Enjoy your purchase, you've got a lot of good gaming ahead of you. And if you are still even a little inclined, keep the PSP in mind as well, because it is similarly awesome.

I own a DS, love it, and can't bring myself to get a PSP as I tried one and couldn't stand the way the controls felt in my hands. Nevertheless, I'm going to write a bit in PSP's favor.

Provided the system itself is comfortable for you to use, it has gaming merits:
    • The powerhouse Final Fantasy Tactics with an amazing localization(and some inexplicable slowdown)
    • The uniquely charming rhytm side-scrolling RTS Patapon
    • Disgaea for obsessive-compulsive sRPG powergaming (I have it for PS2 and simply can't be satisfied with this game on the DS's screens, it's not made for it and thusly it feels goddamned tiny)
    • Monster Hunter Freedom & Freedom 2 for a thinking man's action game that's 99% about continual, epic boss fights and knowing your stuff, with some RPG trappings like equipment crafting and helping your town grow. Real skill is king, game never ends, high learning curve.
    • Final Fantasy I & II remakes, with far better music and somewhat richer graphics than GBA.
    • How the heck did I forget Metal Gear Portable Ops? Note that the plus ver omits the story mode for some reason.
    • Crisis Core, which I unfortunately don't know enough about, but you do get to play Zack instead of his pathetic wanna-be pretender Cloud.
There's more, but I don't know them enough to comment. Slash Signal for PSP please.

Edit: Argh, late to the party by 12 minutes, heh. *shuts off the signal*

I played the demo. It was okay, but not my cup of tea, really. I also had a bit of trouble getting used to the way it worked. A Unit's AP limit, for instance, didn't seem very obvious or concrete, but maybe I just didn't understand it.

I used to own a DS and sold it. I currently own a PSP.

Personally I felt the DS had a better battery life, and felt far better to hold in my hands.

The PSP screen I like alot better than the DS, and graphically speaking the PSP is, in my opinion, far more powerful than the DS.

The PSP has lots of great multimedia features (ie. movies look great on it), both DS and PSP have online features.

Speaking for myself I like the PSP better, it feels like a more "mature" toy (hardware wise) ... but that is soley my feeling and opinion, undoubtedly others will feel otherwise. The DS definately has alot of great games and should not be underestimated ... hell portable Civ is enough to make me want to pick the damn thing up again.

    I'm currently enjoying

    Final Fantasy Tactics
    Final Fantasy Crisis Core
    Field Commander (Advance Wars Clone)
    Wipout Pulse
    Space Invaders Extreme

I also just upgraded from a 1 gig stick to 4 gig, and I'm looking forward to downloading a shitload of PSP demo's off the PSN store.

I went with a DS when I had this choice before me and don't regret it. I was saddened to find I can't replay tactics with new dialogue and cutscenes or play crisis core, but I got over it.

I like the DS because it is kind of gimmicky. The touch screen is great and games like ouendan and layton make really good use of it. The PSP is cool, but seriously the games I want to play on it would be fine as a 360 or PS3 game. I don't want to play a 100+ hour game on a portable, because I don't like playing handheld systems at home, but maybe that is just me.

DS just seems more appropriate for handheld and the games reflect it. Someone earlier said PSP has plenty of games like this, but I am not aware of any I would want to play off the top of my head.

Oh and handheld games to me are games that can be played in 3-15 min bursts, when I am on a train or waiting somewhere since that is where I play my DS. So playing a level in Super Mario advance or solving a puzzle in layton, etc.

Of course I never really researched PSP that much either, so I could just be really missing out.

Alright, my impressions of Warhammer 40k: Squad Commander is mixed. I love the universe and the first game I ever played on anything was X-COM:UFO Defense. Mixing the two as far as the squad combat level is kinda cool...

