Stricken with grief at his own actions, yet burdened by his loyalty to his country and his personal sense of honor, Cecil at last decides to turn from the path of darkness and destruction. Enraged, the king accuses him of disloyalty, strips Cecil of his command, and sends him off to slay a mysterious beast that lurks in the nearby Valley of Mist. Cecil embarks on a fateful journey that will bring trials, betrayals, friendship, loss and self-discovery. Can Cecil open his eyes and become the man of honor that he must be? Dive into the first RPG to incorporate the innovative Active Time Battle system, now further enhanced and refined for the Nintendo DS. And making matters worse, the foreign gods have also arrived on Japanese soil, and they aren't very happy with the meddlesome, unemployed ninja. With disgruntled deities on the warpath, a sidekick to track down, and a missing sister out in the wild, it could all shape up to be one of Izuna's more exciting adventures. Ubersoldier 2: The End of Hitler
It is April 1945. Allied armies are closing on the Nazi capital Berlin. US planes are
roaming the skies over the Reich, and the thunder of Soviet artillery can be heard even in the Fuhrer’s bunker. The fall of the Nazi rule is imminent. Even the closest aides have abandoned Hitler and are trying to find an exit strategy out of the war. Still, a tightly knit group of SS generals and officers, involved in the most heinous and dark deeds, is seeking for a way to save the remnants of the Third Empire. They have conspired to move the leaders of the Reich, together with precious resources and classified equipment, to a remote hideout in the Tibet mountains. There, in the heart of Asia, they can wait for their time, kept safe by the tireless vigilance of zombie monstrosities created in the Nazi secret labs.

However, the German Resistance learned about this plan and is ready to prevent Hitler and his henchmen from escaping the vengeance of peoples. The HQ of the Resistance has dispatched their best spec ops team to foil this scheme and thereby deal another deadly blow to fascism. You’re Karl Stolz, nicknamed “UberSoldier”, a key member of the team and the main hero of the story. Together with your friends you must uncover the exact extent of the SS plan, face some of their bravest troops and best war machines, penetrate the occult secrets of the Black Order and travel halfway through the world to destroy your ultimate target.

XBLA

1942 Joint Strike
[Xbox Live Arcade] 1942: Joint Strike takes inspiration and influence from the 194X series of World War II-themed vertical shooters. The art, sound, and gameplay of the new game takes cues from the original 194X games, but stands out as its own unique entry. Gameplay resembles the classic 2D style that gamers expect, but the game utilizes a full 3D engine. Set in a World War II-themed locale, stages, vehicles, and weapons have the look and feel of WWII with some stylistic differences. The world in which 1942 takes place is not our own and the events that transpire are not historically accurate, nor are they intended to be. This is an alternate world where history and technology developed along their own paths. As a result, players jump into the cockpits of WWII-era aircraft to take on huge waves of incoming enemy fire, dodging explosions and missiles while challenging huge bosses at the end of each stage. New co-op "Joint Strike attacks" combine the powers of two aircrafts into a devastating barrage. [Capcom]
Go! Go! Break Steady is coming out on XBLA this week. Apparently it's a rhythm/puzzle game.
Also Jade Empire came out for download on Xbox Originals today.

I've heard that Siren: Blood Curse is supposed to come out on the PSN this week for $40. Any truth to that? The Siren series is easily the best traditional survival horror game series out there at the moment and this latest installment (a retelling of the first game) looks very sweet.

That's right. The 24th. I don't know what it's going to cost, but they said it's going to be three chapter packs, so you have to get all of them if you want the full thing. I assume they're each going to be the price of one PSN game.

I can't wait. I've always thought about getting into the series, but from what I played of the first one, it's incredibly obtuse and wrought with bad design decisions. This seems much more streamlined, and I've been looking forward to a new next-gen horror title that isn't Condemned 2. Since PS2 games look like wilted shit on my HDTV, it's difficult to play horror games on that console these days, I'm sad to say.

I don't know what to think about them redesigning the characters for an American audience, but we'll see. I'm looking forward to it, in any case.

So, whatcha buyin?

It's a good week for the NDS. FFIV? Yay! Izuna 2? Sweet. Everything else.. eh.. The SNK Arcade Classics looks like good fun on Wii, and Joint Strike on the PSN/XBLA looks great too. Won't know the Wiiware/VC until tomorrow.

So there's something...

Finale Fatnasty Whore DS will be mine.

This will be the last non VC/Wiiware game I buy before DQ IV DS.

Besides maybe both HM games. God damnit, another ruinous summer of Nintendo releases.

