SEGA ANNOUNCES SONIC AND THE BLACK KNIGHT

A new addition to the Storybook Series of Sonic Titles

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (July 21, 2008) –SEGA of Europe Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. today announced Sonic™ and the Black Knight, an all-new Wii-exclusive adventure. Part of the storybook series of games that began with Sonic and the Secret Rings, this new title brings Sonic into the world of Arthurian legend and offers the worlds most infamous blue hedgehog the chance to become a knight. Using the unique Wii control system, this exciting game will take advantage of both the Wii Remote and the Nunchuk to offer an interactive experience that any Sonic fans will love.

Created by Sonic Team in Japan, this innovative game takes Sonic into a medieval world and arms him with a sword to aid in his effort to save the day. Sonic and the Black Knight will provide Sonic fans with an irresistible cast of characters and teach them all what it takes to be a true hero and the ultimate knight. With a series of missions taking place in stunning Arthurian-inspired locations, Sonic and the Black Knight promises to offer a fast-paced adventure that gamers of all ages will enjoy.

“After the success of Sonic and the Secret Rings we’re delighted to announce a second title in the Storybook Series,” said Gary Knight, European Marketing Director, SEGA Europe, “Following Sonic on his way to knighthood will excite players of all ages.”

Sonic and the Black Knight, exclusively for the Wii, will be out in Spring 2009.

    Bolded the unsettling part.

Didn't play Secret Rings? There were other characters, but you only played as Sonic. They kind of need other characters, to ya'know, have a story.

Though Sonic obviously wasn’t speedy enough to get to LA before the curtains closed on this year’s E3, he has at least sprinted into clear view with the unveiling of upcoming Wii adventure Sonic and the Black Knight.

The title, which is once again under development at Sonic Team, if a continuation of the fine work put into place in the hedgehog’s debut Wii outing, The Secret Rings.

It’s set in medieval Britain, and sees Sega’s mascot fight with a sword and become a knight.

No other details have yet been announced, but don’t be surprised to see this one collecting one hundred rings at retail before the end of the year.
How the heck will fighting with a sword work with speedy gameplay?

Shouldn't Sega make games without Sonic if they want to experiment with other concepts? Or is their reasoning "We've already fucked-up Sonic forever, might as well use his franchise for experiments."

Also, WTF at the "irresistible characters" phrase. Does nothing get through to Sega?

Fans - "Stop it with the new characters! Just use Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, or even just Sonic by himself!"
    Sega - "OK, got it."
Next Nintendo Power Issue - "Sonic and the Xtreme Beanstalk: More Characters Than Ever!"
    Fans - "GODDAMMIT!"

One thing to consider is that as games get more complex, more characters really are necessary - otherwise we'd have "Yet again Sonic has to save the animals from being turned into robots" and people would fault them. I understand alot of people blame the extra characters for the games going downhill - but really if Sega had been able to make awesome games, no one would have cared that there were multiple characters in them. Quite the opposite in fact, we probably would have had Sonic Tennis, Sonic Golf, Sonic Soccer - much like Mario.

Look at Sonic Heroes. Had they managed to get rid of just a few more bugs (like falling through platforms) - it would have been a great example of making a great Sonic game including multiple characters. The swapping of characters to get past obstacles was very well done, and the characters made sense in the game - but instead the game was pushed early and was buggy enough for most gamers to just skip.

I don't have a problem with new characters unless they are playable. When Sonic 2K6 was announced, they made it out like Sonic was the only playable character. Then they revealed that Shadow and Silver had their own story modes. OK, fine. Then you find out that their are "amigos" that you have to play as every now and then, many that are unsatisfying to play as (Why does Tails throw rings now?).

So, when you get down to it, Sega spent all the development time figuring out gameplay for a dozen characters, rather than perfecting the gameplay of a few.

Sega... you don't have enough Sonic games in development at the moment or what?

If they are going to go ahead and make another full on Sonic platformer for the Wii I wish they had made it a 2D side scroller like Nintendo did with the Wario Shake.

As much as I like Shadow, killing all of the bad/good enemies to go to a different level was just plain retarded and was one of the main reasons the game sucked.

Oh and that also made chaos control redundant since it was basically a "haha you skipped half of the enemies screw you oh and by the way we thought it'd be a good idea to make you automatically grab the chaos emerald" button.

    My point was really this:

Shadow the Hedgehog(the game, not the character) was everything that was wrong with the Sonic franchise:

Poorly implementing new features(the gunplay that still wasn't effective as standard dashing, stupid good or evil decision making) without fixing the basics like the fucking camera.

The werehog in Sonic Unleashed looks like it might be the same thing, and it has the entire team working on it without rushing it. I highly doubt Sonic and the Black Knight has the whole team behind it, so I'm very strongly of the opinion that the swordplay will be just another poorly implemented feature. Either it'll just be a simple jerk-mote-to-slash thing that changes little(most likely), or it'll be be an attempt at actual swordplay that'll quite likely suck(less likely, given the press release. The demographic this seems to be targeting would not be about 1:1 swordplay, I'm guessing).

I don't hate Sega, honest(that new Destroy the World RPG looks tits), and I don't hate the Sonic franchise(Bioware Sonic RPG ftw!), but I've been burned bad recently by the next gen Sonic game(everyone but Sonic is unplayable), and Sonic and the Secret Ringswant to move on to the next area! Ha! First you must clear a dozen challenges such as 'clear the level with only one ring'!), and I have zero reason to believe Sonic and the Black Knight will have anything exciting or innovative.

So is Sonic Team USA working on anything? Seems odd that Sega would take away development for the Wii game away from them seeing as how they made Secret Rings.

I'm not entirely sure you even played Shadow.. :|

The gunplay was so much more effective then anything else in the game. As ridiculous as it is it did actually work quite well.

