So far the script is pretty good, I do enjoy the way these boys communicate with each other from an entertainment P.O.V. Though I don't know a single Marine that is THAT insane or rotten-mouthed, although there are a few that come close.
These characterizations are probably true of all Marines.

well going from the descriptions I've read and the name of the show I assumed that it was going to be all puppy-dropping and Muslim-abusing, but I guess it's a bit more balanced than that
don't have cable, so gonna have to wait for the boxset
so how hilariously exaggerated is this show's depiction of soldiers
and how racist and homophobic are they
A bit if you ask me. Not hilariously exaggerated but enough that it casts them in a bad light in my opinion. Specifically the racism, it takes a bit of deployment time in the sandbox to really start disliking the "insurgents" for the way these guys act.

I think it's probably fairly accurate for a war zone.

What they portray as the war is far from accurate, but I guess every individuals time in the middle east is a matter of perspective.

no i meant the way they interact in the war zone. the increased racism and homophobia probably help them deal with the situation they're in etc., etc.
I'm pretty sure a show that portrayed soldiers as they actually are (read: mostly good people, some bad eggs) would be boring as shit
In my experience, it's closer to mostly horribly confused with bad eggs speckling the lot intermittently.
A lot of people just get dicked around in the armed forces, not a lot know why they actually joined. More don't really know what they're doing in life, unless they're lifers, and few really get what is going on in the world. The racism is definitely there. But it's mostly shrouded in Uncle Sam Approved "Hadji Hate". Not even hate, just not really being nice. The sort of "sub-human regard" you hear about. They don't really go on roof tops screaming hate, they just treat them sub-humanely. I'm not in any group that has direct contact with anyone other than contractors though. Maybe those guys are different? It's like a lot of pretentious asses who don't understand they've invaded someone else's country and so they get pissed at the guy in the DFAC for not speaking perfect english. It's really pretty silly.
Oh yeah, homophobia is pretty dominant though. It's fun to really fuck with them considering the number of gay jokes they like to make. I'm thoroughly convinced everyone in the military is gay and they're trying to convince themselves otherwise.
Note: I'm just Army Reserves, so this is mostly based off of my observations and interactions of the past 2.5-3 months I've been here.

The only service member that I've met so far from Iraq that was truly insane was my sister's friend. He's pretty gung-ho and has been hanging out at BAMC after getting three 7.62x39 to the leg.

It was also a book.
And each episode is fucking brilliant.
Frankly people should just post entire transcripts
Dear satan I wish for this or maybe some of this....oh and I'm a medium or a large.
and how racist and homophobic are they
also, it is scary how incompetent some of the superior officers are (see captain america and encino man)
don't have cable, so gonna have to wait for the boxset
Very racist and homophobic. The humor is sophomoric, but it is entertaining.

That doesn't count, because you can't not make something about WWII interesting
how do you think the history channel funds itself

They should have put a pink triangle on his shirt. I am sure it would go over the Republican Guards head.
also, i think the funniest part of the first episode was

Dear satan I wish for this or maybe some of this....oh and I'm a medium or a large.
My sister's marrying one, my cousin is one, their roomates come up every weekend.
All very well mannered young men who look like they could wreck some shit.
I've never asked, and I never will.

Why would they hoard batteries
