Here's the report from ShackNews:
"Microsoft has informed Shacknews that Xbox Live Silver members will only have free multiplayer access to select cross-platform titles--Universe at War, Shadowrun and Lost Planet: Colonies Edition--until the next system update arrives this fall.
"For a limited time, we are offering free online multiplayer on Xbox 360/Games for Windows titles that offer LIVE cross platform play," a representative explained. "This promotion won't last, so we encourage everyone to take advantage of it while they can."
The representative concluded that, "When the new Xbox experience launches this fall all multiplayer gaming on Xbox 360 will be for Gold members only." "
Shadowrun is a fantastic team based FPS that distinguishes itself from other FPS games in that each player can greatly customize his character to suit his or her playing style with a variety of spells & high tech gadgets/implants. It did poorly the first time partially because old time Shadowrun fans were disappointed that the game didn't bear much resemblance to the pen & paper RPG, but mostly because it was a $60 game with little in the way of a 1-player content & not a lot of different modes. Now that it's dirt cheap everywhere and online multiplayer is free (at least for a couple of months), that's not really a problem. I've been having a blast with the game ever since I got it a few days ago from goozex and I've just been messing around versus bots; I'm really excited to get some online games later tonight when I have the chance.
Let's talk customization options!
First you have your character races. 4 to choose from. They are:
Human - All around decent. Max MP doesn't drop from equipping tech.
Troll - Slow & big. No speed penalty from weapons. When damaged, it uses MP to create spikes all over its skin which forms a natural armor making them hard to kill.
Elf - Fast, but highest speed penalty from heavy weapons. Uses MP to regenerate lost health over time. Good hit & run race.
Dwarf - Smallest class. Able to take a headshot and live. Slow MP regen rate, however they have the ability to drain MP from nearby characters (both allies & enemies) and summons.
Now, let's talk about spells. Spells can be purchased in between rounds with the money that you earn (the better you played that round, the more money you get). All races can equip any spells or techs, but everyone's limited to 3 slots on the controller to map them for quick use. The spells are as follows:
Tree of Life - Creates a giant tree that heals everyone nearby.
Strangle - Creates a cluster of diamonds on the ground that trap nearby characters.
Smoke - Turn into smoke. Can't be hurt by bullets or detected by Enhanced Vision or Smart Link.
Gust - Blows a strong burst of wind in the target direction, useful for knocking players off ledges or hurting smoked characters.
Teleport - Teleport a short distance in the direction that you're moving. Can be used to go through walls.
Summon - Summon a monster to either defend an area or chase after an enemy.
Now, let's talk tech. Each tech reduces some of your max essence (i.e. MP) while equipped unless you're human.
Glider - Let's you jump higher & float down gradually.
Enhanced Vision - Let's you detect enemies, even through walls.
Antimatter Generator - Destroys essence nearby.
Wired Reflexes - Increased speed + even more increased speed temporarily at the cost of health. Can block bullets with a katana if equipped.
Then you have your pretty standard FPS weapons: pistol, shotgun, rifle, sniper rifle, chain gun, rocket launcher, katana...okay, the katana is a little out of the ordinary. Unlike spells & tech, weapons that you purchase are lost and can be stolen if you're killed in a round so you'll want to be careful with spending too much money on them.
And there you have it. In any case, with the game only being $15 at GameStop or 300 points at Goozex and with free multiplayer until the Fall update, everyone should grab a cheap copy and get some games on! From what I've heard there's a small but active community for the game already so it shouldn't be too hard to find games.
Oh and my Live tag is the same as my Penny Arcade username so if you see a RainbowDespair online, you'll know it's me.

oh it says that, whoops
I betcha if it were a user made mod for HL2 they would have just eaten the thing up too.
A horrible horrible bastardization. If they didn't brand it as Shadowrun, none of this would have happened.
To bad the game tanked, as we'll never see some of the promised support.
I never asked for this!
Though its still far removed from the source material, except for the little tiny bit of superfluous "lore" they threw in during the install.
I'd play, but I traded my copy in when the player base died.
Seriously, I played it at like 4AM one day and there were more than a few full games going.
Human + Shotty + Enhanced Vision + Smoke/Tree = You're fucked.
I hear the game has degenerated to Ninja Orcs.
1 - The game is really well balanced. Although I saw some things more often than others (Resurrect is one of those essential skills that just about everyone had; luckily, it's the kind of thing that can be useful even if it's not mapped to one of your main buttons), I saw pretty much every tech, spell, and race used throughout the evening.
2 - I'm really not very good at this game yet.
Still despite my lack of skill, I had a lot of fun and definitely plan on playing again later this week.

A lot of it boils down to proper weapon/tech/magic use. You'll start noticing little things about each build that has a weakness versus a positive aspect.
Like, the rifle. You can't hit shit with it up close, but it will take down a orc quicker than almost anything else if they're at medium to long distance. Very long range, though, it just depends on how well you can shoot them.
An elf with a sword + teleport is incredibly dangerous as well. Hell, swords in general if you know how to use them.
They just love treating you console gamers like absolute shit don't they?
i'ma pick you up when im'a pick up soul calibur.

How's the community looking?
Wha?
And I'll be attempting to find this/pick it up this weekend. I have a few friends on my list that play it pretty regularly who say (and they may just be trying to get me to pick it up :P ) that it has a pretty good, steady userbase of players going still, and this was before it became free for silver. So hopefully they're right.
Anyone have the full version and can comment on what the community is like?
I may get this cheap anyways, as I recall the bots in it being fairly decent.
EDIT: Didnt see Aoi's comments about the community.
I seem to recall teleport + glider making you a crazy mobile.

My set up was usually an Elf with Teleport, Enhanced Vision, and Anti-matter Generators (for those pesky trolls). For weapons I usually used the SMG and Sniper Rifle. Fuck the sword (I'm terrible with it).

Played the demo of this one - eh... seemed like a Counter Strike with elfs. Granted, I didn't like Counter Strike. Maybe worth a rental if you folks endorse it.
Does Counterstrike let you teleport through walls or leap a hundred feet in the air? Uhhhh, without cheating, that is.

Lern 2 redd, nubsauce.
pft.... No fucking way. Now to go find a used copy somewhere.

I was playing this a month or so ago for a couple of weeks. There are still enough games going on when I was playing.
The community seemed pretty cool. No one shouting expletives or other insanity when things don’t go their way.
I love the communication system. All 3D games should copy it. Im thinking of Splinter Cell specifically. Its great that u tap the Dpad to send a team wide message, and they see a little icon on their HUD pointing to the event.
Plus all the powers/ tech are pretty awesome. My gamertag is in my sig, send me a friend request. I’ll play.
XBL/PSN/Steam: APZonerunner
They nearly did; it's called Dystopia. The big difference is Dystopia has no magic, so it appeals to the Gibson/Stephenson 'ers a bit more who were pissed that Shadowrun had elves.
I didn't buy the game because of it's deviation from the Shadowrun universe, but that was simply a bargaining point when I was in college and had no money to spend on games. Maybe I'll nab this on the cheap sometime.
