I've never played any version of FF4, so take this as you will, but do the Dragoon characters look...well, goofy as hell to anyone else? They clash so much with everything else it's like throwing Tingle in the middle of Gears of War.

I've gotta say, my import copy of FF4DS arrived today and damn it, it's awesome. Voice acting is great. Music arrangement is great. Game is great. :D.

Man... I was totally flipping a coin over bringing my DS to work with me and playing it in the bathroom, but I really want to hear the sound/voices so I didn't.

Where did you buy it? NOBODY has it till tommorow and I want to grab it before my commute in the morning.

    Gamestop.

We've got like 12 here in Albuquerque.

edit: Hell, 7 of them are within a 2 mile radius.

Does IV have a genuine story then?

What little I played of III kinda... just wasn't doing much for me. On the other hand XII (and X) both gripped me.

It certainly does. If you've never played it before and this will be your first time experiencing it, it might feel a little cliché, but back in 1991 a lot of things it did was unheard of in the West. The game revolves around Cecil, leader of the Dark Knights, who begins the game carrying out tasks for the Empire of Baron and collecting crystals, but the whole situation doesn't feel right to him. A series of events puts into question Cecil's allegiance to Baron and the King's motives, and Cecil's thrown on the other side of the fence, so he begins to investigate why Baron is so interested in the crystals.

Along the way the game sets up large, rotating cast of characters that join and leave your party, but they come and go according to their own wills or the game's setup—you can't pick who you use at any point. All of the characters have definite personalities, and it's much more fleshed out than FF3 was. There are betrayals, lies, double-crossings, thefts, revivals, redemptions ... the whole nine. I don't think it's really as involved as X or XII were, but from what I hear the DS version really adds a lot to what was a very SNES-era plot.

Part of why I like the game is that it's one of the few FFs where you can't pick your party, and there's zero customization (although the DS version changes this a bit). This makes various sections of the game play differently, like when you have Cecil with three magic users and have to use magic more, as opposed to other parts where you're fighter-heavy and magic-light, or have a balanced setup. It avoids what I felt with FFVII or XII: all of the characters are the same, and the only difference is a portrait and a Limit Break.

The game is in stock at the Best Buy by my office, and I'm sorely tempted to get it, but I'll wait until tomorrow, where the game comes with a free $10 gift card (and everyone should go buy it there, free shit is awesome).

Also, playing this I can totally see why they are doing DQ9 for DS. This game feels right. They could announce FF14 DS exclusive tomorrow and as long as it was like this I'd be a happy gamer.

I'm loving this 3d RPG trend with square right now. It makes me think about so many other possibility for remakes.

    Chrono Cross
    FFV
    FFVI
    Soul Blazer
    Illusion of Gaia
    Terranigma

Want FF5 and 6 remade like this immediately.

I just played through the intro sequence on the DS. It was fuckawesome. The voices aren't even annoying or shitty. I still want to stab out Baigan's eyes though, I hate that cocksucker.

The voice acting really is good. I am surprised. Amazing what they can fit on that little cart....

I'm not very far in and I'm already finding this game to be a hundred times better than FF3DS, which I've had for 8 months and still have yet to complete because...I don't know. I can only play it in small doses before it pisses me off to no end. FF4 is so much better though.

I just picked it up and played through the first sort of sequence shiiiiiiit

As I said before I've only played a couple FFs (X and XII) and haven't even completed them but this is actually pretty engrossing for being on a DS.

    rofl so spoilers here:
I'm at the part after the king makes you take the ring and it blows up the town

And I saved and go to bed.

I wake up, board the train, and Fire it up. I'm
in this desert area surrounded by mountains and I keep fucking dying from worms so I grind for like 40 minutes and find a cave and die (motherfuckers). I explore the cave a bit more but a guy is blocking my way and..

I HAVE NO FUCKING CLUE WHAT TO DO. help?

But it reminded me of playing like shitty rpgs from my childhood. <3<3<3

It's not a desert town it's a desert with one cave... I can see the towns on my minimap I just can't go back. It's probably something simple but... frustratingly good.

Also, for the record, Cecil and Rydia were both around level 18 when I finally ventured into that cave. When I was grinding still running from the fucking worms.

Thankfully, the first one I ran into was the first battle after I had saved after 20 some battles.

edit: OH, and I'm loving how if you're not sure what you should be doing, just open your menu, and Cecil will get a thought bubble that should point you in the right direction.

That's wierd. When I was walking around that desert, he was saying, "I need to find some shelter for this girl."

Actually, wait... Is Rydia actually in your party? Or are you walking around solely as Cecil?

Does it bug anybody else that it's Cecil (like 'I did that Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs') instead of Cecil (as 'Seesil')
