All hail the king of the keyboards

So I forgot I pre-ordered this a long time ago, so imagine my surprise when I discovered it was finally here.

daskeyboardos3.png

The daskeyboard MkIII, son of dasKeyboard MkII. Its the newest revision.

This is pretty much the best keyboard I've ever owned. Notice, that unlike today's crappy rubber dome keyboard switches, the daskeyboard uses gold plated mechanical switches, which gives some of the best tactile feedback I've ever seen in a keyboard. Each key is independently weighted to require different pressures for different fingers. The keyboard itself is slick and black and when turned off you wouldn't even know it had LEDs. And obviously, the blank keys will make you stand out as one of the elites. If I had to give some negatives I would probably say that the spacebar is a bit too sharp and they should take off some weight from the backspace key but in time I'll get used to that shit anyway. And no, you can't really just "make your own" with a crappy keyboard and some paint or whatever. Not even close. This is a quality build.

And the sound, jesus christ its relaxing as hell. The keys click in an amazing rhythm that makes typing a dream, typing this whole post was sooo relaxing, it makes me want to type soo much more. I have felt a lot more productive today using this thing. Fucking incredible. You can probably find videos on youtube of people typing on this, thats what I did, but its just NOT the same as hearing it in person.

Unfortunately my gf thinks its too loud so now I have to replace it and probably only use the keyboard at work. Does anyone know of any other keyboards that are pretty much similar to what I've described in every way except they are silent or at least quieter? I really don't want to go back to my old keyboard it feels like crap now. What do you guys use?

I'm using that - it's not very fancy at all but has a nice enough curve to it, I've never really cared much about what keyboard I use.

So is that keyboard supposed to make you better at games or something? How much of a markup was it for posessing such amazing powers?

EDIT: I mean, my main criteria for a keyboard is twofold:

    1. It's not a laptop keyboard, right? I hate that shit.
    2. Are the buttons 'sticky'? No? Sounds like something I could use.

No it just gives you 20 pretentious nerd points.

That said, it is a high quality keyboard and good tactile feel and response, from those I've talked to that own one.

What'd you map all the blank function keys to? There's the convenient F5 and F6 for frequent use and then there's like 7 more for anything else.

I work at a place that has a bunchload of iMacs that I service all the time with those aluminum keyboards. I. Hate. Them. So. MUCH.

BTW, it's Model M or nothing. Your keyboards are all emasculate husks of cardboard compared to it. I'm just saying. Your penis grows three inches, when you use it, too.

(Actually, I have a Das Keyboard on order, too. I'm still questioning to myself the wisdom of chucking that much down for a goddamned keyboard. It better rock my goddamn face off.)

Yeah, sorry, but pretty looking mac keyboards that suck still suck however pretty they might be. I'll give a lot of kudos to apple, but not for how they make keyboards or mice since the iMac era. Haven't you people USED the old ADB keyboard? Some of the best ever designed. To hear people talking up the garbage they make by comparison... *mutters*

I never buy a keyboard I can't test first in a store, been stuck way too many times with keyboards that 'miss' keys when you're simultaneously pressing only three or four other keys at once, and if you type fast enough that's just not acceptable. If I can type full blast on a keyboard then it'll be adequate for gaming, whatever it costs.

I have a laptop, so when I do use a keyboard, it's usually this thing:

    chinavasion-LK-7830-4-sd.JPG
Behold the virtually indestructible keyboard! It rolls up! It's also really quiet, which is nice for typing while people sleep. It does take a bit of getting used to though, and it's way too long. Note the box at the end where I like to put my mouse.

Actually, who am I kidding? It's usable, but it's really not too great. I prefer typing with something that doesn't cramp my hands up from lack of feedback.

Oh, oh! Notice those three little nubs above the numeric keypad? The places you'd expect the little LEDs? Yeah. They don't actually have anything in them. The indicator lights are in the annoying box.

If you pre-ordered it it would have been 30 dollars less.

But I think its worth it even at the real price. Typing is awesome on this thing, my hands just never get tired.

less is more when it comes to the hotkeys. honestly, how many people used 54 macros? the smaller LCD does kinda suck, and they clearly could have made it bigger, they just chose not to, but overall, I think it's a better product

head to your local Bestbuy/whatever and look at the keyboards they have on display. just go play with them, feel out one you like, and go pick that up. That's always what I recommend for people looking for keyboards. Just make sure you wash your hands after, as think of how many people have touched those keyboards :P

It has not left me wanting. The LEDs are kind of useful at night, but you get over the "cool look" effect after about five minutes of using it. My favorite part is the small volume buttons above the keypad, which happen to work both with XP and OS X.

god I wish someone would make a keyboard with an analog volume slider. Without software being involved. Or maybe just a volume wheel. Volume buttons are a big step up from nothing at all, but a slider would be a lot more intuitive to feel out.

The Logitech Elite had a volume dial and it worked perfectly. But sadly they murdered it, along with all their other decent keyboards, to make way for the laggy spongy-keyed Bluetooth keyboards of the future.

    :)

I did this but was saddened to see that every keyboard ever now comes with a mouse and is wireless. Meanwhile, the only wired keyboard they had that didnt have a mouse was a 80$ Razor one. Way to much money. I remeber seeing a slim/sleak logitec two years ago that was 20$. I wish I would have picked it up, I cant find it anywhere.

Really the best thing about those ancient keyboards is no windows key. I'd like to have the option to still use one, but all my computers have gone USB only for interface.

That Microsoft Digital Media Pro from first page is nice, though. It's got decent clack and responsiveness, and the oversized spacebar ain't bad. Most of the media buttons are pretty dumb, but the volume/music controls are well placed and work the way you'd expect.
