I'm trying to figure out maybe not a riddle per se, but a clue that a friend has given me. It isn't really a riddle, that's just the only word I could think of.
I need to think of what this is
It was a series of books, with the first coming out around 2003. They are children's books. It is being turned into a movie, that has been announced, but isn't out yet.
It isn't Harry Potter.
I'm completely stumped, as I know nothing about children's books.
What about A Series of Unfortunate Events. A film was made of the first three books, but I don't know about any plans to make films out of the rest of the books. Anyway, here is the Wiki link.
I'd say maybe the Spiderwick Chronicles, because the first one came out in 2003, but the film has already been released, so it couldn't be that unless your friend has their information wrong.
Edit: Eragon also came out in 2003, but again, the film has already been released.

I'll ask him, I think he said it wasn't this one though. Thanks for the help guys!
edit: he "thinks" the first book came out in 2003, it might have come out give or take a couple of years.
There's apparantly been announced that there's a movie coming out based on a book series called Sisters Grimm, so could be that (first book came out in 2005 though).
Oh wait, advising you twist your friend's nipples until he surrenders the answer is apparently a misdemeanour. I no longer advise this course of action! Suggest alternative, non-violent schoolboy pranks to counter his annoying schoolboy behaviour.

Since HHGTTG was a BBC radio series in 1978, published as a book in 1979, a 1981 BBC TV series, made into a Infocom computer game in 1984, DC comic book adaptations between 1993-1996, and a movie in 2005. Also, since it's not nominally a series of "children's books," it really doesn't fit the stated criteria, does it? :P
Besides, wasn't one movie butchery enough?
[EDIT: Damn, beaten. And only because I had to retype my post because the browser crashed. ]
I can't think of (or conjure up with Google) any other guesses that fit the criteria, but then I'm not really in the target demographic. Most of the other guesses are pretty good, but conflict with one or more of the provided restrictions. I share the suspicion that your friend may have one of the critical details wrong that would make correctly identifying the book in question impossible.
Percy Jackson, Sisters Grimm, Twilight Series, and Flanimals are all series, were all published within a few years of 2003, and have movies coming out.
So I guess we're waiting on hearing if any of them are correct. IMDB has a section on children's books made into movies, but its dreadfully short and any recent ones have been mentioned.
Adaptations for Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson's Neverland series -- published around your window -- are strongly rumored to be in the works, but I can't find anything concrete.
Could it be http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coraline Its a book for children, but I dont think it has a series, altho it does have a movie coming out in the future which looks very interesting.

Man, I completely forgot about Coraline. That's a good guess.
This reminds me of this time we played a game at an office party where you got a name stuck on your back and you had to ask people yes/no questions to figure out the name. My questions and the answers I got:
Do I speak English? Yes.
Am I American? No.
Am I British? Yes.
Am I a writer? Yes.
Do I write novels? No.
Do I write poetry? Yes.
Do I short stories? Maybe, but your more famous for poetry?
Am I dead? Yes.
Do you have a guess as to what my name was? Yeah, I didn't either, because my coworkers are idiots.

The name was Edgar Allen Poe.
That is both awesome and painful... possibly awesomely painful to think about.
Thanks for the help guys. I just asked, EVERY SINGLE one of the suggested ones, and it isn't any of them. I shall fish for more clues but considering this "friend" is an epic cunt :P I might just punch him in the dick.
He's under an NDA, sooo yeah. It's going to frustrate me. I shall know soon, and I shall revive this thread for all those who are interested.

Anyone who's under an NDA but still enagages others in guessing games is, de facto, an epic cunt. I suggest you go with your feelings. :P
I mean, do people realize that if you're under an NDA and someone guesses, you still can't say anything about it, including whether they are guessing right or wrong?

That pretty much changes the scenario, and this guy is being a jerk about it. You should make him feel bad about his poor choices.

Did you ask him in person, and if so, did he wink when he said no?

Nope.
Thanks for the reply, apparently it isn't Artemis Fowl though
He just said: "It's a popular series in the states, but you probably haven't heard of it"
hmmm.
edit: I thought it could have been: "Where the wild things are"
but it isn't.
Edit: Eragon also came out in 2003, but again, the film has already been released.
It could be either. It also is likely to be made into a videogame, so that will exclude a lot of childrens books. I'd probably say teen.

The girls love those books man, it's a cult. They aren't half bad, really. But they aren't all that, either.
Nah it isn't that. I got excited because it seems to fit the bill, but yeah, no go.
Arghhh I must find out!
Thanks a lot for the suggestions
Wikipedia says the first one came out in 2005.

thats all that goldern compass stuff
That movie's already been released and has a game.
Of course, this still assumes the friend has all their info right.
Any chance of getting more clues?
EDIT:

There's a book category too, but there are many, many books to choose from.
EDIT 2:
Oh god, I have too much time
Technically 2004.

That was written in, what, the 70s? And it's already been turned into tv shows, comic books, films and computer games. Years ago.
And it's not a children's book.
In fact, it didn't even start off as novels. It was originally written as a radio show then novelised.
You couldn't be wider of the mark if you'd suggested tinned Spam.

How about Septimus Heap: Magyk (announced to be released in '10)?
Magyk was published in '05.
This is what I was thinking, although it wasn't a series but they are starting to show previews for the movie.
Oh yeah.