There are def. cons though. The inability to rotate teh camera to see around the 3D landscape is bloody annoying. If you move a member of your squad close enought to say..a building, it'll go transparent..but not until they are moved there. Kind of a pain in the ass for an AP based game. That is my BIGGEST gripe.
Also, the AI seems wayyyy too easy. I remember the aliens and shit in XCOM being sneak and fucking me up, but this just seems easy.

The entertainment value is worth buying used, but not brand new.

The PSP has it's fair share of games that provide 15 minute blasts of fun, but I think the DS probaly wins out in this area. It's easy to whip the DS out of your pocket and play quickly then put away, with the PSP I find for myself I need to a carry on bag to bring it out, it just seems longer to me to get going on it. I found the DS to be the more "portable" of the two systems and it also seems the more durable of the two systems.

With that said I like my PSP alot better. I love the gorgeous LCD screen, and I find the PSP is perfect for those nights when my wife is monopolizing the TV set with American Idol, or Singstar. Being able to put some movies on the PSP is also a great feature, one I utilize often.

Overall I agree with what most people are saying here ... both systems are pretty awesome and you can't go wrong with either.

To offer what's like to be another uncommon perspective, I've mind to disagree upon DS RPG domination:

I've had my DS for years. It's played hours daily, and I'd not give it up. 'til last week, however, concerning RPGs it was a glorified GBA.

I expected the DS to handily snatch the RPG crown, most especially the Japanese sRPG, but what did come failed to ensorcle my pink little brain, while the PSP pulled a surprising reversal. The near future pray change this, with FFIV DS, CT DS, Sonic Chronicles, Valkyrie Profile, Tales, Dragon Quests, and Infinite Line, but the dearth of in-depth sRPG's still feels an open wound.

Curiously, DS instead brought enjoyment of more leisurely pursits. Ace Attorney, Brain Age and Flash Focus are all keepers, and maintain some of my high-level functions in better working order.

o_O Don't tell me that hit the PSN store. Or did you do it via a PS3 transfer?

Also, both systems have great RPGs. PSP's great for strategy RPGs(most of the DS ones lean towards mediocre), while the DS has has great adventure/text games and a few awesome traditional RPGs.

And if you include the GBA, the DS wins hands down.

Just don't count the PSP out.

I have both and love both. So, Pros/Cons.
The DS is truely portable and a sturdy little thing. I've dropped mine and don't really worry about it. And it's perfect for short little games (lunch breaks). It also has, in my opinion, a wider selection of off-the-wall unique games (Meteos, Izuna, etc). Advance Wars IS a great game. But it is visually and power-wise, inferior to the PSP. I've experienced slow down in games like Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles. Which is kind of sad. Also, some interesting ports are on the way like Ragnarok Online.

The PSP isn't something I like carrying around. I play it at home, at long stretches.. The games I've played aren't very pick up and play and the battery life is lacking. But Monster Hunter Freedom 2 ranks in my top 5 games I've spent the most time with (500+ hours) and I'm still no where near done with it. And Disgaea is an even bigger time sink.

yeah, I definitely play my DS more on the go, and use it more as a portable system (although I love playing some of the great games while at home as well.)

When I bought a PSP, I didn't buy it on the theory I'd also be using it primarily as a portable system. I actually thought of it as simply another console like a PS2 or something. I wanted it solely for the good games for it, particularly Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops (the first one, you know, the worthwhile one). The media functions don't hurt but I don't use them at all (I have an MP3 player and don't care about watching movies on the go), and really I expected to play the PSP mostly at home when I got it. Part of the selling point for me was the Tv output, something people usually mention as a big plus, but I was majorly let down by the fact that the TV output for games will only output to about 40% of the center of the screen, at which point, I'd rather just save myself the $20 for the cables and play it on the regular screen anyway. And that's what I do. I enjoy the games on the system, and I make do without tv output just fine, but something I always notice is how often I find myself plugging the system into the charger compared to the NDS. Fortunately this isn't much of a problem as I just about never take the PSP out of my little apartment, but it kind of reinforces the idea that I pretty much use my PSP at home, and play my NDS both at home and while I travel or whatever.

