Savage 2 for $ 9.99 on Steam

I tried to do a search on this game but didn't find a post on it, so here it goes.

Savage 2 is currently on Steam for $ 9.99 till August 4th. If Team Fortress 2 and Natural Selection were forced to mate, Savage 2 would be the result. It is a RTS/FPS hybrid with a commander leading each team in a RTS-style, while the other players take on class roles like workers and so forth. As you kill more, you level up and increase your stats for that ONE match.

The other interesting thing about this game is the melee combat system. It's essentially rock-paper-scissors where you can perform three melee actions. It's kind of weird to describe, so here is a chart from the main site:

gp_mflow.gif

Also there are persistent items, meaning you get to "keep" items throughout the matches that help you out, such as

Shall we start a PA group?

How did Savage 2 turn out? I remember when the beta was going on people were not happy with it.

You can go to the savage website and pick up a free trial if you really need to know.

But I might be down for this. I really liked what they had in Savage 2 beta, and since then the balance has gotten much better, along with great improvements to the combat system. Having this game on steam will be a great value as well, considering how community based the game is already.

Yeah the first one was really awesome. Like my post above says, the beta for part 2 didn't go well with people so I hesitated on getting it. A many-month hesitation. But I imagine it was patched up to be just fine. If there's a demo I'll have to try it before putting down this $10.

Hey. Hey. I like it. It has a small community like...[tiny]this small[/tiny] but is fun once you get the hang of things. Combat is fun but sometimes frustrating. It is also pretty innovative, if you like FPS, 3rd perseon action games, or RTS you will find something to enjoy.

Lies and trickery. You must have played during the beta. The beta they released for Savage 2 was really their Alpha. They didnt update the beta for a long time, making people think that's how it'd be in the real game, horribly bugged and terrible. But two weeks before release, they made a massive patch for the game that fixed most of the problems with the game, and they continue to make it better every day.

    So in other words,

    :^::^::^:

I actually played after release. I pre-ordered and forgot about it until I got an e-mail one day. I was actually really excited to try it out. Buggy or not, the game is bland and unexciting. The matchmaking system is horrible beyond belief. It's next-to-impossible to find games with balanced teams because everyone is too busy points-whoring.

It's innovative enough, but unlike Savage 1, the sequel really feels like it's spread too thin. You can't take a below average shooter and a below average RTS, toss them together, and expect it to be anything except below average.

Well I plunged $10 to it, only to experience obscenely long load times to prepare the loading screen, followed by the actual loading screen, then skipping to the last tutorial part, which, unpon completetion, boots me out of the game. Yeah.

The actual gameplay seems alright so far though, I'll try out online next... if any EU servers are around.

I have to say that those who disliked the beta, much like yours truly, get it. They changed so much stuff such as the interface, getting rid of the summoners, and other tweaks.

It aint' TF2, but damn close.

I've been hearing that there has been some issues with the Steam client of Savage 2. It ought to be fixed by the end of the week, though.

The Steam client doesn't matter. Once you buy it, you can use your account info with the normal Savage 2 client as well (but not vice versa).

If I could barely run the tutorial during beta but the actual game bugged out horribly enough that I couldn't even join a side and spawn, does that mean that I won't be able to play the game now, or have they optimized it since then?

I think the most important question is, do people play it?

I might be willing to try it out again after the mediocre beta, but if the servers are empty, a game that constantly requires at least 32 players (to be any fun) would be kind of a waste of money.

Well, the server list is split into official and unofficial. The official servers are about 10, I think 2 for each continent (US, EU and Aus at least). There's also some EU beginner servers with levels locked, but as far as I know that's a bit buggy and I could gain lots of levels, I dunno.

At peak times they're all full, which is a good and bad thing I guess, tight community but never a server to join in.

Overall the game's pretty fun so far, but pretty buggy. I would strongly recommend getting the client from the official site, as the Steam one seems to crap itself during map loads. This can cause the game to load up your previous map environment but have the 'terrain map' from the next map, which makes your character float up and down, clipping through buildings and hills.

Here's my important question. For those who played part one and enjoyed it (either briefly or over a long period of time) how does part 2 compare? Better, worse, a mix?

Well I would say it is marginally less fun than S1 was. The RTS aspect is a little dumbed down (no tech trees) and is more focused on buffing teammates as they run around. Melee system is fun but aggravating at times. My biggest problem is just the fact it is really hard to get in a server reliably.

    Personally I think it's a step up.

Yes, commanding is heavily dumbed down. It's not a tech tree, it's a tech stick. Very, very linear, but it does serve the purpose of not overwhelming new players and very hard to screw up.

The biggest problem I've had with S1 was the broken balance. Beasts would usually win the match because they can go across the map within minutes and rush. Not only that, but the unit tiers were completely messed up. A predator would always, always beat a nomad, no matter what. Some of the maps were also bugged as beasts climbed onto unpassable hills and build in that area.

As for the commanding part, way too many stalemate matches. Commanders would build tower after tower and matches could last several hours. The only way to win these matches is the predictable cheese method: Gateway with beasts, insane amount of buffs on humans.

S2 fixed most of these problems. While a little dumbed down, it does benefit in the long run. I actually find the sides to be very well balanced with their own style and as you can tell from the stats on the site, the winning percentage difference isn't huge between the two.

To make stalemates even less of an occurance, you need to have an upkeep and if you start running out of mines, your upkeep won't be met and suddenly your buildings can be taken down quite easily. So there is an actual timelimit.

My only problem I have with the game is the lack of maps and the unit balance on the hellborne units. Basically, super units that are hard to kill. While the demonic ones I don't mind, there is a certain unit that you get by getting "parts" of him, getting 15 kills, and transforming into him. This unit is absolutely ridiculous as he can do insane stuff like keep burning someone with his sword, damage people around him, "spin" like a tornado making him untouchable, teleport across the map, and heal himself for each kill. It's become so bad that some players actually have an honor code on NOT to use him when the team is winning.

Besides that complaint, it's much better then S1
