Setting slideshows to music

So, my sister's wedding shower is tomorrow, and as my maid-of-honourly contribution to the war effort, I volunteered to go through our family photo albums and compile a nice slideshow of pictures of my sister from birth through her current age, set to music. I have the pictures (most of them, at least), and I have the music (or at least a general idea), but I'm not sure how to put them together. My initial thought had been to just do up a quick Powerpoint of all the pictures (with captions), compile a playlist of the MP3s, and hit play on both at the same time. That's still an option, but the person hosting the shower has said that she wants the slideshow and music to both just loop continuously for the entire time, so people can wander over at any time and look at/listen to it.

Are there any free, easy to use movie-maker programs that would work for me here? I'm using a non-Media Centre PC.

    In power point, go to:

slide show > set up show...

check the box "loop continuously until 'esc' "
