Classic 8-bit Gaming: Archon

Do any of you guys remember the 8-bit classic (imho), Archon? I still fire up CCS64 from timt to time to play it with my Bro. I've just seen (over on RetreoRemake.com) that, at long last, a remake has been released!

I've just given it a whirl. It's two player only at the moment, and it's a little rough in a few places, but it plays just like the original

I'd love to see a fully 3D Archon remake...

Archon was awesome. The first time I played it, it was on an Atari 800 at a friend's house. Some time later, I played it on the NES in the form of one of those "52 games in 1!!!!1!!" cartridges, and i might've even rented the game later on.

I'm downloading this now.

Same here - I first played it on the Atari 800 XL. I also bought Archon and Archon II: Adept on the Amiga, but the conversions just didn't match the 8-bit originals.

I never did get to play it, but i always assumed Wrath Unleashed was a successor of sorts.

I played Archon on NES, and never could win but i always had a blast somehow. It sort of skewed my understanding of chess for a few years though.

I had high hopes for Wrath Unleashed but, for me, it just didn't quite work. I still haven't played "The Unholy War". I'll have to hunt it down...

Did you get a black screen by any chance? I had that and was told to change the movie setting (in the INI file to 0). Apparently this has been fixed in the next build, along with numerous improvements (still no single player yet though ).

Weird. My friend was just telling me a couple days ago how this was one of his favorite NES games, and I had never even heard of it.

i played the Unholy War ... it was a decent enough game, but I felt it just didn't capture the true glory of 2D Archon ... Much like Sonic, Archon doesn't translate well into 3d.

I never played Archon since I didn't have a commodore. I did however play plenty of Archon Ultra an enchanced remake that was released on PC (Dos) in 1994.

Archon was a solid C64 game, my older cousin used to always smash my face in. Good times.. sorta.

I loved playing this on Apple IIe. Wrath Unleashed was interesting but just didn't have any staying power for me.

I was going to mention that Archon Ultra is great. It looks like greeble beat me to it.

I didn't like Archon Ultra. Sure it looked the part, but the battles themselves were sloooooow.

I like the Archon: Evolution remake because the playability seems to match the original perfectly, and it offers updated visuals.

I did but alas, I have no one to play it with.

I guess I'll just have to wait for the single player build.