Hahah, I just read up on New Int. Track & Field.

So it's an update of the Konami arcade classic..

..I was surprised to find out that Sumo Digital developed it (Virtua Tennis), and that while it's essentially like Mario & Sonic at the Olympics, you can play as classic Konami characters like Simon Belmont and Solid Snake and Pyramid Head. It also has an online mode that mimmicks Xbox Live - there are friends lists that let you know when they're online, there are in-game tickers telling you when your friends best your records, there are "achievements" that award trophies for various tasks, there are online tournaments, online rankings, and worldwide online leaderboards.

I still can't be arsed to bother with such a game. But I just thought it was kind of funny that something that looked like typical shovelware actually received a pretty decent development effort behind it, by a pretty respectable developer.

I can't wait to buy Final Fantasy again!

    Which one?

All of them. Over and over.

I had completely forgotten FFIV DS was coming out soon until this weekend, when a friend reminded me. Holy shitballs, I love FFIV so much. FYI, if you buy at Circuit City this week you get a free $10 gift card, so that's where I'll be picking it up. I've almost doubled my handheld backlog but I don't care because I need this.

Looks like I'll be picking up two new games this week: the long awaited FF IV recreation and the SNK Arcade Classics for Wii. A friend of mine has the collection for her PS2, and we played the Jesus out of a few of those games, so I hope the emulation holds up well on the Wii. No reason it shouldn't, but that's never stopped it before. Kinda curious which version of KOF '94 it'll have.

Wow, that sucks, man. Glad to see you can finally relive the glory.

I've honestly lost count of the number of times I'd beaten the original; I had my best save file down to about 10 hours, IIRC. I think I beat the PSX FF Anthology version twice and the GBA version once, so this will be the fourth time I buy the game, and I will love it just as I did the first time. I've been trying not to read up much about it so as not to spoil things, but I've seen a few things and the new additions they've added to tweak the characters and gameplay a bit sound very intriguing.

I actually didn't do much with the bonus content in the GBA version, so its omission doesn't really bug me. It felt sacriligious to tackle the final dungeon with anyone who wasn't supposed to be in the Final Party.

    Well, it's pretty easy.

Got FF II at a yard sale in 1994.

Was given the japanese copies by a friend in a trade for his SFC.

PSX version came with CT, which at the time I didn't own on the SNES.

Advance and DS are new versions of the game, and I traded for the DS version.

So I only bought one copy of the game at full price. FF IV Advance.

Final Fantasy IV was pretty much the first quality turn based RPG on the Super Nintendo. In addition to drastically better visuals & music than previous NES-based games, it was also one of the first RPGs to have a story that focused on characters and not just plot. It also had a massive cast of playable characters for the time, all of which had their own unique exclusive abilities. And it marked the beginning of the ATB (Active Time Battle) system where instead of having rigid turns, characters would take turns based on their speed and enemies would act while the player was making their decisions.

In short, Final Fantasy 4 marked the beginning of the modern JRPG game style. The only other JRPGs at the time that really compared were Dragon Quest 4 (which was a fantastic game with excellent gameplay, well defined characters, and a good plot, but the NES was on its way out plus it was released a year later than FF4) and Phantasy Star 2 (which came out a couple of years earlier and was more of a transition between the old 8-bit style of JRPG and the modern style we see now).

RainbowDespair already said a lot of what I was going to say <3, but at least for me, it was arguably the first game to hit the West that was a "JRPG" in the sense of what we consider JRPGs today: Long, intricate storylines, various characters with different personalities, etc. The Dragon Warrior games and FF1 were excellent but really little more than dungeon crawlers with an emphasis on exploring and solving small vignettes. In FF4, what struck me was the characterization and the singular, overarching plot. The ATB system was also a wild departure from the turn-based affairs before it, so it felt a lot more organic and, well, active.

It's pretty much been said already, but I was blown away by FFIV (Final Fantasy 2, at the time) when I first played it. I was expecting something like Final Fantasy 1 with better graphics; what I got was a story where the characters in your party actually talked. To each other! I was totally expecting a bunch of mutes for some reason. Sure, the translation wasn't too great, but I didn't notice back then because I was an unobservant 14-year old.* I also wasn't prepared for how much better the game looked and sounded than I had expected.

*No offense to any 14-year olds here, I'm sure you're far more observant than I was back then.

Something that's definitely worth mentioning here is that this week (sometime today), GameTap is adding the original Fallout to its service. :D

Man I really hope the emulation on the Wii version of SNK Classics is better than the PS2 version. A lot of games on there were really messed up to totally unacceptable standards.
