For almost all of these games you will have to run DOSBox. Learn it, use it, live it. Most of them didn't even work in XP.
Ancients 1: Deathwatch
Ancients 2: Approaching Evil
Bard's Tale
Bard's Tale 2: The Destiny Knight
Bard's Tale 3: Thief of Fate
Amulets & Armor
Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos
Eye of the Beholder
Eye of the Beholder 2
Dungeon Hack
Ok, so I haven't played most of these. Ancients 1 & 2 are much like Might and Magic and are fun if you like this sort of game. Dungeon Hack is fantastic, very well put together, lots of equipment types. It tries to be more action-y, though, don't know if you'll like that. But it is great.
This is the best first person RPG in the world, though:
Shining in the Darkness
It oozes style and is very straightforward and fun. You can get it for Genesis or on the Wii Virtual Console (easiest and cheapest way). Well worth it.
Wizardry 8 is very expensive on the used market, just an FYI. But when I first tried it, that's what made me think back 10 years ago to the old Might and Magic games. I loved those things until I discovered Fallout, Baldur's Gate, and Diablo.

Probably depends on where you live, I guess. I bought mine for about 12$ new with manual, which isn't 'very expensive'. I just checked the uk Amazon and they have it at 4£ used and 7£ new.
I wouldn't have recommended it if I thought it was impossible to find/pay for.

Hope the OP lives out of the US then, where it's $40-60 at the usual places like Half and Amazon. Thirty is about my limit for an oldgame.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
The best first person team RPG is a game in the Might and Magic series.
Might and Magic IV and V: World of Xeen.
whenever I get a new game in a series I always install the previous games just in case there is an easter egg that looks for the old games and unlocks something new. I do this because of Xeen.
Is Pool of Radiance abandonware? Is there a patched version of the remake worth playing?
edit: Is there a PoR module for NWN or NWN2?
That's one of the best RPG's ever.
It's up to you to decide. I went ahead and added it to the backlog because I haven't played a corridor RPG like that in 15 years, and probably never finished one. I plan to just do a tour with a walkthrough and GIF maps, no map-making nonsense or anything. Gave that up a long time ago after Kings Quest V.

Pool of Radiance was awesome, and at the time was probably the biggest damn game I had ever seen. The only thing that stood in the way of absolute greatness was that the battles took so damn long. At first the tactical style battles were AWESOME, but after a while they became a chore.

Coming off games like the Phantasy Star series and being a big fan of overworld exploration, I realy didn't think I'd like a "mere" dungeon crawl ... but I'll be damned if I didn't really, really like this game. Fun dungeon to explore, lots of style, just enough depth to feel like it had meat yet just light enough to make it easy to play. Great stuff.
Might and Magic was my first ever RPG. I used to love making characters drunk.
I think I still have the Completion Certificate! Man I wish my 360 printed one of those out when I got 1000/1000 points.
Could you please spoil the ending of Might and Magic for me? I played the game when I was about 7 years old and could never get very far, but I always wanted to know what the secret of the inner sanctum actually was.
I guess I'll have to be a bit more specific. Unfortunately I don't have an Amiga and Bard's tale probably wouldn't be easy to find.
I can play games on PC (vista), Wii, SNES, NES, Genesis, and DS or possibly some emulator.
I'd highly recommend not tossing around the "E" word in these forums...
Depends on the context. There are a ton of games which have been released as freeware for older systems like the C64 or Amiga for example that you would need an emulator to run.
I love Might & Magic for the Genesis. I'm taking notes on the stuff recommended

It's basically some really-high tech place in which Sheltem lies fucking shit up. Corak then ruins his shit and sends him packing.
The storylines of Might and Magic I-V are all tied together by Sheltem and Corak. Sheltem fucking shit up and Corak fucking Sheltem's shit up. In Darkside of Xeen, Corak finally says "Enough of this stupid shit. I'm going down and I'm taking you with me." and self destructs, taking both of them into the void.
It's pretty easy nowadays to find a (legal) copy of a might and magic compilation (I think there is a 1-9 box) on the cheap.
And World of Xeen works perfect in Dosbox. On my compilation disc it also included Swords of Xeen, which is another full-sized might and magic game on the same scale of Worlds written in the same engine.
Edit: Ports of Might and Magic 2 and 3 were released for the genesis (and SNES). While they are good ports they both (but especially 3) were really pushing the Genesis hardware and so are often slow or laggy.
Get a compilation of the PC versions and run em in Dosbox for the same game but a better play experience.
Whenever I see screenshots from Might & Magic, Wizardry, or Eye of the Beholder, I get this big, goofy grin. These were formative games in my childhood. I'd go repurchase the Might & Magic series, and pick up the Wizardry series while I was at it, but I no longer trust Amazon marketplace.
UncleSporky I really appreciate your great list. Also your Shining in the Darkness recommendation. Is excellent. It's still not exactly what I'm looking for, but the game is really fun.
It was a bit frustrating until I started making maps.
You'll have people in this thread telling you to get Etrian Odyssey for the DS. Ignore them.
Why do you recommend against Etrian Odyssey?
Beats me, because it really is right up there with the classics. Customizable characters, big mazes, tough grinding difficulty. Built-in map drawing system for your convenience. Really highly recommended.
By the way, how far are you in Shining in the Darkness? It gets way better once you get your other two party members. Gotta get to the center of the first map for that.

Beats me too. I played and adored games like these back on the Apple IIE, especially the Bard's Tales series. (To say nothing of Wasteland, which is not swords and sorcery like the rest of these but is a) similar in gameplay, and b) absolutely outstanding.)
I lost last summer with my head down over my DS recapturing that feeling with Etrian Odyssey 1, and this summer is flying by obsessing over my carefully drawn maps and roster of characters with Etrian Odyssey 2.

Isn't EO linear? Like, Wizardry 1-5/Bard's Tale 1 linear? At least, I got that impression after playing it for an hour once.
Wizardry 7 was mentioned here, where the OP said he would put it on the back burner due to it being the end of a trilogy. It's actually the middle of the trilogy, but in any case I wouldn't hesitate to recommend jumping in there. W7 is probably what I would consider the high point of the genre in terms of plot, exploration, etc.; W8 is fun, too, but not quite as good, in my opinion, and W6 somewhat lower than that.

Yeah, it's put together well and really blew me away at the time. Actual cartoon art, during the time of tiny Sonic sprites and such.

Phantasy Star 2 (genesis)
Betrayal at Krondor (dosbox/pc)
Betrayal in Antara (dosbox/pc)
And they said yes.
Every game UncleSporky listed that I've played rocked. The ones I have not played? I now want to play them after seeing those screenshots!
Never did finish that game.
I wish I still had mine. This was one of the first RPGs I ever actually finished on my C64.
I'd highly recommend not tossing around the "E" word in these forums...
Realms Of Arkania series (Blade Of Destiny ,Star Trail, Shadows Over Riva)
A lot of micro management, but some of the best RPGs I've ever played.
Dungeon Master. Classic.
I'd say that's your computer's fault.
Yeah. That's your compy's fault. I NEVER had it crash.
Wait, no. I take that back. It crashed when I decided to edit the game when it was running via the UGE.
That corrupted my save-file too. But I honestly deserved it.

BTW, Goozex has them for 100 points (=$6) each:
http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/itemdetail.asp?item=16125 (one copy left)
http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/itemdetail.asp?item=24277 (three copies left)
http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/itemdetail.asp?item=16079 (one copy left)
You get 100 points just for signing up. You see where I'm going with this? (In general, Goozex is good for cheap older PC games.)

Although when I played it, it was black and white and on a mac...:(
