So I knew this girl as a friend for only about a week before I went off to China at the beginning of this month, but we kept in touch online and recently started having feelings for each other. I still have about 10 days before I go back on the third of August, and I want do something to make both of us really anticipate our first "real" date after I get back. Maybe some little thing every day that builds up to the final day? Or really anything to keep her interested in a boring guy like me in the absence of physical contact :P

Our options for communication are MSN (no webcam or voice chat), phone, and text messages.

How sappy are you willing to get, and how much are you willing to spend?

Feel free to let the answer to the latter be "0".

Oh, I could be pretty sappy :P
I'm willing to spend money (I'm buying her some souvenirs anyway) but I don't know her address, so it would be hard to have anything delivered (without making it somewhat obvious when I ask for her address).

You don't know her last name and general location? Look her up on the Yellow Pages website.

Unfortunately, I have no idea where to find an online phone book for Taiwan... but I will ask some friends.

Actually I'd say, you might not want to go all-out with this. Ramping up the anticipation for your first real date can really backfire... it puts the pressure on you both to have an awesome time, and if you get off to a slow start, it'll be pretty disappointing. What's wrong with just keeping up whatever ways you've been keeping in touch with her? Early dates can be awkward enough without pumping up the expectations. If you get back and things are going okay, you have fun going out with her a few times, then raise the bar.

These are great pieces of advice. Also they are tons of online services that deliver in the US. Try a custom made bear, flowers, hell I even hear they make Giant candy fortune cookies with custom messages for delivery. Give it a shot!

Nah, just tell her you want to send her a post card (actually send the post card). You may beat it back, but it'd still be nice. And you can send her flowers, too.

Do you have a webcam or a digital camera?

Write stuff on signs and take pictures of yourself with them and then send them to her. You could even do a countdown of days until you get back.

I peeled off a beer bottle label, wrote something on the inside of it, put it back on and then did a montage of me finding it, peeling it off, and showing her what it said. Stuff like that is pretty easy and very appreciated.

EDIT: Reread and saw you don't have a webcam. How about a digital camera?
