It certainly does. If you've never played it before and this will be your first time experiencing it, it might feel a little cliché, but back in 1991 a lot of things it did was unheard of in the West. The game revolves around Cecil, leader of the Dark Knights, who begins the game carrying out tasks for the Empire of Baron and collecting crystals, but the whole situation doesn't feel right to him. A series of events puts into question Cecil's allegiance to Baron and the King's motives, and Cecil's thrown on the other side of the fence, so he begins to investigate why Baron is so interested in the crystals.
Along the way the game sets up large, rotating cast of characters that join and leave your party, but they come and go according to their own wills or the game's setup—you can't pick who you use at any point. All of the characters have definite personalities, and it's much more fleshed out than FF3 was. There are betrayals, lies, double-crossings, thefts, revivals, redemptions ... the whole nine. I don't think it's really as involved as X or XII were, but from what I hear the DS version really adds a lot to what was a very SNES-era plot.
Part of why I like the game is that it's one of the few FFs where you can't pick your party, and there's zero customization (although the DS version changes this a bit). This makes various sections of the game play differently, like when you have Cecil with three magic users and have to use magic more, as opposed to other parts where you're fighter-heavy and magic-light, or have a balanced setup. It avoids what I felt with FFVII or XII: all of the characters are the same, and the only difference is a portrait and a Limit Break.
The game is in stock at the Best Buy by my office, and I'm sorely tempted to get it, but I'll wait until tomorrow, where the game comes with a free $10 gift card (and everyone should go buy it there, free shit is awesome).

The voice acting really is good. I am surprised. Amazing what they can fit on that little cart....
I'm not very far in and I'm already finding this game to be a hundred times better than FF3DS, which I've had for 8 months and still have yet to complete because...I don't know. I can only play it in small doses before it pisses me off to no end. FF4 is so much better though.
I just picked it up and played through the first sort of sequence shiiiiiiit
As I said before I've only played a couple FFs (X and XII) and haven't even completed them but this is actually pretty engrossing for being on a DS.

This reminds me of my entry in a "Ruin Your Favorite Game" Photoshop contest here on the forums last year...
I'm sorry.
And I saved and go to bed.
I wake up, board the train, and Fire it up. I'm
I HAVE NO FUCKING CLUE WHAT TO DO. help?
But it reminded me of playing like shitty rpgs from my childhood.
Have you checked ALL the houses in the desert town?
SSB code- 0216-0856-6886 PM me so I can add you
It's not a desert town it's a desert with one cave... I can see the towns on my minimap I just can't go back. It's probably something simple but... frustratingly good.
There's a town in the desert—it's by the oasis.
Edit: Damn it.
Thankfully, the first one I ran into was the first battle after I had saved after 20 some battles.
edit: OH, and I'm loving how if you're not sure what you should be doing, just open your menu, and Cecil will get a thought bubble that should point you in the right direction.

Damn how did I miss that...
He just goes on about being emo and making that girl an orphan... 'If not by my hands, then by my deeds.'
Actually, wait... Is Rydia actually in your party? Or are you walking around solely as Cecil?

I'm at work and i can't explore further gahhh it's killing me.
You're either setting me up for the coolest Video Game moment ever or a dissapointment.
only 2... and a half... hours... to play...
Don't worry. You'll enjoy yourself.
I do hope so.
Does it bug anybody else that it's Cecil (like 'I did that Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs') instead of Cecil (as 'Seesil')
Man.. it took me a good 10 minutes to figure out what you were talking about.
Then I remember the swimming dancing chick, and felt numb in the face
