What started as a relatively small service has exploded into a deal I simply couldn't resist. Gametap has a number of PA favorites, including:
Alien Soldier
Baldurs Gate I & II
Beyond Oasis
Civilization IV
Forgotten Worlds! (okay, I admit, this is one of my favorites. Play it!)
Gunstar Heroes
Hitman: Blood Money
Metal Slug 1, 2, 3, 4 and X (I think that's the selection)
Phantasy Star I - IV (!)
Planescape: Torment (!!)
XCOM: UFO Defense (!!!)
Considering it's only 9.99 a month, and the first month is .99 (for a limited time, I'm sure), that's a hell of a deal if you ask me. So I took the plunge and there are so many good games I don't even know where to start.
You've also got your episodic games, like three 'seasons' of Sam and Max, and a new episode of American McGee's Grimm every week, each one a dark and humorous reimagining of Brother's Grimm fairytales.
I'm trying not to sound like a plant here, but it was getting harder and harder for me to resist subscribing until I finally gave in. Too many classics I want to replay/never got a chance to play, like Planescape. The list is growing fast, too, so hopefully I'll have games to play for a long time.
I had the subscription for a while, but recently cancelled. It's not for lacking a good game library - what's there is awesome - and the deal can't be beat.
But I just don't play games on my computer much at all.
Yeah, it's a great deal but unfortunately I'd also like to be able to buy games individually and not needing to have a monthly fee.
At least their free games are a godsend, Psychonauts, Blood Omen 2, Disciples 2, Thief 3, Hitman 2, Bloodrayne, Metal Slug, Rampage, Final Fight, Neo Turf Masters, Bust-A-Move, KoF 98, Fatal Fury, 1942, 1943, Colin McRae Rally 2005, Mr. Robot, X2: The Threat, Commandos 3: Destination Berlin, Cannon Fodder, Warlords Battlecry, realMYST, etc....
PS - Deus Ex GOTY and Daikatana are also free but given their mature rating they can only be downloaded and played by someone with a gold account.
Fallout is also on Gametap, with Fallout 2 coming in the near future. THQ also committed to it, with STALKER, Dawn of War, Company of Heroes, Red Faction, Titan Quest, Supreme Commander, Puzzle Quest and Saint's Row 2 specifically mentioned.
Also, it is the only place where I can legally play every Street Fighter, every King of Fighters, most of the Samurai Shodown series, and Garou: Mark of the Wolves with a decent controller.
It appears the encryption they use is incompatible with 64 bit operating systems. I wanted to play the first Grimm episode but hit that brick wall (it won't even let you install the games). If you hit up the suggestion forum there is a large contingent clamoring for 64 bit support.
Fuck. Looks like nostalgia might force me to waste $10.
Can anyone explain how GT works? Once you have the subscription, you can download/install any of the games? I'm assuming you have to be connected to the internet to play so that the game can verify that you still have an active subscription before starting up? You can't just pay for a month and get some games you want and then keep playing after your subscription ends, correct?
Edit: Bah, nevermind. Thanks Wikipedia.
Like many subscription music services, subscribers have access to the entire library; there is no per-game fee. Games cannot be purchased, and are automatically deactivated when the user unsubscribes from the service. A single registered account provides the option for up to eight screen names, and access to games based on ESRB ratings can be limited on a per-screen name basis. However, although the GameTap software and games can be installed on any number of computers, only two screen names under a single registration can be logged in at a time. Therefore, a subscriber can make up to seven extra "sub-accounts" that friends or family can use on any computer with Gametap installed.[4] Users must have a broadband connection, and cannot play GameTap games while disconnected from the Internet.[5]
I had terrible compatability issues with it when last I had it (about a year ago now). But even then, between Sam and Max and Sealab, I got more than my moneys worth. I just wish that the splinter cell games had worked.
You have to have an internet connection to play anything through Gametap. Some of the games are free (including maybe Cosmic Osmo, I didn't check), and those you can play without being subscribed. The nonfree games you can only play when you have an active subscription, but the first month of subscription costs a buck.

This is good news. I was just about to buy stalker but already have a gametap account.
...and modding it (almost a necessity) would probably be impractical if not impossible, since that shit be encrypted on your hard drive with Gametap, yo.

Yeah, that's my biggest (and only, really) beef with Gametap. Let me download and install mods and fanpatches, man.

