NWCGE to be returning to to the retro game room, recommendations welcome!
My name is John Hancock and I am a member of Northwest Classic Game Enthusiats. Like many previous shows of PAX, we will be staffing and running a retro video game room this year once again, and would like to take some recommendations. We enjoy very much being a part of this excellent show, and are passionate about video games. As mentioned before, we are a group of hardcore collectors from the Seattle and Portland area that put on local video game connentions in the Portland and Seattle Area. I would like to start a thread to ask the forum what types of games that they would like to see playing in the retro video game room. In the past Nintendo has been very popular, and just wanted to get a feel on what would like to be seen this year. I have met several awsome gamers and collectors at previous shows and am always looking forward to seeing who strolls into our room each year. I would like to thank the team PAX for all that they have done for us setting up and orginizing one of the best video game shows in the US!
To answer further questions about who we are here are the links to our websites www.retrogamingexpo.com www.nwcge.org
Our newest retro video game expo will be held in Portland August 2nd and 3rd in Portland for all that are interested.

Listen to Spoiler Alert on KSUA 91.5FM at http://ksua.uaf.edu/ Every Tuesday 8 PM-10PM (9-11 PM Pacific). It's a Talk show about games, movies, comics, wrestling, TV and everything in between.
it is MUCH easier to transport consoles, so arcade cabs are probably out....also space is an issue. We would like to provide as much gaming with the room provided....multiplayer games such as Warlords always are great
keep the recommendations coming!

Ok, off the top of my head I have these that I would love to see and play again:
Sega Master System;
Bomberaid (like 1942)
Spy Vs Spy (This could be great 2 player fun too)
Out Run (its...Out Run)
Rambo (A shooter game that blew duck hunt out of the water)
Rampage (Destructive monsters = fun multiplayer)
A couple old Handhelds would rock, but they present a problem with keeping track of them.
Like the Virtual Boy could be intresting, Neo Geo, Game Gear, Wonder Swan, and Lynx.
Cabinets are out, but my personal classic favorite is Joust right now. It's so simple yet so deep and addictive. Maybe have Joust on another system? It's loses a little charm but still fun.
That sounds excellent! My only experience in retro gaming has been the 2 UK Expos that ran in 2004 and 2005. They were great fun and seeing all of the old ZX Spectrum, Amstrad and C64 stuff really brought back some memories.
Sadly my recommendations would generally be very European centric as that's my background. Nevertheless it would be nice to see some stuff like Oids on the Atari ST or maybe some ZX Spectrum stuff being emulated?
Kickle's Cubicle was a blast last year, be willing to bend the checkout rules for spontainious good times like that this year and I'll be happy. These games are so much better with a crowd than they are if you just check one out and play it by yourself. If I were you I'd try and come up with some activities that encourage groups of people hanging out.
We welcome all feedback that we have recieved on this post. Your thoughts and opinions on what we should have count in the room. While we cannot accomodate every request, we take every request seriously. Most of all, we want people to have fun in our retro game room. That is a #1 priority for us. We have learned alot from hosting retro rooms for PAX and Sakura-Con events. We are excited and grateful about getting a room of ANY size to fill up with retro goodness. We are just lucky for such as big event to give us the honor of being reto game nerds to share our toys with the public I have commented several times to my friends how laid back and appreciative all attendees are at these shows. All NWCGE staff members are avid collectors and gamers of different types. Each one of us usually has a different speciality or type of game we like to play. What we want to do is to cover the retro era that is a cross of both fun to play, multiplayer, and homage to the past. Nintendo 64 has been a huge hit in the past, due to probably having so many great multiplayer games. The new "combo systems"...the FC twin and retro duo have been helpful for being able to play both SNES and NES without a system selector...and one less plug in a power stip is a huge saver for us. We will try to accomodate any room we recieve with as much games and spead it out accross several systems....just keep the recommendations coming. Again, I appreciate all input! Most of all game on!

