Platform: Nintendo DS
Release Date: Fall 2008
UPC: TBD
Genre: Strategy
Player: 1 - 4 players
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the beginning, there was nothing but a void, and from the void five gods created the world, each exercising their great power to shape the world with five different but brilliant colors.
Earth created the basis for all things; Water soothed it; Fire imbrued it with vitality; Wind breathed into it freedom; Harvest provided it with nourishment.
Fish, beasts, and finally beings called man came into existence. The power of the gods brought harmony among all living things and the world gave way to an age of glory.
However, prosperity created darkness in the hearts of man, and from that darkness demons were birthed. The demons controlled the same five elements as the gods and rose against them. A chaotic battle for the world had begun.
Thus opened the gates of an age of darkness, where man trembles in fear, helpless as the awesome powers rage around them. It marked the beginning of a long-lasting age that would test their faith between the gods and the demons.
A completely re-imagined remake of the PC classic that launched the god-sim genre, “Populous DS†brings the power of the gods into the palm of the player’s hands. The unique features of the Nintendo DS improve upon the original as touch-screen controls, dual-screens, and versus play with up to 4 players wirelessly have been implemented. The gameplay is fresh for returning players as multiple gods each with their own unique miracles have been added, while returning fans will recognize the classic maps from previous editions of Populous in homage to this legendary series.
KEY FEATURES
- A Classis is reborn on the DS! - The interface is built around the stylus and touch-screen controls while retaining the feel of the classic. Actions taken on the bottom screen play out on the top screen.
- Additional Gods and Miracles – 5 different elementally imbued gods, each with their own unique miracles and demon counterpart, are now selectable rather than just one.
- More Single-Player Missions and Variety – Challenge Mode with 50 missions to clear as well as Free Play Mode including a “Find The Warrior†mini-game.
- 4-Player Wireless Multiplayer – Versus Mode allows up to 4 players to compete unleashing disasters such as earthquakes, tidal waves and volcanic eruptions to wreck havoc on opponents’ lands!
- A Must-Have for Populous Fans – The most popular and classic maps from previous editions pay homage to the roots of the legendary series.
I see they kept the same amount of viewable terrain as the original game. I was hoping they'd zoom it out a little bit. Still, one of my all-time favorite games in a portable format means I'll be getting it
Somewhere between 5-10 years ago I got ahold of Populous and tried it out. For the life of me, I could not get past the viewable area, the controls, or the interface. I'm pretty sure I was used to Warcraft 2 and Starcraft at the time so that's probably why.
Guess I'll check it out, though, more portable strategery is good.
For a second I thought this was that other game from my megadrive... where you had four characters... Was it called megalomania or something? (No, really, does anyone remember this?) Now that made me excited.
But Populous is a substitute with an acceptable level of retro awesomeness.
Megalomania was a superb game, could never beat the final Epoch though, just couldn't build defences fast enough.
I'll buy this dammit! I played it like once waaay back in the day and loved it but my parents wouldn't get it for me so all i had was that brief taste.
I think the reason some people are complaining about the viewable area on the original populous is because you didn't play the original populous.
Populous was a game created for the Amiga and then subsequently ported to various other formats. For example the screen resolution on the Amiga version was higher therefore everything didn't seem as scrunched up as say the snes version.
I would kill for some modern day versions of Bullfrog games, Powermonger... so much time lost on that game. And where the hell is a new Syndicate game?
Anyway, this'll probably end up bought and eating into any time I have in which I am conscious.
I've got a spare copy of Portal, if anyone wants it message me.
We had populous on our Amiga 500. I didn't really get it, being about eight at the time and all. Although I did think it was amazing that when your guys ran past some trees, birds would fly out of them. I didn't really know what I was supposed to be doing beyond that and raising and flattening land. I had this vague notion that the game was epic but no idea how or why.
The only time I ever played the original Populous was waaaaay back in late 91 or 92. I don't think I was quite old enough to get the point of the game. It's much more hands off than I was used to in terms of strat games. Just didn't get it.
I played the third game on some workstations in high school and thought it was fun, but was expecting something along the lines of a realtime Civ based on my limited experience years ago.
Anyone know what the best home console port of the game was? IIRC, it was on the TG16, the Genesis and the SNES.
I still have the utterly awesome Syndicate box. Too bad the floppies are dead Wouldn't mind a rerelease in any form, that was one of my favorite DOS games.
I really didn't think much of this game the first time. Its like the king of incredibly small and restricted viewable play area.
Well maybe the game things your the king of.... Well... You know where I'm going with this.
But seriously this game was GREAT on the SNES. Viewing size or not, this will be one hot DS game.
Pokemon Safari - Sneasel, Pawniard, ????
That one was pretty neat too. The view point was awesome from what I remeber. I never had the $$ to go out of my way to buy it when it was out though.
Do you mean first RTS on the SNES or first RTS ever? Because >Stonkers< has it thoroughly whooped in terms of overall firstness.
I made a game, it has penguins in it. It's pay what you like on Gumroad.
Currently Ebaying Nothing at all but I might do in the future.
Moar amiga games on DS, I mean where the fuck is Syndicate?
If the latter, I'm interested.
