Macbook won't start

Hi guys, got a macbook problem
It's running Leopard, and it's not mine so I'm not entirely sure what happened for this to start.
The macbook on start will either get to the desktop but I won't be able to launch any programs, or it just won't get there. Other times it gets to the blue background, then spotlight crashes and airport utility, and won't go any further.
I've put in my OS X disk and verified disk permissions (some are wrong). every time they break again.
Any ideas on what I could do?
