Horror movies?

I need a compendium of really really good, and preferably recent horror movies.
The Saw series is off limits, as is anything involving underwater/sharks.

Newer is better, but if its quality transcends time go ahead and let me know.

I already own;
The Ruins,
Vacancy,
1408,
Diary of the Dead,
28 Days Later,
28 Weeks Later,
and Descent.

Thanks!

I found Devil's Rejects to be so, so good. House of 1000 Corpses was better, but it's sequel just made me feel right/wrong.

28 weeks later wasn't up to snuff as 28 days later...

The ONLY horror movie that had me really on edge in recent memory was 30 days of Night.

Cabin Fever was okay, but not great.

Stay Alive was actually kind of funny, IMO. Especially if you want to see Frankie Muniz doing a horror film, and one where they don't seem to know the first things about video games.

13 Ghosts and House on Haunted Hill were kind of amusing.

    That movie was fantastic.

Dawn of the Dead (remake and/or original) is a great zombie flick. That's... all I can think of that you don't own other than 30 Days of Night.

Best horror movie I've ever seen, hands down, is the Orphanage. Only catch is it's in Spanish (with English subtitles, or French dubbing with English subtitles if you prefer)

A great sleeper horror film is Session 9. Very good ghost story, reminiscent of The Shining. I also liked Dagon, mostly because I <3 HPLovecraft and this was an acceptable adaptation.

If you're only looking for recent horror movies, you're missing out on some good stuff.

I would also say that Pan's Labyrinth could be considered a very good horror movie. Fantasy horror, but horror none the less.

The Mist had a really crappy and unsatisfying ending though. I think it would have been much better if they kept the original ending from the story.

    Dog Soldiers.

It's by the same director as "The Descent" (it was actually his breakthrough film into the mainstream), and features a group of British squaddies on a training mission up in the Scottish highlands who get attacked by werewolves.

    Pure cheesy awesome.

gah... the ending was soul-crushing. I have no clue how that got past studio execs and test audiences... Shindler's List had a happier ending then the Mist..

Also, as someone here already mentioned, Slither is an awesome horror movie.

I actually rather enjoyed the Ring as well... I've heard good things about the original Eye (as opposed to the remake with Jessica Alba, which isn't totally atrocious but is really just a drama that has a few ghosts in it and isn't even close to scary) and the original Shutter

If you liked 1408, look into the 3 part miniseries The Lost Room. It's not a horror, but it's a really cool story that for whatever reason, I find similar enough to 1408 that I figure anyone who liked one would like the other.

They Wait was pretty nifty. Not really scary either but had some neat background story stuff in it.

oh.. slither is a great movie... but when you sit down and try and compile a list of horror movies that really scared you.. the result is a VERY short list.

Some movies try to hard, but you can't get past cheesy make.up or effects.

I did see a commercial for 30 days of night 2 : (electric boogaloo ?) .. I refuse to watch on principal.

In the Mouth of Madness is an amazing movie; still one of my favorite horror films.

    I'll throw some more in:

    -Event Horizon
    -Dead Alive
    -Bad Taste
    -From Beyond

The last 3 are a little older, but they're still outstanding.

The earlier Korean/Japanese horror flicks were incredible. Ringu 1 and Ringu 2 were great, as was Ju-On: The Grudge. The Eye was creepy but not scary. A Tale of Two Sisters was mind-bending and fantastic.

I also recommend Session 9 as a brilliant modern example of psychological horror.

How are people recommending In The Mouth of Madness? That was atrocious.

    Audition
    Jacob's Ladder
FEAST [unrated or don't bother :p]
    Hatchet
    13 Ghosts
House on Haunted Hill [don't bother with the sequel]
Hills Have Eyes [original or remake...both are good]
Ichi the Killer [miike is awesome]
The Reanimator [classic lovecraft style story...bit old but still a goodie]
Teeth [if you hate your penis]

Given enough time I could make a huge list but those should be great starting points. Definatly check out Jacob's Ladder. It still has an influence on media to this date and just love it. FEAST and Hatchet are just good horror in general. Good gory fun

Two of my favourite horror movies are Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn, and Evil Dead 3: Army of Darkness.

They're not very scary (unless you're young), but they are cult classics for a reason...

But basically any George Romero movie is a winner, the modern Dawn of the Dead is awesome.

Are the Saw movies off limit because you will be watching these with a girlfriend? In that case Shaun of the Dead can't be beat, it's a romantic comedy zombie horror flick...