A Vectrex might be cool to see running at this if thats not too much to ask. I'm sure there are many people who will never of seen one before.
I was very happy to see the selection last year. I was VERY impressed with your atari collection (Read: Jealous) Playing snake rattle and roll was definitely fun. I should drag some one else for some 2 player co-op.
A Saturn for massive Bomberman games is a must. Dreamcast should have Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram if we got the twin sticks.
I've been piecing enough pieces together for that myself. I only have 1 twinstick currently. I would love to get another and run it like an arcade machine. Supposedly with 2 dreamcasts and a VS link cable you can run two displays at the same time.

If anyone there can find cables/controllers for the saturn I can donate mine for the event. or just the games.
I've got a bunch of games including cyber speedway, high velocity, NBA jam, Panzer Dragoon 2, bug!, clockwork knight, and my favorite, sega rally championship.
Plus a few bad ones (sonic 3d blast, i'm lookin' at you).
All the games worked fine last time I used em, and theyve been in boxes ever since.
I haven't tested the system in about 5 years but it's got a new battery so it should be OK.

Oh now the Vectrex and Saturn stuff are both excellent ideas! For the Saturn I would recommend having a copy of Outrun available to play as it was a best home version they ever made. Also Death Tank on the Saturn would be really special. 7 player multiplayer Death Tank would give people a peek into how Worms came into being!
Supposedly with 2 dreamcasts and a VS link cable you can run two displays at the same time.
No supposedly about it. I own two copies of VOOT, two DC's and a link cable and you can do 2p versus on separate monitors.
I'm planning to bring one of my DCs, VOOT, my twin stick & vs cable with me to PAX, but that may or may not happen depending on how much room I have left in my luggage (I decided to BYOC this year). If all else fails I will bring two copies of VOOT and the link cable and leave it in the retro room, so you guys better come through with the twin sticks. I also have TC3 adapters for Dreamcast that allow use of the Saturn twin sticks, if anyone has those.
As far as recommendations... *please* don't use NOAC-based NES consoles as that will deprive us all of Castlevania 3. And I think Mario Kart doesn't run on the knockoff SNES consoles, though I could be wrong on that.
Gotta come through with a Turbo Duo. *Not* a TG16, but a DUO. I can bring mine if you guys need one (easier to fit in my luggage than a damn DC lol). If you are planning to have one, I can bring my Arcade Card and every Arcade CD game released (Strider, Sapphire, the NeoGeo ports etc). I also have a bunch of Japanese Hu's like Ninja Gaiden, Nectaris and the like.
If no one has a 64DD or plans to come through with one, I can probably mail mine to a friend up there and bring it... but that's only if there's serious interest in it. It's a complete 64DD Collection, and I also have a Japanese F-Zero X cart so you can actually use the expansions disks.
I have tons of Japanese DC games, including most of the rare shmups if anyone's interested (though you could always run CDRs on the DC).
I can bring stuff if you guys are interested, or that's what I recommend bringing along. 4p SNES games would be good too, like Slam Masters, NBA Jam and the like. I have a 4p tap and I can bring if you guys want.
3DO must have Return Fire.
Thanks for running the retro room! I missed out on it last year but you better believe I won't this year
These requests are great, pending on the room size depends on the diversity of what we can provide. Again, we want to accomodate the most gamers as possible, so multiplayer games are top priority. For those who have not attended, there is usually way more people than TV systems and controllers. Our room is usually filled with as many chairs and TVs as they supply us. Thus, we want everyone to have a turn with some retro goodness. There is usually a halfhour time limit on the consoles, but there has never been an issue with that.
A couple of things to note:
The Retro Duo is a Nes clone that is near 100 percent compatible. For the purposes of the show, it is near perfect enough. It plays Castlevania III. Again it is a matter of space why we want to use them. Last Sakura Con the system was a big hit because when all 5 of our Nes systems were occupied(99% of the time), this provides options for players that want to play both Nes and super Nes games.
I am hesitant on anyone bringing rare items or systems from their own personal collection. If something was to happen, I wouldnt feel good about that, nor do I want to be responsible for it. We do however take donations. For the most part, our rare systems in the past did not nearly get alot of attention from the average attendee. Again space is an issue. If we have only 12 TV sets and 100 gamers, we have to present what the majority wants. The Vectrex was an exception, it got some. With hundreds of people coming into the room each day, It makes obscure things definately second choice.
The Sega Dreamcast at our last show was a good thing, I would love to have more Sega present(Saturn, Genesis as well). Again some of the issues will be getting enough games for those systems at the show, ones that people dont mind checking in and out and not afraid of getting scratched and dinged up a bit. These are things that must be thought about when bringing anything to the show. One of our dedicated members Nathan, has started a database of games and systems dedicated for these types of shows. They have been bought from members as well as donated for the cause of having people play and have fun. All these games are part of a database.

