i'm not 100% i'm goin to PAX this year yet (would be the first year i don't go), but if i do end up goin', i'm also gonna try to organize maybe a PA tf2 team, depending on who shows
this would be srs business though, because the prize for being #1 in most tournaments is something like $150 a head (they pay you in funny plastic tickets with PA characters on them, i took 3rd in an HL2: DM tournie last year)
so if anybody wants to play fo serious, send them my way.

Naw, it's be serious play unless it became obvious we were going to lose a round. Then they would know the wrath of silliness.
However if we're going to be using CEVO rules or something (you know, *not* playing actual TF2) I wouldn't be interested in organizing it.

"MEDIC!"
I wish they would have taken this one from TFC: "EXCUSE ME, I'M IN NEED OF MEDICAL ATTENTION!"
Sometimes I can't help but say that over voice chat. Usually will get a chuckle or two.
Stock TF2 is silly pub fun, but turrible for competition. Crits all over the place with an army of Ubercharging medics is pretty random and unskilled, and the whole point of a tournament is to determine the best team.
It's been like pulling teeth to get *any* configurable settings from Valve, who for some reason think because they made the game, they are good at it and that it should only be played one way: their way. Sure, they beat a few all-newbie developer teams, but I'm sure I could handily beat a newborn in a knife fight.
TF2 is a very newbie friendly game, even with the CEVO ruleset. It's still goofy fun that doesn't place a heavy emphasis on skill, but it's far less random with class limits and crits disabled. CEVO rules please.
I played in that tournament and I can assure you not every team was all-newbie. There were some teams with players as good as Valves. There just wasn't a whole team with as much experience.
I know that a couple of the teams that played have some decently skilled players (I play on the dev pub), but in TF2 individual skill is almost irrelevant (the reason why most competitive players and teams ignore the game) and one or two good players will lose to a zerg of six people who aren't good shots but stay attached to four other teammates at all times.
Now if Valve would enter a team, so we could test the "team zerg vs. team skill" theory, that'd be swell. If it's no crits, so they might be too scared to sign up.
Having six to a side, no crits, and class limits makes it a completely different game that I don't enjoy at all.

I heartily agree.

Perhaps a TF2 thread should be made outside of this one, as to keep this thread clean and continue the discussion. However, I disagree that unskilled players can zerg and beat a skilled team. A skilled team is still going to win, even with crits. You do know that you have a higher chance to crit if you are doing better, right?
Fair enough, I have no problem with talking about it here.
Fall, what current games do you think should get a tournament spot in front of TF2?
That won't matter. You're a liar regardless.
I don't think fallout is directly against TF2 as a tournament or that it doesn't warrent a spot as a tournament. I'm pretty sure he thinks the game has a lot of potential, but he's disgruntled with some of the game's designers choices competition-wise.
Expect rules to follow a competitive rule-set with CEVO/CAL/TWL/WCG setting the precedent for rules. That doesn't mean we won't deviate, but it's where we start.
I would be so fucking annoyed to play in a UT2k4 tournament and not have competitive settings with UTComp OR if I was in a CTF tournament with the translocator turned off.
On the opposite side, I seriously doubt anyone that doesn't play the game ALOT knows enough to distinguish between competitive settings and UTComp or what a translocator is and how to use it adeptly. They're oblivious to the nuisances of the game. They can't appreciate what those things are to fully enjoy the game.
Let me use a better analogy:
The first time you go skiing, it SUCKS balls. You fall a lot, you land on your butt, and you get snow in your pants.
After you take a some lessons: you get better at it and are able to enjoy the activity to its fullest. You can ski down a run, maybe do some tricks.
We want people that are taking their first lesson to have fun and enjoy the tournaments, but we're not designing the tournaments for them (read: this isn't the bunny hill). We're designing the tournaments for people that have had some lessons and can handle the course with some deft.
Read: Pro, sponsored World in Conflict teams? Ok that was low... but 4 serious, I always enjoyed the PAX tournaments because I always felt they were just a tad under hardcore, which made them a lot more fun. In any case, I never argued against a ruleset for TF2... I've just never used a different ruleset. Bring it on, I'll practice on it and see what I can do.
But I'm not an official organizer and probably shouldn't be saying such philosophically-aligning statements.
