What is up with the aspect ratio on this hurr monitor.

HAY GUYS.

Me again.

Got a new monitor second hand from a friend. 20" V7: clicky.

I got some HDVGA cables and hooked it up, but it was a total nightmare. Colours were washed out and crucially text was really bitchy-hard to read. Very unfocused, slightly stretched. Really not pleasant.

All I can see is that I was running at 1280 x 1024 rather than 1400 x 1050.

Would that cause trouble? I mean I did fiddle with the resolution a fair amount.

Yeah, if you don't have it at the native resolution it'll look all ugly. Did the display come with a CD with drivers on it? Updating your video drivers might pop the resolution in there too.

    No, nothing like that.

Guess I'll go re-buy those cords.

1400x1050 is such a non standard resolution you'll probably have to add it manually, I think you can do that with Riva tuner.

    Weird ... it's a 4:3 LCD monitor that isn't 15".

1400x1050 should show up in the resolution list, since older CRTs used to have that as an option. You probably need to update video drivers as suggested though.

Old CRTs used to have everything that was inside their scan range as an option.
A CRT screen don't have a resolution, it just displays the lines it's given.

I have pretty much the latest drivers for my card (8800 gtx), but I'll ask my friend if he has any discs that came with the monitor.

I know how to add a custom resolution.. but would this give me problems when I was playing games? I'm pretty sure most games don't have that res... but the ratio...

Ugh, I am a little confused. Judging by the post above me I wouldn't be able to display higher res than my monitor in games if I used the TFT?

I think I've run some games at 1600... or am I making that up. Let me check.

Crysis at 1280x1024, which is max... so it looks like potential resolution is delimited by my current monitor, correct? So if I switch up to this other monitor, I'd choose this 1400 res or whatever it is? As in it would be available in-game?

And I suppose I'd always need to choose 4:3 ratios?

I both love and hate how in computing you can know a bunch of shit and still have to start from the very basics every time you learn about something new...

Correct, computer LCD screens generally can not display a resolution above the physical number of pixels it has(, unlike TVs where HD-Ready usually means a 768 line screen which can display a 1080 line signal).

Most newer 3d games are good at allowing resolutions added by the user. Crysis and Source games at least shows all my added resolutions.

And selecting 4:3 ratios is usually* best on a 4:3 screen yes.

*unless you have one of those stupid 19" screens with 1280*1024 5:4 resolutions. Oh how I hated that resolution.

It really depends on the game, some of them only have a few set options, whilst others give you everything under the sun to choose from. A lot of them you can manually alter the resolutions by changing the config file. I'm pretty sure Crysis uses r_height and r_width for resolution which you can add to a cfg file.