Are you trying to keep me from exploring the rest of PAX altogether? Based on your description, it sounds like I could spend three whole days captivated by the ghosts of games' past. Very cool ideas.
A healthy supply of Saturn content (over S-video if at all possible) would be lovely. Otherwise, I'm perfectly happy to withhold my personal suggestions and simply wait to see what I can learn about the rare and interesting items provided by you generous collectors.
Post Blue, your kind words are the reasons I LOVE doing these types of shows. You are prime example of how grateful people are just getting to relive a piece of their childhood though an old videogame, and I know that people will be happy with whatever we bring. On a side note...I love the Sega Saturn. To me, it is one of the most underreatted gems of reto collecting, and it had so many great games(many imports that blew my mind). If it was up to me, I would love to cover a huge game room, complete with a glassed musuem, arcades, and a game for everybody, including some crazy rare stuff. Until then, I will be more than giddy in any room provided, watching people freak out as they walk in and see a fully functional 2600, vectrex, Saturn, Dreamcast with a library of excellent games. To be a small part of this excellent show is an honor.
On another side note, here is link to my personal collection, again I am a sega and nintendo freak

Would it be possible to unearth a Turbo Grafx 16 and a copy of Keith Courage in Alpha Zones, or at the very least a copy of Keith and I can bring my TG16? It's been FOREVER since I've played it.
Failing a copy of Keith, some TG16 love of any kind would be awesome.

lol yosh I bought Keith Courage last year at PG. Didn't I show it to you? hahahaa

Also, I will bring the link cable and two VOOT CDRs. I have a method of securing the link cable to prevent any unauthorized "borrowing" of it. So someone come through with the twin sticks and an extra DC...

No you didn't :P You've been holding out on me! I feel so used, lol. That'll be awesome if you bring it this year.
More Atari please, the dreamcast is not near old enough to be retro. A 2600 with Combat is the kind of retro I am talking about, Kaboom and Warlords are also some of my 2600 favorites and great tournament games. Also the 400/800 series of computers were great with multiplayer games like Ballblazer and Track and Field, Jumpman was a true classic as well.
I know that there are different opinions on what the cutoff of retro gaming is. We all have different opinions, and we have based what we bring on what people speak about in person and on these forums. Needless to say that both Atari and Sega will be represented to and gamers of all ages older and newer will be happy. On a personal note, anything that is not current is fair game.

I would like to hear from this forum an answer to this question. If you had a choice to put 24 consoles in a retro room, what configuration would you use?. You may use multiples of the same console. Duo Consoles count as one. I would love to here from others what they would choose. Again, I would like to thank PAX for giving us the opportunity to field a retro game room

I'm sure the obvious request would be a 2600 with Warlords, Pitfall, Pacman, ect.
Do you have access to Arcade cabinets? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would be awesome. As would Tron and Tempest.
I WILL FUCKING THROW DOWN WARLORDS RIGHT NOW. Holy shit. That would be epic.
I agree with all of this man's suggestions, because he is obviously a genius. I also think Super NES systems are needed. Also, I'd like to throw down some Gauntlet on one system or another, even if it is Gauntlet Legends (the last good title in the franchise).

I don't imagine there'd be any call for an old TRS-80 Color Computer 2 with some games. I envied the kids with a Commodore 64. :-)
