What's going on here? There's some stargate thing on TV that has half the cast of Farscape in and they're being attacked by Lego toys.

Ark of Truth is the Straight to DVD movie that was made to wind up the "Stargate: SG1" Ori Story Arc after the 10th season ended and they decided not to do an 11th.

Stargate: Continuum is another Straight to DVD movie recently released that somewhat deals with the Baal Story Arc.

So did Stargate just poach lead cast members from Farscape or was this some sort of Terminator Vs Predator style cross over thing?

They were working on the show there towards the end, replacing cast members that left.

Well, Farscape had been done for a couple of years at the time, but they were on the last couple of seasons of SG-1 (as different characters, not a crossover).

I keep seeing the odd episode of SG-1 and thinking to myself "I'd probably really enjoy watching these, I should get the box sets sometime". Am I dangerously misguided?

Not at all. I really enjoyed watching them. Things are a bit clumsy near the beginning of season 1, and then later (season 8?) when the new cast members join, as the writers and the actors try to find their characters. I think that if you liked Farscape, you should at least give it a chance. Maybe rent the first 2 seasons before buying them though.

    I didn't like Farscape :D

But Stargate seems pretty dissimilar (barring a few familiar faces).

yeah, i heard it was a whole clusterfuck once MacGyver left SG1, and they kept adding more seasons to the show. They finished the main villain arc in season 8 and still had two more seasons, in which they just replaced people.

It doesn't seem too bad a show. My friend who likes SG1 as much as I like TNG showed me this one about a time loop.

I fail to see how this is a H/A topic, but I'll bite.

I used to tease my older brother relentlessly for watching SG-1 years ago. A tv show based off a medicore sci-fi movie with Richard Dean Anderson? That screams failure. Then one night I actually sat down and watched an episode, I think it was in it's sixth season at the time, and then I watched another, and another... and I began to think to myself, you know this show really isn't that bad, it's actually pretty good. So I went out and bought all the boxed sets released at the time and caught my self up with the story and became a fan ever since.

As an above poster mentioned, Ark of Truth wraps up the Ori storyline that started in Season 9 and was not finished when Season 10 completed its run and the show was cancelled (MGM or Sci-Fi decided not to renew the series for an 11th season in interest of buying other shows.) Stargate: Atlantis had also been running for a few seasons now which is a show that ran parallel to SG-1 in another galaxy in the lost city of Atlantis. (Atlantis's first two seasons had a lot of staleness (Lt. Ford), but Season 3 on has been pure gold (presumably because most of the writing and focus that was on SG-1 is now on Atlantis) and I've been enjoying Atlantis far more than SG-1.)

The SG-1 story was not complete when the show was cancelled so they did get greenlit by MGM to make direct to DVD movies to continue the story, I think they were approved for 2-3. After Ark of Truth, Continuum was launched just last week to finish the Goa'uld (Baal) storyline. The creators of Stargate would love to bring SG-1 series back for an 11th season if a major network would pick it up, but there hasn't been any interest.

For now the Stargate focus has been on the Atlantis series and possibly a third direct to DVD SG-1 movie and possibly another new series called Stargate Universe.

Theres a whole ton of information about Stargate over at www.gateworld.net it's got all the latest news and wiki info.

Ok, I think I might seriously consider starting on the box sets. I liked the original movie anyway, and every time I stop and watch a random episode, it seems to hold my attention.

SG-1's pretty good, I think its biggest flaw is that for the first 3, maybe 4 seasons, they really sucked at season finales.

Just want to add my vote here that you should definately give it a shot - I had caught a couple random episodes a few years ago, ended up downloading & watching the whole series (SG-1 and Atlantis) start-to-finish over the course of several months, and bought all the box sets.

As has been said, season 1 is rather slow, but by the time you get about 50-75% through season 2, it definately starts to pick up. If you plan to watch Atlantis also, you should ideally watch up till the start of season 8 of SG-1 first, or at least the last 2 episodes of season 7. Atlantis itself is in its 5th season atm.

A word of advice, if you browse Gateworld, and their forums in particular - a lot of the posters are very, very, fanatical and nitpicky....Not really worth it most of the time, unless you want to be annoyed and/or depressed.