Yea I've been waiting for a while for Gametap to get on with it and provide 64bit support. So far they seem to have no interest in it, but that's going to become less viable as time goes on. I mean...it's not like 64bit is some mysterious new technology or something, it's pretty damn common at this point.

Yeah, gametap does some annoying things in the name of piracy prevention. I'll be honest, I could pirate games just as easy as downloading them on gametap. So much of this DRM stuff only ends up hurting legitimate customers. I still think gametap is worth the money though.

The GameTap encryption thing isn't only for piracy prevention. At least, I don't think so.
If you look at your download options, there's an option (turned on by default) to only download part of the game you want to play, the bare minimum to get started. Then, as you play the game, GT continues to download resources in the background. This is why the game hangs if you get too far too fast. It starts to stutter, to loop sound files and even freeze as resources are downloaded on-the-fly.
I think the way GameTap handles files makes this possible. The file you get is essentially a big disc image that gets mounted within software. This mounting software, incidentally, is the 64-bit incompatible part, and it's third-party software licensed by GameTap. This is why they can't update it to be 64-bit compatible - they don't have the source code. If and when the provider updates their software, then it might be possible. At least, I think that's how it works, from reading mods responding to 64-bit complaints.
From here it's all concept - I don't know how it works, but this is how I imagine it. Maybe within that disc image there are placeholders for all the files that haven't been downloaded yet, mostly sound and graphic resources. If the game tried to access those files from outside of the disc image layer, it would probably throw a File Not Found exception and terminate. But GameTap knows that they're there, that you want them, so it just becomes a really long seek time while the resource is downloaded into the correct location.
So denying access to the files is only half the bonus of using their system, I think.
ed: The only free account restriction is that you can only play free games.
Has anyone mentioned that if you go to cancel your 99 cent month before they bill you for a "full price" month they offer you another month completely free? 'Cause they do that

If you ever want to cancel they will offer you a free month, hell if you try to cancel at the end of the free months you may just be offered another free month.
Turner To Sell GameTap
Time Warner says that GameTap parent Turner has decided to sell the subscription and ad-based PC gaming service.
The parent media company's second quarter financial results released this morning showed an $18 million writeoff credited to the decision.
"There is considerable marketplace interest in the GameTap business and brand," said a Turner spokesperson of the pending sale. "We are considering various strategic options, but have reached no final agreement as yet. When there is a resolution, we will announce it."
GameTap, known for its efforts in favor of episodic game content, distributes a variety of titles digitally, like Telltale's Sam & Max adventure games - with a subscription alongside free, ad-supported titles and now also digital PC game retail purchases.
Recently, it also launched the American McGee's Grimm series on the service, and partnered with THQ to distribute the publisher's PC titles online.
However, GameTap also recently closed the doors on its editorial division to focus on its core business; just last month, it also shunted the popular but embattled Myst Online: Uru Live back to its creator, Cyan Worlds.
Maybe whoever buys Gametap will figure out how to make a 64bit encryption scheme so that people who have a semi recent OS could actually play PC games again.
Hi guys, just wanted to post that we're having a free Warhammer 40K Winter Assault tournament to kick off our first bracketed tournament here at GameTap. You don't have to subscribe to GT to enter, just have to create a GT username and post to the forums.
Part 1: A new Gametap thread, Yes thank you(shit I just realized this was necro'ed by baddman)
I am a little disappointed that Psychonauts is no longer free.

Part 2: I think I'm gonna enter this, just because I have only played DoW once and have always wanted to join an RTS tournament. Anyone else in?
Also baddman, The link in section on "How To Play" leads to an expired support session.
1. Use the GameTap Download Manager to ensure you have the FULL game downloaded and ready for January 31st.

It's also worth noting that if you enjoy the service, purchasing a yearly subscription will save you quite a bit. I think I'm paying 60$ per year, which works out to five bucks a month or so.
Also they support usernames within your household for one account, and two of those usernames can use the service simultaneously. Thus my wife and I pay for one subscription, but can both play on Gametap at the same time.
I hope that whoever they sell the service to doesn't ruin it.

I am!
The Sam & Max games are worth it alone... everything else is just icing.

Why aren't any of you mentioning Homeworld?
Also an Infocom text game called Leather Goddesses of Phobos, which is hilarious.
Edit: I would look for myself but Gametap is blocked at work.
Fuck. Looks like nostalgia might force me to waste $10.
