The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
This thread is for rules, registration guidelines, updates, schedules, and questions regarding console tournaments ONLY. This thread will NOT cover console freeplay or any other events, including handheld, PC, tabletop, etc. Please note that all information is subject to change between now and the end of August.
Schedule Friday, August 29th
3:30pm~3:00am -- Super Smash Brothers Brawl (Wii)
Sunday, August 31st
12:00pm~5:00pm -- Halo 3 (X-Box 360)
Registration
Registration for ALL console tournaments begins on Friday, August 29th, right outside of the console tournament area.
Signups for Saturday and Sunday tournaments will be limited on Friday and Saturday. Unrestricted registration begins 2 hours before a specific event. See an individual tournament's section below for more information.
Each tournament has two lists: Main and Standby. Once the Main list has been filled up, you can only sign up on Standby. This means you can only enter the tournament if someone from the Main list fails to show up (odds of this happening are generally pretty good). Entrants from Standby are on a first-come, first-served basis.
If you do not have a complete team for a team tourney, you must enter on Standby. If you can subsequently find a team before the tournament starts AND there is room on the Main list, you will be moved into a guaranteed spot. Otherwise, you will be paired up with whoever else we choose from the Standby list.

FAQ:
This post will be used to answer popular questions.
Do you know anything about handheld events?
No, now get off my lawn.
When will rules for (insert game) be finished?
Soon, hopefully. As of this posting, Soul Calibur 4 isn't technically out yet but shouldn't take long to finalize. Smash and Halo 3 are close to being finished, and the rules for Guitar Hero 3 will be more or less the same as last year's GH2 rule set.
Where's Mario Kart?!?!?!?!?
It pains me to say this, but Mario Kart is out until further notice. After 4 outstanding years of Double Dash tournaments, we were ready to move on to Mario Kart Wii. Then we discovered it has no network play. The only options are split screen (4 players max) and wifi (uhhhhh no). In addition, we will only be using 16 Wiis in order to avoid synchronization issues. Finally, all multiplayer content must be unlocked in singleplayer AND you cannot transfer the game's data file between Wiis. Taking all of this into account, we decided it just wouldn't work. Hopefully some kind of compromise can be found next year.
#2) Will we have time to sign up for SSBB on Friday if we are toward the back of the entrance line? Or should we aim to be there pretty early to get int he front of the line to run to the console tourney sign up?

We try to be consistent when it comes to hardware, especially as systems die out. In addition, a lot of the GCs we used last year are no longer available.
Brawl registration will be open for several hours, but the main list will probably fill up in short order. If you're stuck near the back and can't get there n in time, you can still sign up on standby.
no rock band? seriously, fuck guitar hero, rock band owns guitar hero. that's it, i'm not going to pax now.
I decided against including Rock Band because the hardware situation would've been a disaster. That being said, we're still trying to include some kind of event outside of console tournament. I'm not involved so I can't make any promises, but keep an eye out.

the rock band drums can be broken apart and fit in a fairly small bag since all the pieces come apart. they fit in a smaller bag than my guitar does.

we could have rock band with just the drums, have a drummers only tourney or something :P
maybe some things can be setup in the freeplay rooms, but that depends on what's there
Although 4 person split screen for Mario Kart is annoying, I'd rather have that than no MK tourney. And wasn't there some sort of workaround for getting Brawl save files onto all the Wiis? Someone brought it up... somewhere. Wouldn't that method work with Mario Kart?
I think the hardware problem is that the hardware just isn't tough enough. Not to mention the difficulty in arranging teams, although given the inclusion of Halo I'm getting that's not such a big thing.

My Visa card got stolen the other day. Now it's everywhere I want to be.

(Yeah any Mario Kart is better then none )
But yes somebody did bring up something about a workaround for transferring Brawl saves, I'll have to test it sometime. However when it comes to MK: Wii saves, I'm not sure, since the save files link to Mii's and if the Mii is deleted, so is the save, so I doubt MK saves can transfer.
EDIT:
Is it possible yet to confirm if we are able to choose our play/control style for Brawl, or will that come with the rules? (i.e. wii-mote, GC controller, classic controller, etc)

At this team, I plan on allowing players to use whichever controller they prefer.
I just want to know the starting weapon, so I can figure out if I want to waste my time practicing for it or not.
It'll probably be default weapon settings, with some tweaks based on popular tournament rule sets. If you have any recommendations, please post a link.
Zig, you are my God, and as my God, I have a request: Please for the love of you, bring back Double Dash!!
I'm sure I'm not alone when I say it was the most fun tournament at PAX -- all four years. It'd be a shame, A SHAME, to drop it. And I'm sure if you put out a notice, you'll be able to track down enough GameCubes (hell, I can provide 5+ myself). Double Dash is pretty much the reason I come to PAX -- make it happen!
Love you God.
PS: As the 2nd place champion three years running (four for my friend), I NEED my 1st place! I've invested too much time not to get another shot!

My sentiment is similar to this. It's what I've looked forward to most at PAX, although I think it's really more reasonable to do a MKWii instead of MKDD.
I wonder... if it's feasible that I organize an unofficial tournament? That's how much I want to play MKWii with you guys. I pretty much only need a bit of space and time in one of the console freeplay rooms... Is this possible? Do you guys have interest in this? Cuz if so, I'll do it.
Duderdude, I've come in 3rd or 4th three years running in MKDD. YOU ARE THE ENEMY.

I'll talk to Kenneth and see what's available in Console Freeplay.
real at I wanna say great job to the staff at PAX good job getting the wheels really turning in the last 48 hours you have announced the expo hall booths (things) and the tournements! You guys are reminding me that pax is just weeks away and I cannot wait, there seems like this year is about to hella rock (just don't follow e3, yes I am talking to you nintendo!)
As far as people complaining, yeah I understand (kinda) but really look at the pre pax tournments join up there!
As far as freeplay is going do they do tournments as well because last year was the only year I havedobe tournments and I don't go to the big ones (besides gears) I skipped mario kart, gh ii, and smash bros because I didn't want to waste time so does freeplay also do tournements because I remeber being in like 3 last year and still had fun!
And again, great job staff, this pax is about to be ephick!
You guys are doing your everything to make these tournaments cool and fun and what not. I can dig that. However I'm just a little disappointed in what is essentially the same listing of tournaments as last year. Sure it was Melee instead of Brawl, and Halo 2 instead of 3. But still where's some variety?
I know it will all amount to moot what I'll say... but I didn't enter any tournaments last year, and it looks like I'll have to repeat that. I don't want too... but I don't really play any of those.

Sadly, it's another weird "transition" year. By now I was hoping we'd have more fun, new tournament games compared to last year, but this console generation has been fairly disappointing in that regard.

Transporting them isn't the problem. Console Tournament just isn't the right venue for a large-scale Rock Band competition.
No split screen, so any tournament would take forever unless we set an obscenely low team cap.
At this team, I plan on allowing players to use whichever controller they prefer.
It'll probably be default weapon settings, with some tweaks based on popular tournament rule sets. If you have any recommendations, please post a link.
I would like to know, is it MLG Rule sets? Or standard team slayer?
What Maps are used?
etc

This is the standard for Tournament Halo
As said above:
No split-screen=too much time or seriously short games. It can't work with the time and space restrictions.
it was already stated why
there is no splitscreen
look up a couple of posts
