What is this game?

Elona is an interesting game made by Lafrontier, a Japanese guy. The game has both an english and Japanese option.

The game is, at its heart, a variation on Rougelikes. You pick a race, then you pick a class, and then your deposited into the world, free to do as you wish. The game controls pretty much like any other in the genre. However, pressing Z will bring up a convenient menu allowing you to select every action you can do.

You start the game having somehow survived a ship sinking, you wake up in a cave which will be your home. Once you go through a little tutorial the world is open to you. The whole wide world.

The game has a world map that you traverse, scattered across it are towns, randomly generated dungeons, and monster encounters.

One feature notably missing from this game is permadeath. That's right, a rougelike with no permadeath. Don't think that makes the game easy though. The game maker desided to use this to make it almost even more hard. Everything can and will kill you. You can get mutated into a horrible beast, an alien can impregnate you and turn entire towns into hives for them, etc etc.

You have complete freedom to do what you wish. Personally I haven't even looked at the main quest. I'm too busy exploring dungeons, learning magic and getting my piano skill up to earn millions via performing.

It's a real fun, addictive game with a weird sense of humor. So how about other people here play it besides me.

I was doing seriously awesome - had a blessed machine gun with glass bullets, doing stupid damage (like 10d3 + 6d2 with a +25 to hit), and was lucky enough to have that mysterious douche in the first town die (the one with no name). So there I was, with my 2d18 sword, my +20 armor, and my machine gun, chewing up everything in the puppy dungeon like there's no tomorrow. Suddenly, I make a learning check and realize the sword I'm carrying is Ragnarok, and the words "Let's RAGNAROK!" show up on the screen, followed by every available square being filled with angry dragons.

    ok, trying out this game and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get any of the changes I've made in the options menu to stick
    I can get into the options menu, then for instance scroll down to music, then use the side arrows to set music off
    but then any keys I press that take me up to the previous menu don't actually save the change I just tried to make

    99% of the options require you to restart.
