What's a good chess game? I'm looking for something I could play on the computer that would help increase my skill level. You know something that can teach me stuff.

I had Chess Master like 3000 for Windows 95 and it was pretty good, but looking for something that runs a bit smoother under XP. (it has weird graphicals issuses).

Bookup and Fritz are probably the best options for actual learning of openings, etc. You can learn the strengths of each possible move during an opening, learn the different kinds of openings, play out sections of professional / grand master games, get hints from pros on each move and so on.

Chess Titans on Vista (anything other than Basic I think) is a great chess program. The computer is fairly intelligent and it has nice graphics, especially compared to every other chess game I've played. While it wont teach you anything, you can "learn" by playing with it.

Chessmaster XI - Art of Learning
I like it at least, moreso than the old iterations of Chessmaster.
It has a nice training program.

I haven't tried Chessmaster XI yet, but I love X. It has a lot of great tutorials taught by Josh Waitzkin, the kid the movie Searching For Bobby Fischer was about. I learned quite a lot from it. It also has replays of famous matches with commentary. I need to check out XI, I wasn't aware it was out.