While Shadow the Hedgehog was a ridiculously stupid game it still was pretty fun.

Admittedly, I rented it and got the to Glyph-something-or-other level. Never beat it. Didn't need to beat Sonic Heroes to know I didn't care for it either.

My brother and I got brainstorming and idea the other night, about what must be going on in the Sega boardroom. Like, this goes so deep that and theres so many layers of people who have to sign off on the ideas that it boggles the mind how these ideas actually see daylight.

In a nutshell, it just is mind boggling that someone suggested that Sonic becoming a werewolf was a great idea. And that person convinced enough people to make it happen.

Then, months later, someone was playtesting the werehog and decided that the arms needed to be MORE RUBBERY. And people must have AGREED.

And down the hall, a light lit above a Sega employee's head.

"I have it!" He cried. "I know what the people want! I know exactly what the Sonic franchise has been missing!"

    Swordplay.

I think the werehog idea is kind of interesting...
I wouldn't mind being able to completely skip the nighttime sections though.

Now I'm just plain confused. They worked on both Sonic 2006 and Secret Rings at the same time? What a lack of foresight on Sega's part.

As for why I'm confused, I read somewhere else that the mach speed sections in Sonic 2006 were originally being done by the Secret Rings team, but got pulled off it to finish that game in time for the Wii's release window. While I can't speak for Secret Rings, I now better understand why Sonic Team ended up with a game so fundamentally broken as Sonic 2006. The story, however, has no excuse.

Someone should make a thread about this...

I’ve received my issue of the Issue #232 September 2008 Nintendo Power with Sonic and the Black Knight as the cover story. Some of the key points that I think should be worth mentioning with direct NP text put in quotes:

-Developed by the same people as Sonic and the Secret Rings

-”This time, a sorceress named Merlina summons Sonic to the mythical realm of King Arthur, but it seems the fabled monarch has somehow been corrupted and now rules the land as the tyranical Black Knight.”

-Uses a similar storybook device as Secret Rings

-”As Sonic runs along, a simple flick of the Wii remote will execute a basic slash, which is enough to dispatch most low-level grunts.”

-More advanced swordplay consists of the ability to thrust, parry, and even pull off a buzz-saw maneuver midjump.

-”During out demo, we saw the hedgehog leap from a high precipice, then thrust the blade into a wall to slow his decent, sparks flying impressivly as steel cut through brick”

-”Combat is integrated in such a way that most of the time you can slice through any who stand in your path without even slowing down”

-Sonic is controlled with the Control Stick.

-”Our hero begins his quest as a mere knave. Only by becoming a full-fledged knight will he have any hope of defeating King Arthur.”

-”his sword, a talking blade named Calibur, serves as a mentor”

-If you help civilian townfolk in need of assistance, you’ll earn points toward knighthood. If you smite one of those civilians, your reputation will take a hit.

-”At the end of each stage, the game tallies your good and not-so-good deeds and updates your rank accordingly.

-You can purchase items from residents. “Sonic can aquire everything from gauntlets to magical tomes to new swords, and when equipped, each article bestows him with a unique benefit.”

-About 200 items in all, with some being able to be combined with others to make new ones.

-You have the option to go online and trade items with friends.

-Rings come in burlap sacks instead of monitors.

-Sonic uses magic elementals to help him do various things, such as a bounce pad or a speed boost. They look like chao heads. The red ones give him a jump and the blue give Sonic a speed boost.

-Sonic can cross large gaps by firing a ballista and grinding the rope to the other side.

-”On the audio side, veteran composer Jen Senoue is taking a smiliar approach, injecting familiar Sonic themes with a Celtic flavor.”

-”Each stage has multiple branching paths and searching for townsfolk and treasure chests provides an element of exploration that recalls Sonic’s early Genesis days.”

-”the camera will occasionally pan to a side-scrolling perspective for a quick dose of classic 2-D action”

-SBK Bringing back the skill system from Secret Rings, but they’re trying not to have the skill system interfere with the game’s tempo this time around.

-The mission structure also returns but the developers hope to make it less arduous.

-”And there will be no dinosaur eggs!”

-”Just as they subbed in for such characters as Ali Baba and Aladdin in Sonic and the Secret Rings, a number of familiar faces will assume Arthurian personas in SBK.”

-”This time, however, some of Sonic’s friends will be playable. Each hero will boast unique abilities, and though the team isn’t ready to divulge the full cast just yet, we do know the identities of two playable comrades: Knuckles, who brandishes two swords at once, and Shadow.”

-Playing as these other characters is entirely optional. You will be able to play through game as Sonic, or switch to the other characters if you choose.

-”When people see that Sonic is wielding a sword, they’ll probably have certain expectations of the multiplayer mode. And all I can say is that we’re thinking along those same lines.”

-While the old guages from Secret Rings are gone, a new special guage will “bestow him with similarly impressive powers. The meter fills gradually whenever Sonic vanquishes an enemy or snags a purple elemental, and when it reaches a certain point you can unleash a powerful combination attack capable of tearing through multiple foes in quick succession. You simply press the B button to lock onto the nearest enemy, flick the remote to strike him down, then press B again to move onto the next unfortunate soul. If you chain together enough smitings before the guage is depleted, Sonic will receive a speed burst at the end of the string.”

-”the team behind Sonic and the Black Knight is keenly aware of the franchise’s past missteps, and their enthusiasm for doing right by the series is infections”

Those are some key things I pulled out. If you want more, I suggest you pick up the September 2008 issue. It’s number 232 of Nintendo Power.

EDIT: I’ve thrown up some scans from the magazine to hold you over until some official images are put up.

Ughh, so they're taking all the stuff that made Secret Rings good and getting rid of it for the stuff that have made Sonic games bad?
