Does anyone have any experience with one? I need to get myself a cheap laptop for work and school, and I don't really want to spend much more than a few hundred dollars. Is the thing usable for general clerical stuff + browsing?

This thread in the Techie forum should have a lot of good info:

Yeah, use that thread. I've got one and it's great, though. Personally I wouldn't be able to deal with a 7" screen, but the ones with 9" or larger screens are nice.

Oh, and you're going to want a USB keyboard if you're using it as a desktop replacement.

I have one and it's very nice. It is possible to install Windows XP on it, but unless you have certain software you need to run on the thing that won't work with Linux, there isn't really a need. It comes with Pidgin, Skype, Open Office, etc.

You should consider the Acer Aspire One. It's about 350 (Canadian) and looks much better spec'd than the eeepc.

    Huh?

It's got the same processor, the same screen size, half the RAM, and a much smaller battery. The SSD in the SSD version is far smaller and the spinning platter hard drive in the other version cuts battery life even further.

I mean, it costs less to make up for it, and so it might be a good deal depending on how much you're willing to spend, but it is in no way "better spec'd"

If you are going to be doing a lot of word processing on it, investing in a usb keyboard like Daedalus mentioned would be a wise choice. For just doing clerical stuff and browsing, it's a good machine. It's no way a desktop replacement though.

I have a 900 which I use for word processing, netsurfing and playing old games. No problem for me, and I'm a biggish guy. I think if I was typing up someone else's work (and so typing very fast and not wanting to worry about errors) it would be a problem, but so far it's fine. I'm posting from it now.

The 901 does look a lot better, but it's dearer.

honestly, the only real advantage the 901 has over the 900 is battery life (4-6 hours vs. 2 or so), so if that's not important to you you might want to take the money-saving route.
