Transfering DVR recordings to an external hard drive

I just got myself a 500gig WD MyBook, and I'm attempting to transfer recorded programs from my Scientific Atlanta 8300HD DVR to it, but I cannot figure out how to do it. I've done a little googling and didn't find anything specfic enough to help my feeble brain. Any tips or ideas?

Just to be clear, its got a usb hookup for this exact thing (or I assume that's what its for). But now everywhere I'm reading says its a digital rights management issue. Why should expanding my hd space for my dvr be an drm issue?

It's unlikely the USB port on the DCT is enabled, you should call your cable company and ask if it is.
It's a content protection issue because recording an nice live HD program and ripping it off the device for computer use is not allowed.

The Scientific Atlanta 8300HD will only use an ESATA II drive for external storage. It will format the drive to a proprietary file system upon detecting the drive. But this can only be to add additional space, you can't use it for backup. Why you ask? It doesn't support copying between drives, and when you record a new show it just picks the drive with the most free space and records to it, you don't have any choice about where the recording goes. Also, a computer can't read the drive after you format it for your cable box.

They pretty much don't want you to keep backups.
