Welcome (Back) to School, Son
EA's not-as-popular but more fun football franchise is back again for the 2009 edition. And we've got shiny new features for you to play with! For the uninitiated, NCAA Football 09 is a sport simulation game featuring 120+ actual college football teams. However, since these are not professional athletes, no real names are used in the game except for the announcers!
What's it all about, Jim?
Well that depends on what you want to experience. There's several different game modes involved.
Play Now
If you're with friends or in a rush, this is probably the mode for you. Jump into a game with your favorite college team, or your alma mater, it doesn't matter, and set up a quick game to enjoy.
Dynasty
Take control of the squad as head coach, in charge of practice, recruitment, and playcalling in this mode, the brother of Madden's season mode. College is a whole different animal, however, as you have to find top talents and pursue them rather than simply draft them. Persuade a student athlete to commit to your school, the higher the caliber, the better you'll look. And then put them on the field and win yourself a National Championship!
Campus Legend
Be the big man on campus in this mode, creating your own player (or using an existing one) to navigate through the highs and lows of a college football career. You get to choose between all the good positions on the field (sorry, O Linemen, DTs, Kickers, and Punters) and then play through your senior year High School State Championship playoffs! Give it your all, and the better you do, the higher your prospect ranking. Then, commit to a school and work your way up the depth chart. Practice, practice, practice! But don't neglect your studies! Below a 2.0 GPA will net you a suspension till you've raised your marks. Make big plays, achieve your set goals, and earn legend points, on the way to becoming a college football icon. Will you leave early and opt for the pro draft or stay for your senior season? The choice is yours.
Mini-Games
This year, two new mini-games join the list: Horse and Special Teams Challenge. In HORSE, you set the ball anywhere you like from the 50 yard line to the goal line, and from either side of the field. Then adjust the wind as you wish. Once you're set, try to kick a field goal. The object is to make a field goal that your opponent cannot, thus earning them a letter. Five letters earned makes you a loser.
Special Teams challenge is a twist on the Tug-Of-War minigame from previous years (which is still included in the game). The object is to punt the ball into your opponent's territory and pin them back, or return their punt, so that you can get close enough to score a field goal. Blocking the kick and returning it for a score is an option as well.
In Tug-Of-War, you play both sides of the ball, one play at a time. You have to drive the ball as far as you can, the object being to score. Wherever you're stopped if you do not score is where your opponent takes over on offense. Bring your defensive skills and keep them from scoring.
Bowling is a fun little game. You're placed on offense, at the opponent's 10 yard line. You have to run two plays per frame. Every yard you gain is a point. If you score a touch down on your first try in the frame its a strike. If you score one on your second, its a spare. Try to bowl a perfect game!
Lastly, the Option Dash mini game scores you on many different actions of the option. Fake pitches, successful pitches, spins, jukes, trucks, stiff arms, hurdles, and broken tackles all net you bonus points. You're also rewarded for gaining yards and scoring touch downs, of course. Break the high score!
Mascot Mash Up
Just like Play Now, but instead of players, the mascots take the field, complete with goofy costumes and exaggerated jukes and moves. Not all teams are available for this mode.
Online Play
Online play has been a big part of EA Sports' games, especially this generation, and NCAA Football 09 is not lacking. You can either take on an opponent mano y mano in ranked and unranked play, or you have the option of starting and joining online dynasties. Online dynasties are like regular dynasties, only now you're competing with other real live coaches. Outrecruit and outplay your opponents to victory.
Gamertags!
Drop your gamertag in the post if you want to play in ranked/unranked matches, or join the online dynasty I will soon be starting up if this post generates enough interest!

EDIT: Amazon has a seller that has this listed as brand new for 40 dollars + 6 dollars shipping
Online dynasties are neat, but the lack of several features that existed in the versions of the game that came out 3-4 years ago for the original XBox shows laziness on the part of EA.
Not them mention the obvious lack of any sort of QA on the game. There's already two patches on the way.
But if you go with online leagues for Madden then I'll be in!
So, that thread will be coming.
