I don't know alot about this title but I'm definatly interested. Does anyone know if they are going the Monster Hunter route of local wifi only, or will there be full blown online play?
The Japanese demo for it is available and quite entertaining if it's a genre you like.
From what I can tell, they took out synthing (good thing to me), and put in more funny weapons (good thing also, I found a Mark-3 MAG that shot games at the enemies which knocked them into the air).
Definitely worth a shot to try it; I certainly hope they localize it.
I have been playing the demo and enjoying it quite a bit. Looks like this will be a day 1 purchase for me. Everyone should download the demo and try it out.
Wasn't this supposed to be one of those games that you hook your PSP up to the PS3 and it does the online tunneling for you? I know the "upgrade" of Monster Hunter 2 was supposed to have it, but I thought this did, too.

Is the demo on PSN or do I have to get it manually like in the old-den days?

It is on the PSN. It lets you level to 20 and your character transfers to the full version.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

Nearly all Ad-Hoc games work with Ad-Hoc Party, actually. MH Portable 2nd G and Phantasy Star Portable are just the two games that "officially" support it.
It's Phantasy Star Universe graphics, but they took out most of the annoying stuff. It's doesn't have the same "feel" as PSU. Also, you get a strafe button, which is a remarkable improvement over other PSO offerings. You still have to individually "level up" jobs, but this is a good thing (and I like the job swapping/leveling anyway... it's like Final Fantasy Tactics). I'm not a big fan of the Technics being attached to devices, but it works. The level caps are lower than in PSU, and it doesn't take 10 years to grind to endgame stats.
The demo is up at PSN. More importantly, the savegame from the demo will carry over to the actual game. I've leveled up my manz to 20 (the level cap in the demo). Technics max out at 11 or 10 depending on melee or ranged or magic. There's quite a bit of "humor" gear that drops in the demo, too.
Also, MASSIVE thread necromancy, although it was entirely appropriate in this case. I don't have a PS3, but I'm more than willing to play with PA folks on X-Link Kai once this comes out.
Actually it sounds excatly like PSU, but without the synthing :P The strafing, and job stuff both came from PSU. Not sure what other annoying stuff you're talking about from PSU.
As for the Ad-hoc party thing, I know it's not out yet, they pushed it back ages ago, and I haven't heard anything since. Last I heard one of the main reasons they were doing another release of Monster Hunter 2 (other than money) was Ad-Hoc party support. Never seen any indication that it would work with any ad-hoc games that didn't officially support it. Where did you read this?

Mostly the grinding. You don't have to grind 100 years to finally reach the pinnacle of your character. The XP curve for killing furry creatures has been toned down a lot, from what I'm seeing.

Everywhere that Ad-Hoc party is mentioned? You can download it from the Japanese PSN, and it's fully functional. There are quite a few other games that are supported according to Sony's claims, and many more were tested by PSP users.
It appears that most games that work with X-Link Kai also work with Ad-Hoc Party. Some titles work on Ad-Hoc Party that do not work with X-Link Kai. The games do not have to be "officially" supported to run on Ad-Hoc Party, although many have strange network features that make them buggy on Ad-Hoc Party. The official Sony support is just a CYA, apparently.
Neat, I just looked it up through Wikipedia and I stand thankfully corrected. Is it working with the US editions of these games? It's not terribly hard to pull stuff down from Japanese PSN, and it would be nice to get some real games going with it.

People were playing MHF2 (which is the US version of MHP2 and incidentally incompatible with both MHP2 and MHF2 EU versions) on it, so I'd say so.
Huh, I'm completely shocked this hasn't been talked about more here if the beta for Wifi Party Beta is still freely available on Japan's PSN. Good god, the fuel it would throw on the MH2 fire here and elsewhere would be huge.
Interestingly, most of the games being hosted on ad-hoc party seem to be all monster hunter, which is convenient for me. Back to the topic, I was hoping to pick this up, but with RE5 dropping in the same month I might have to settle for a rent. I played the demo and it hooked me but I gotta wonder if the community will support this game since the general consensus is that PSO was the pinnacle and PSU is generally considered garbage.

Having played a ton of both, and still playing PSU, I've got to say that Portable is a combination of the good from both PSU and PSO.
No synthing? Check.
Timed hits? Check.
Photon arts? Check.
Lots of weapons/joke weapons? Check.
AI to help you in missions? Check.
An actual story mode that PSO lacked? Check.
The only thing it feels like Portable is missing is online play. Obviously, if you have a PS3, I assume the ad-hoc party fixes that. I just gotta get 400 bucks so I can play a handheld machine online.

But its totally worth it, cause you can play Valkyria Chronicles. 8-) Actually lots of places are having $50 off sales on ps3s (some with games) so its likely there will be a $50 price drop soon.
Also there is always X-kai link.
Kinda sucks that ad-hoc party can't run in the background on the ps3. Can't use it while wife is watching a movie on it.

Well, I want to get one. I simply can't afford it, and nobody wanted to buy my DS and games on craigslist, so I gave up all hope. I applied for an Atlus contest for a 500$ giftcard and Gamestop PS3/Wii contest. Maybe you can pray for me.
So after you beat the first boss it seems all I have available to me is multiplayer. Is this right?
AFAIK, this is correct. This leads to not being able to pick up certain drops (since the Laser Cannons only drop in Single Player), but those drops are low level anyway. You can play the Multiplayer missions solo, of course, as many times as you want.
Well I ended up getting some good time with this over the weekend and I kinda love it. Pretty sure I am going to be picking it up this week. This is actually my first PSO which is odd, I have no idea why I never picked it up for the Dreamcast.
I've had them demo since it dropped in mid-February. Just recently got to try it out over Ad Hoc Party, and that went swimmingly. I have played it over Xlink Kai, but because of my OS (Vista) and the particular WiFi adapter I choose to act as a bridge between my PSP and PC, I'm only able to host matches not join them.
Darth, pick up Ad Hoc Party. You'll be able to play online fairly simply. If you need help with how to download it and set it up, respond here, I'll show you a guide that geestacks showed me.

It should work with Xlink Kai, yes.

Were you expecting an old-school style PS?
I assume you also know about the collection already. (looks like you've got it for the PS2 on your OH GOD PINK backloggery)
So much for that hope.
Delicious mapping.
Then maybe continue the partnership and make PS4 in 3D...
Drool.
PS2 on the other hand...
I wasn't expecting it until later this year.

It comes out next week! They pushed the released date ahead of their plan. Very surprising!

Inevitably it'll make me like the game, but in the end I don't want it if I can't play online.

Then I beat the story and went into my first Multi-player mission with just me and my buster sword.
Oh yeah. This is about as close as I'm getting to PSOP, and I'm digging it.
As I was typing this, I made it to the end of the mission. Yes. Yes, thank you, Sega.

The english lobby is J50, so make sure you go onto that one. If you have any problems, send a PM or a post in case it's not specific.
Also, fantastic news, I may be able to pick up a PS3 tomorrow, I am stoked
