Help me get my brother some good (retard proof) maintence programs

Okay guys so here is the deal, my brother is basicly as informed about computers as say your great grandfather would be when he was 20. He is fantastic at killing them and tends to blame the effects of malware ect on age. So I see him waste a few 1000$ a year on a new computer b/c he kills them.

The question is: What programs could I get him so that they would keep all the crap off his computer without him having to use them. Cost / Subscription fee is not a huge deal, but lets shy away from 300$ programs if we can.

Thank you in advance, I want to get as much info as I can before I give him a reccomendation.

Alright, if you're talking about actual malware and other malicious software there are a few free options.

First look at Comodo. Their Firewall is the best and it's free. Also get their anti-malware program BOClean. It's really good at getting malware and other malicious programs. If you really want to you can also get their Memory firewall. It protects the memory space against script attacks and other types of assault that require memory. All of these programs are free to use.

That just leaves anti-virus, I would recommend NOD32 anti-virus by Eset. Get the Anti-virus not Smart security package.

I guess I was slightly Innacurate. I need a little bit of everything. anti spywares ect. somthing that will run a defrag program. and all those other things we are supposed to do to our ocmputer (outside of cleaning it, he will ahve to do that)

Just use the windows scheduling tool to run defrag, etc. I mean, that'll work, yes?

Beat it into his head that you know what you're talking about and he doesn't. Then put Comodo/Sygate Personal Firewall, AVG AV, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D and CCleaner on his comp and set them to scan automatically, if they can.

um... how does spyware cause 1000 dollars a year in damage?

cant you just reformat the harddrive and reinstall windows spyware free?

if that doesnt work, you can buy a new HD for less than 100 bucks.

is he hitting the computer with a bat when it gets too much spyware?

no he replaces the whole system each year or so.. monitor everything. And I live to far away to do all the stuff he needs constantly.

It is not free, but Windows Live One care is retard proof and it is all-in-one. It is not a resource and traffic Nazi like Norton. If you want you can try out the free scan online. Yes it does work and yes it is legit. F*#k Norton. F*#k it in it's bloated ass.

If you go the free route:
On my aunts computer I have installed Firefox 3, loaded it with all the plugins you would need, changed the icon and told her it was the new IE. I installed AVG Free 8.0 and set it to scan in the early morning. I installed Spy Bot S&D and set it to scan earlier. As for defrag you need to acquire Disk Keeper. Damn is that a great program. You can setup scans to work around his habits and you will never even realize it is defraging. For the rest of it I acquired Tuneup Utilities 2007. You can set it to clean the registry and other windows stuff that is prone to clogging up once a week or when ever.

This. I recommend OneCare to anyone who is relatively computer illiterate. It is seriously the most retard proof software ever.
