doesn't work again, can I go to Microsoft's website and update the office programs to 2007? Like I had the 07 versions of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and one note, but everyone else in the house has 07 for outlook. So that made me wonder if it was possible.

If you've bought office from a store and it's the retail version she might be confusing it for the terms of licensing. I think most of the time you buy a 3 user license which means you're able to have 3 copies of it installed simultaniously on different computers. The worst that'll probably happen is you might need to phone up someone in india and just say you formated your computer and can you please have another activation, but seeing as it's the same hardware it should be fine.

Your "another question" is a bit confusing. There is a trial version of office you can download and I think you can just put in a valid serial to activate it, although I wouldn't swear to that. http://us1.trymicrosoftoffice.com/default.aspx

As for outlook, they might just have Outlook Express which is the free version of it.

How old is this machine? What you've been describing could be hardware failure, especially considering that it's a fresh OS install.
