I love anime, in fact, I love it so much that I've pretty much run out of good anime to watch. At least, good anime that I know about. That's were you, my faithful PA audience, come in. What anime is good to watch? Preferably shorter series, I am honestly getting tired of all of this 300 episode-nothing-happens crap with shows like Naruto.
I've Seen and enjoyed the following:
Slayers (Original/Next/Tri/And Revolution [still waiting for the other 21...with great anticipation])
Naruto (Why the hell do I keep hoping something will happen with this?)
Bleach (how can they cut from an actual story arc to filler in mid arc!?)
Trigun
Cowboy Beebop
Samurai Champloo
Rurouni Kenshin
Elfen Lied
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Zero No Tsukaima
FLCL
Escaflowne
Love Hina
Fumufu
Ranma 1/2 (never saw the full thing, but most of it.)
I can't think of anything else...Any shows that i'm missing?

FLCL is good for the story & animation, too. Just don't take it seriously -- it's not a deep anime like "Now And Then."

Of course, "Now and Then, Here and There" is very good, too, if slightly dated and depressing.

You should also see Haibane Renmei.

Isn't there a D&D thread about anime that stays pretty current? You may want to ask there for a wider range of results. There's tons of anime.

You have to watch Gurren Lagann. It is good for your soul.

Also you don't appear to have seen Fullmetal Alchemist. You should watch that also.

    Watch:
-Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (great comedy/quasi-mech anime)
-Baccano! (great "mystery" anime...I guess thats how to describe it)
-Rosario to Vampire (human attends a school for monsters, very good)
-Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (horror/mystery anime)
-Serial Experiments: Lain (a show that will make your brain explode...in a good way)
-BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad (great show about music, with equally great music)

Also, someone mentioned Fullmetal Alchemist and I whole heartedly support that, it's one of my favorite shows period, not just favorite anime series. Baccono! is like hte spiritual successor to Cowboy Bebop in my eyes and one of my favourite series. Black Lagoon is another anime I'd put up there with Cowboy Bebop for style, animation and story. Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi is good if you like insane slice of life style stuff. Based on what you are viewing and liking, you'd probably enjoy Code Geass, too.

No mention of Azumanga Daioh or Great Teacher Onizuka? For shame.

Also, list lacks shoujo/josei anime. To undo this heinous act, watch Fruits Basket, Honey & Clover, Ouran High School Host Club, NANA and Nodame Cantabile. In that order.

Fruits Basket, Wolf's Rain and Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni [and the second series which is Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni Kai] are all very good and relatively short. Higurashi is great, it can be very confusing but a lot of the second series explains the first. It's also completely insanely awesome.
Also, if you like violence in anime try Elfen Lied. That's short and self-contained as well.

    Princess Tutu.

    Seriously.

....It's actually a lot better than the girly name implies. Basically a series with an interesting take on old fairy tales and classical music. It gets better and better with each episode and it's only about 2 seasons long.

And yeah, I also agree with the others about Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (When they Cry.) I don't even LIKE scary/bloody shows normally, and Higurashi just pulled me in with its story. I mean, damn it's good.

Eureka Seven is the best anime I've ever seen.

Black Cat is sufficient levels of awesome to entertain cowboy bebop fans.

If you like Rockman, there are about 8 anime series with him.

Claymore is pretty good, the manga is better. Same with Shaman King.

-Oh man, Higurashi. I had nightmares until I finished the first season.. like, nightmares where I we in high school and stabbing my best friends to death in self defense. Great show.

    -Fushigi Yuugi, for epic.

-I would second Princess Tutu, but if you have a low tolerance for ballet and some really weird shit, you probably won't like it. If you can sit through three episodes, you're golden.

-Monster Princess. This is a fun, Love Hina-esque anime execpt everybody is some sort of monster and the boy in the center of it all dies like four times an episode.

-Ayashi no Ceres, by the same artist as Fushigi Yuugi.

-Revolutionary Girl Utena. Again with the weird shit, but also again with the epic. This anime leaves itself open to many different kinds of analysis, and while it may seem battle-of-the-week-ish at points, everything fits in, and every battle lends itself to further consideration. I had to watch it twice to appreciate it.

