So, the new 360 dashboard is out. It updated the way one navigates through the features of the Xbox as well as adding some new ones. It uses Twist UI, which is the same UI used for Windows Media Center and the Zune. Some of the main feature updates are the ability to install games on your hard-drive, allowing for faster load times and reduced strain on your disk reader. The game is still required to be in the Xbox to run its content.
They have also added digital avatars, akin to Mii's (on the Wii). These are essentially your online persona and you can use them to share photos as well as play in some games among other things. You can also download Netflix movies directly to your Xbox, provided you have an account. Is it awesome? Well, personally I can't say because my Xbox is not with me at the moment. I will update this later when I test it out (hopefully I don't forget that I started this thread again).
Reposting just because. Maybe someone should start a new thread since the OP looks uh non-existant.
OP should contain:
-Premiere Theme pics
-How to netflix (foreign and domestic, cockblock by sony, why are the movies old, etc?)
-How to delete 0 achievements (guide, achievements, find 0 and hit x)
-How to save game to HDD (game tab, highlight game {left most option}, hit Y)
e- just noticed watch instantly is one movie on at a time, so you can't have a movie playing at the same time on your Roku, PC, 360, PS3, your friend's 360 all at once.
It might be just fine, but why turn your console into a "me too!" copycat of the Wii nearly 3 years into its lifespan? I'm of the same opinion as Tycho about that, it's like some kind of odd capitulation or concession where none is really needed. Yes, the Wii is a force of nature. But the 360 is also a big success. Why the wild course change in the middle of the journey?
I'm fine with it. Just as long as there's an xbox 360 classic skin. With no miis. And allows me to keep using the icons I've already paid money for. And blackjack. And hookers.
Personally, I don't really care about the new avatars, dashboard, or any of the new services. I only buy one month gold Live memberships whenever a multi-player game that interests me comes out (so far: CoD4 & Halo 3,) and that's more than enough. (I tire of online multi-player quickly.)
I just want more games really, and I wasn't dissapointed: FFXIII, new Prince of Persia, Mirror's Edge, a psuedo new Halo announcement, and RE5 all pleased me greatly.
So far I don't mind it. If I don't really want to get into the community aspect, I won't. The only thing that bothers me I hope this new display method isn't a "coverflow-esqe" adds nothing but is shiny move. If it actually improves the usability of the dash, such as the cluttered game blade and marketplace, then I'm all for it.
I have no problem with it, but I do think they should take July-November to fine-tune it a little bit. Things look a little too sparse and gray to me, and while I don't mind putting avatars all over the damn thing, it just seems like an endless sea of gray with a couple little boxes that send you into games/Arcade games/movies/options.
I do like how blades live on through the guide button. For everyone else, I think maybe they should include a classic option to appease those who were infuriated by the new dashboard unveiling. I guess.

Tentatively, I hate the new interface. It shows me all kinds of things I don't want to see, and does so with large, obnoxious images. It looks slow to navigate, too. Visually, it's barren, and just all-around uninteresting. Avatars, while I'm not opposed to the idea (I love Miis and all), look terrible integrated into the interface like they are.
I'll have to use it for a while to really know if I hate it though. And either way, I don't care that much.
And, regardless of any of that, the new guide is awesome. And I'll accept the new interface in return for it. If they improve the music player interface too, I'll be super-happy.
The wii-copycat sort of stuff seems to be more of a second thought than it is the primary reason for rebuilding everything, to be quite honest.
Netflix and the new party system alone are pretty fucking huge and probably required considerable changes to the dashboard as it is. If you're going to go for it, go for it.
Software updates are precisely the kind of updates you can and SHOULD be doing. I've been using my xbox as a media device just as much as I use it for games, if not more so. It's been invaluable in that area, and will continue to be.
The avatars are "eh," but I understand why. Nintendo and sony both will now have persistent online personas. If you're running the only network that people are paying for, you always have to be giving the same things as everyone else and then some.
Now that you can transfer games to the hard drive I wonder if games are going to be allowed to start requiring the hard drive.
Strangely absent were the in-your-face blinking and ever-changing banner ads.... surely we don't think they will all be regulated to those boxes?
hell no - there will be NEW ad space all over that thing - so in the future, you will see ads surrounded by ads - what fun
I personally had a secret pride in the 360 being the system of absolute choice and dominating so righteously in every important way. I feel the sting of Mii/PS3 layouts... and it feels desperate where desperation is not needed.
That being said... to take advantage of any of the cooler new features you have to buy a bigger hard drive and after two 360 replacements and then a trade in to a new system with the new cd-rom drive I simply can't imagine spending any more money on hardware.
For 179 bucks for the 120 gig hard drive, I figure I'm about half-way to a PS3 and 5 blu-rays so I don't see being able to take advantage myself.