The PSP offers a lot of things the DS does not in the way of graphical power, it's funny no one mentions that.

You won't find a nice 3d slash-em-up like Monster Hunter on the DS, you just won't. You also won't have games like God of War or Tekken running on the tiny dual screens, at least not in the 'original' game format, fact aside that YES those are all "ports" or whatever, they are the kinds of game a PSP can handle without problem that you just wont see on the DS.

Now that that's out of my system, the DS is really the ultimate "portable" system if that's what you want, although pulling out the stylus to scribble something to death can be annoying to everyone involved on public transit =) The DS is really easy to carry and use, I find the PSP more of a "use at home on the can" machine, or something I pull out at a friends house (I compare it to my Macbook pro, never pulled out and used on the bus like a "normal" laptop.)

    tl:dr?

both are great, but a DS is better for playing on-the-go.

I'm sort of in a similar situation as the OP. I need a device for work. A little background for you: I work at a callcenter overnight. Which means until about 4 in the morning, I don't get called. And we are not allowed to browse the internets.

They said I can bring in a portable device which is awesome, but I'm stuck as far as which to buy. And both is right out because my wife would kill me. "One or the other." I've compiled a list of games for both and while the DS wins out for games category, adding in the PSP's other functions, it evens things out. Considering the device will remain plugged in for the entire shift and I will not be using it on the go, just at work, battery life and portability are meaningless.

So, for my particular situation, any good recommendations? I'll understand if people just say to read the thread. I'm just looking for a compelling reason to go one way or another based off of my specific situation.

I play the psp more when there's no other game device to play at all, simply because in australia games are horrendously, hideously, mindmeltingly expensive, making the ds a pretty expensive portable gaming device and the psp a gaming wonder because it's games are allowed to go on special for half price.

The DS can be used as a portable and rechargable Alarm Clock which is much more handy than I thought it would be. It holds a charge forever when you use it JUST as an alarm clock. Also, the pictochat is great when you're in a dorm/barracks room and you want to talk to someone without other people hearing.

Oh...the games are the bee's knees too. I love RPGs and also quick mindless fun, which the DS has in equal amounts.

I got a DS about 6 months ago when facing the same choice.

    I regret it.

The display(s) ruin it for me. Shit is so fucking small it pretty much eliminates any desire for me to sit down and play it. I bought it specifically to play SRPG/tactics/RPGs, all of which tend to encourage large amounts of playtime, and playing on tiny ass screens for long periods just doesn't work.

I might like it more if I was into gimmicky games like Phoenix Wright or whatever, but they're not my style.

I'd say if you want to play in quick bursts with fanciful ideas and control schemes it might be a good system, but if you're looking to kick back in bed and play an RPG for a couple hours it kind of sucks. That's my take anyway. I haven't touched mine in months. (So put off on the system I didn't even bother picking up FFT:A2 which is one of the games that swayed me into it.)

You can do it through both. When I said I have Vagrant Story on my PSP, that's through custom firmware. That method can work with, I believe, almost any PS1 game. You could just pop in your PS1 disc and make an ISO of it to play on your PSP. How legal any of that is, I don't know. D:

I have both. DS I had shortly after lite was released. PSP picked up in January.

I basically have given my wife the DS and play the psp exclusively. The reason wasn't so much the games, the DS has tons of great games. Its the fact that I got spoiled by the psp's, large gorgeous screen and nice graphics. The tiny screen on the DS has always kinda pissed me off.

2nd reason is I use the psp for media stuff so I lug it around more so I also play games on it.

3rd is with custom firmware on the psp its very easy to make images of your umd games and run them off of your memory stick. I currently have a ton of great music and 6 games on my psp. I probably couldn't even tell you where 6 of my DS games are. (All of my physical psp titles are safely on a shelf.)

I've bought a couple of DS games, and they're all great. Playing PS1/2 games from the PSStore is also really fun, same with d/l themes, etc.

So the obvious solution is to get an N-Gage.
