Well, you can usually get several t-shits (3+ is pretty easy), hats, various other knickknacks. Some of the most interesting things I've gotten over the past few years are 10 MTG Starter sets, an Internet Traffic Cop, a playground ball for Bully, many posters, a full set of D&D dice, MTG boosters, a Soul Caliber 2 player's guide, and other stuff. Your mileage may vary.
It does help if you are friendly with the people working. Pirates of the Burning Sea people were shooting shirts out of a cannon. After talking to the girl, taking pictures with the girl, and playing the game a bit she gave shirts to me and my buddy without having to fight for them from the cannon. (Maybe they give them to everyone and she's just good at making us feel like she's doing us a favor.)
I also had to make a deal with the PP to get the bandanna when I did as they were out of their allotment for the day. (I agreed to wear it while competing in Omegathon events)

Interesting.
Come to think of it, that did seem to be the tune all the vendors were singing - they didn't have anything LEFT to give away.

I made 4 rounds at the expo hall. I also ended up with all 7 of the Tomb Raider Dog Tag series, and about 6 set of D&D dice (as my game transitioned to a d10 system, no less) and various shirts from random people.
Different booths will change their swag each day too, so stop by often.

I was friends with one of the girls from uncharted. Not only did I get my shirt and some concept art (signed) from the game, I also got one of the rings when all was done (she slipped me the box, and an enforcer actually got angry at her for it...)

So do you just stop by and ask, 'hey, do you have any stuff I can have?'??

Pretty much. Most will have stuff on the table. If you are in the front of the line, grab and hope they don't say "$5." If you aren't in the front of the line, see what other people grab. If they grab it, you can too.

Interesting. Thanks! I normally try to avoid the whole 'ravenous mob' type crowd, but if we're talking free dice and cards, I'm willing to adapt.

Thats not possible here. I'm not sure when the expo hall opens, but whatever time it is, there will be at LEAST 45 million people in like 3 hours before hand. The only way to avoid the ravenous mobs at PAX is to stay home, which i don't reccommend for a second.

It's more polite to strike up a conversation with the expo peeps, but yes. that's one way.
This works also.
There is also the Halloween technique. Walk along the routes, hold open your bag, hope stuff falls in.

Also there are many unannounced random raffles. Microsoft (IIRC) had an hourly raffle two years ago that had great prizes of full games that was just a had to be in the right place, right time sort of thng.
Basically, keep your eyes open on the expo floor and be friendly.

Also, look around you. If you see someone with a kick ass bag, ask em which booth was handing it out. I wouldn't have my 7 Tomb Raider dog tags had i not seen a guy showing them off and asked. Most the people there will be totally cool telling you what booth it's at.
Getting clear directions how to ge there... that's a different story.. LoL

I wonder if they will be doing the same thing for those with Media Passes at PAX that a lot of other cons do, which is supply a bag preloaded with swag. Anyone go to previous PAXs on a media pass and able to shed some light on this for me?
You get a plastic bag with some stuff in it when you enter, unless you miss them somehow, and then there are usually at least a couple places in the expo hall with large paper bags that you can grab for free.

I went last year, and no... there was no media swag bag. I even had to go out of my way to get the normal bag that everybody else got.
Don't get me started on the whole "Media & Swag" argument though...

I worked in the media center periodically last year. Every press member that walked in with a valid badge was given the option to take a swag bag if they wanted. I'd say about 2/3-3/4 of them actually took one. We had several left over afterwards.

What I had good luck with was talking to people like Enforcers and People working in the booths for free things. I also got to Rock out on Rock Band last year after PAX ended because I impressed some Harmonix guys.

Is it the standard swag bag or is it a special one?

Standard. Nothing special about it.

That dude trying to use his badge to hustle business for his own con and weaseling the enforcers. That wins on douchery.
If you're a total xenophobe, try and find a person first day who isn't. *Make 1 friend - all the people here like the same stuff as you, it will be easy.* It's much easier to walk up to a booth and talk about how much you've loved this game forever and have them pass over some goodies then just facelessly pass by as a ghost. I think this is why my husband takes me - to get free stuff
Look, I am not using my media pass to "bag swag". However, conventions are known for their swag and some do something special for the media. WWI had a special swag bag for media (by Blizzard) and other cons sometimes have special things they give only to the media.
My primary use of the media badge is so I can go to each booth and hopefully get some exclusive content for my website. Swag is just a (nice) secondary perk.

Such is an impossibility for the Xenophobes of the world...which is why I'm forcing myself to give out cookies.
So I was thinking, should I bring my own bag or will there be bags there or what is the deal?
my understanding is that some form of bags are provided

Done D20 and all.
Standard. Nothing special about it.
Uh so im going to try and give a nice reply to this one...
Media is there at pax to work, not to get in early to get swag. Getting a media pass strictly to go after swag is kind of a douche move.
Which was?
Ed Fleming?

Didnt know he had a media badge.
I should bring mini bottles of maple syrup
