Prove it.

Type in your address- be sure to include hometown, which it would help if you told us if it's not in your profile (your address you obviously want to keep to yourself)- and you will get a 'walk score' from 0 to 100. Higher is better.

Also, be sure to tell us of any possible quirks in the scoring system. For example, my 18 probably skews high because the place it classified as the closest grocery store is a one-room shithole attached to a dive bar. Both places are run by a crochety old man who would much rather be watching NASCAR and FOX News if it weren't for these damned kids. He runs the bar better than the store.

(If this thread dies horribly, blame Quid. He made me do it.)

I have a new soccer blog The Minnow Tank. Reading it psychically kicks Sepp Blatter in the bean bag.

I got a 66 which I think is slightly lower than necessary. The bus system here kinda sucks but I'm only a few block from most places I need on a daily basis and I also have access to the amenities on base. I also don't see the necessity of bars or coffee shops.

I got a score of 38. I only drive to work because I'm lazy (and waking up at four after going to sleep at 9-10pm isn't fun) but other than that can't really think of many places I can't bike to get to.

Where I grew up I was 1.9 miles away from what amounted to a 7-11. Everything else was many more miles away.

Where my parents are living right now, they are 1.47 miles away from edge the shittier of the two towns they're in between.

There are no walking paths between these, but there are hella hills.

    I won't bother because I don't have nor want a car. I haven't had one for about 7 years and I don't miss it.

Fuck driving and fuck car maintenance and fuck other drivers and double-fuck these gas prices.

I more or less walk everywhere unless I need to take a bus or train and then I take a bus or train.

    71.

There's a small shopping complex near where I live, with a big grocery store, some restaurants, a barber shop and a dry cleaner.

Most other things don't really apply to me though. They gave points for having a gym near my house, but it's a kid's gym. Similarly, there's an elementary school several blocks away. A donut store is listed as a coffee shop. Etcetera.

I discovered some places on the map though and I'll check them out this week.

52, which is overestimating things a bit since I live across from a school and the "clothing and music" item is a tiny little hole in the wall.

That and work is 20 miles away, and impossible to live close to given that its 6 miles wide.

That holds at most one week of groceries for a single person.

    Presuming you bought no liquids.

Personally, when I hit up north, I'm tossing my car and getting into one of those car rental clubs. It's a proper city, so I should be able to avoid car usage most of the time, but hell if I'm backpacking my groceries. Especially with my soda habits. D:

    6. I currently have no car. It indeed does suck.

Closest grocery store is 1.5 miles away, and the usual temperature out is around 100 degrees.

I've actually managed to jam two bags of groceries into it and clipped the detergent to the outside with the little clip majigger.

Mind, I understand perfectly well that this doesn't work for everyone.

International airport. It isn't actually that wide, but it might as well be between all the parking and restricted access areas.

Heh. It told me to check my address and try again. I know where I live, evil liberal supercomputer. Download a map from this year.

In all honesty, walking to the store/shopping isnt the problem. Work is still a good 20 miles away, and thats a walk I can't do four times a week.

edit: upon picking an older, close street I got a 32.

I got a 40, Car-Dependent, but yea, I think it's a wild misinterpretation to think this is a judgment on whether or not you need a car. It would only work for that if you worked at a grocery store and got your education at a grade school. It's just indicating how much is within a casual stroll of your house.

I use a Project Red tote bag, which I use for basically any time I go out in public. Car keys, (personal) groceries, wallet, book or two, dump it in the bag.

Basically a man purse, but hey, not like I'm trying to impress anyone.

    98.

Of course, to walk to all these places (of which Tae Kwon Do academies are counted as schools) I'd often have to cross through what is widely regarded as the worst neighborhood in Cincinnati. Not something that is impossible to do, but not something I'd do at night or with a bag of purchased goods.

Well, there's the thing. If you DID take the casual strolls to those places, instead of driving (or cycling), ask yourself how much driving you'd still have to do to conduct your life.