For me the 360's current interface was the best for its functionality (Actually, it seamed a little better before the last update. I don't like having demos under "My Game Library"). Now I hate the damn thing.
I think it was telling enough that the guy in the suit was all enthusiastic about unveiling it, and then no one clapped. Honestly, MS.
the people at the e3 press conference aren't the people that stuff like avatars is for
Who are the people that "stuff like avatars" are for?
I mean, other than Wii owners
It's for all the 360 owners who don't even know that their console has the Live Arcade or can download Movies/TV shows, which (although probably a suprise to people on these boards) is a majority of the user base.
The great majority of Walmart consumers have their 360 and just use it the same as they would their old playstation. They turn it on and put in a game and the game boots up, nothing more. The present dashboard doesn't do anything to help resolve that situation as it's a confusing cluster fuck of redundancies and content hidden behind multiple menus.
Avatars inherently create a "game" on the dashboard and encourage people to play with it more. In addition by creating a more streamlined, user-friendly, method for accessing and viewing content in the new dashboard all these people that don't use it now will be more likely to find all this "NEW" stuff their console can do.
There is a covert irony to it all in that it may seem like they are copying the Wii interface, but the Wii copied their interface off of Apple. But there is a reason that so many people copy Apple. Despite all the areas that company is lacking they create simple, efficient, user-friendly interfaces.
I think it was telling enough that the guy in the suit was all enthusiastic about unveiling it, and then no one clapped. Honestly, MS.

Who are the people that "stuff like avatars" are for?
People who like games like The Sims & Animal Crossing. Seriously, I've purposely avoided letting my 7-year old daughter know about the 360 avatars, because I know that once she finds out, she'll be begging to play the 360 all the time just to mess around with avatar creation and customization.
Personally, I see nothing particularly wrong with one company taking a good idea that another company has and expanding upon it like Microsoft is doing here (from the videos shown, it looks like avatars will be much more customizable than Miis). I mean, lots of companies have taken the idea of achievements from Microsoft and included it in their own games and I'm okay with that 'cause I like achievements.
As for the dashboard, I'll wait until I actually use it before passing judgment. I know I am way hyped for the other stuff that is coming with the update like copying games to the hard drive, 16:10 support, and Netflix.

Surprisingly (or unsurprisingly considering the situation), my friend didn't know that Xbox Live Arcade existed until he was up at my place one time and saw me dicking around with Arcade titles.
Granted, this was, like, practically two years ago, but I see where you're coming from.

I think redesigning the dash board they've used for three years is going to be bite them in the ass. People are used to it - it works, and it's functional. Redoing it just for the hell of that is going to alienate someone.
Tycho's comments on the matter seem pretty apt. To me, it screams 'identity crisis.'

I love when people say "cluster-fuck"
also; i agree that it is like a game, the creation of miis.
After this announcement, I was reading a New York Times article from that morning about Microsoft's upcoming keynote at E3. What it discussed was, chiefly, the way the Xbox has been pigeonholed as the system for hardcore gamers. How there was little appeal to casual gamers, etc. I've also seen people talk about how inaccessible the current blades system is. I loved the blades myself, but I can see them as being a bit hard to acclimate to. But the main consensus of the article was that the Xbox needed a way to appeal to the casual gamer.
Here it is.
The blades system has been relegated to the guide button now, a development I like. And the future dashboard is cleaner, with modern minimalist white space and large graphics. Very much like Apple's Coverflow. And there is a more human aspect to friends now, as they can be represented by a humanoid shape rather than a picture.
So overall, it is tuned more to casual gamers.
However the new functionality is aimed at people like us. Eight person party system cross-game, with the ability to watch movies together and have 8 person chat? Fuck yea, I've been waiting for this for a long time. Netflix integration? Great too. Don't like the avatars? Keep the gamerpic, it's been confirmed that you can choose to keep it.
Yeah the shots of the themes on it makes it look really nice. And it's my understanding that all current themes will work with it.
EDIT: The one thing I really want on the new dashboard is some sort of alphabetizing for the movies/demo's etc. I mean, I know they're already in alphabetical order, but I want to be able to skip to, say, "S" without having to scroll through the first 200 items on the list. It's just terrible design.
My 360 will stay play games the same way, right? And I can still find my friends to invite them? Then whatever. IThe blade design should still be an option, but I know it won't be. So I'll adapt.
I just hope the avatars can be made to resemble spartans, special forces commandos, stormtroopers, that kind of thing. And not just the generic, pacifist Lego-people look of the Nintendo's Miis.
And will the option to set your own background go away? I kind of liked that idea. So, yes, burning questions. But not that burning. I was looking at my dashboard for about five minutes of the several hours spent on my 360 today.
I'd be willing to bet money most of you who say you don't like it now either a) like it once you read sane, reasonable posts like the ones from ilmmad and chesspieceface or b) once it's actually out and you've tried it.

Judging from what I've seen so far, I'm not really happy about it and I'm not sure it solves the core problems they're having with the current UI, ie confusing, difficult to find what you want, etc. Apart from looking empty and bleak, it looks just as convoluted and maze-like as before.
I'm not sure it's a good idea to redesign it completely this far into the 360's lifespan. I'd rather see them improve on and work with the UI that's already there, instead of aping the Wii, which in turn does it's best to ape Apple.
Or just bite the fucking bullet and ask Apple to design a new UI for them.
I'm not sure I understand the resistance here. The Xbox360s user interface is a fucking atrocity. It pukes looks over function - some pissant 'designer' focused too much on making it look pretty with the blades and not enough time actually planning out a structured, functional user interface. A black bag full of scorpions and computer games would be an improvement.
Whoa, whoa. The new dashboard will let us have private voice-chat with more than one other person?
That alone is enough for me to not care what else it does.
That might be nice feature to use while playing Bad Company, where you can only chat with your squad of four people, and often times people get tossed into opposite teams or into the wrong squads, etc.
All in all, I am looking forward to this redesign. I like the new look of it, and I like that I can install games onto my HDD, if only for seeing those sweet as icons. I'm glad to hear that I can keep my avatars instead of completely reverting to this Mii-like system, because I like my little happy crab avatar.