I know there are some I'm forgetting.

    My glorious list of recommendations

Gurren Lagann -Purely epic mecha action
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei- Downright hilarious comedy
    Cowboy Bebop- obvious
Ouran High School Host Club- One of the more amusing shoujo series
    FLCL- explained in prior posts
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya- decent wacky anime
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion- The main character is a genius of a magnificent bastard who continues to surprise
Macross Frontier-transformable planes/mechs battle in a universe influenced by the power of song
Gokusen- School of delinquents taken to task by a new teacher who is privately the heir to a yakuza gang
Genshiken- group of nerds in college, mockery ensues
SCHOOL RUMBLE- school life comedy involving misunderstood love triangles
    Baccano!- 1930s alchemist/mobster/train battle action
Birdy the Mighty: Decode- sci fi show with a super agent whose body must be inhabited for 1/2 of the day by a high school boy she inadvertently killed
Nodame Cantabile- glorious orchestral music, story of two piano prodigies and the conflict/love between them
Azumanga Daioh- high school madness, hijinks ensue
Bounen no Xamdou- only into its 3rd episode incredibly promising, although difficult to explain. Sci fi, but not in space.
    Eureka 7- fantastic

Great animation, writing, and stories! AND a movie made by Hiyao Miyazaki! MOTHA FUCKA.

Also, watch ALL of Hiyao Miazaki's films, and then check out Akira, Grave of the Fireflies, and the original Ghost in the Shell.

RahXephon is like a NGE that makes a little (very little) more sense and has a better protagonist and, while borderline rip off of NGE, I'd recommend it over NGE to anyone looking for some trippy mindfuck mecha anime anyday of the week.

    I'd recommend:

Abenobashi Mahou Shoutengai (kind of an FLCL-ish over the top comedy)
Death Note (takes a somewhat disappointing turn partway through the series, but the beginning is great)
Dennou Coil (it's like the matrix, but with little girls.)
Ghost Hound (I can't really explain why I liked this so much, but I couldn't stop watching it)
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (seriously, the first two arcs are the creepiest anime ever created)
Infinite Ryvius (Sort of Lord of the Flies in space)
    Kino no Tabi (Gulliver's Travels-ish)
    Kino no Tabi (Watch it!)
    Kino no Tabi (Seriously.)
    Last Exile (steam-punk piloting, etc)
Monster (this might be a bit long at 74(?) episodes, but it's far and away the best drama anime I've ever seen)
Now and Then, Here and There (worst villain ever)
    Paranoia Agent (trippy and short)
Serial Experiments Lain (cannot be recommended enough)

    Some recommendations with caveats:
Allison and Lillia (only 15 episodes out of 26 released yet)
Bokurano (if you like depressing things)
Elfen Lied (if you like gore and nudity it's actually a pretty good story)
Narutaru (from zero to totally fucked up in 13 episodes flat)
5cm/s (an excellent movie; AKA byousoku 5cm)
Hoshi no Koe (another movie; AKA Voices of a Distant Star)
Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku no Basho (movie; AKA The Place Promised in Our Early Days)
Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (movie; AKA The Girl Who Leapt Through Time)

I can't recommend BECK enough. It's the story of a 14 year old kid who meets a guitarist on the street and decides to take up playing guitar. He then joins his band, and the rest of the series is them trying to make it. It's only about 28 ish episodes long, and the voice acting, art, and animation is just too good. Of course, the music is great as well. It doesn't really matter if you watch in English or Japanese, but the characters sound more honest in Japanese, so I'd try for that.

Okay I know it's been mentioned a few times already but Gurren Lagann.

It is really good giant supernatural robot action, but also ends up doing a lot more with characters and themes than you'd ever expect it to, especially during the second half.

There are only about 2 worthless episodes, and those are episode 4 (shitty guest director) and episode 16 (recap episode from start to finish). Other than that, it's one of those animes that I only watch once or twice a year because I enjoy it so much I don't want it to get stale.
