Find the PSN game port

UselesswarriorUselesswarrior Registered User regular
I am trying to find out what port my recent purchase, Soul Calibur 4, is trying to use for hosting. PSN seems very deregulated in terms of port usage, allowing the individual games to decide what port to use. This is coupled with the fact that there seems to be nothing online on this. I could contact Namco, but it might take awhile to get to someone who could answer my question and, being a resonablly geeky person, like to figure stuff out like this for myself.

Now if my Playstation 3 was a Pc, it would be very easy to see what was going on traffic wise, but it is not. That is ok because packets are mostly not getting past the router level. I imagine I send out packets that say I am hosting, and I never get any further packets querying my hosting session because my firewall kills them.

So how do I go about this. I am using X-wrt on my router, which offers plenty of power and configuration options, but unfortunatly, it doesn't seem to keep running logs of my firewall. If I was using a full PC, I would install snort and see what the hell was going on, but alas that doesn't seem to be an option. It could be that I am just tired but have been unable to come up with any solutions. Anyone got any suggestions?

I know it's not really what you were asking, but have you tried DMZ'ing the PS3 for the time being to see if the ports are the problem?

I grabbed this from somewhere else:
    For the PLAYSTATION®Network:
    • TCP Ports: 80, 443, 5223
    • UDP Ports: 3478, 3479, 3658
PLAYSTATION®3 Remote Play (via the Internet) requires:
    • If the router in use supports UPnP, enable the router’s UPnP function.
    • If the router does not support UPnP, you must set the router’s port forwarding to allow communications to the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system from the Internet.
    • The port number that is used by remote play is TCP Port: 9293

Not sure how useful any of that is to you. Otherwise you could try to pick up the traffic coming from the PS3 by using a computer at the same switch level as the PS3 and using Wireshark.

Haven't read the X-Wrt docs, but can you enable UPnP on your router? That might fix it.

Alternatively, try emailing/posting in the Namco support forums - given the prevelance of wireless routers being gifted by ISPs, you'll probably get a quicker response than expected.

I've used wireshark before, but how easy is something like that to set up? Essentially it sounds like a man in the middle approach, so I should be able to see all traffic between the router/ps3, am I right? That sounds like a good idea, I just don't know how to implement it.
