I'm visiting Lille, France next month to see family and I was wondering if anyone had any tips. The family member I am meeting will have just moved there and I suspect won't know a damm thing about the local tourist circuit. So, has anyone been there and have any ideas?

I have little experience with the city personally, but some quick searching turned on the following things:

    1) Lille has the #2 art museum in France, after the Louvre. Among other things, it has a collection of dutch and french masters (Rubens, van Gogh, Monet)

    2) Lille is apparently a student town. Nearly 100.000 people study in or around it (and the town isn't that big). There should be quite a bit of partying and affordable dining as a result.

    3) Apparently there's a yearly faire in the 1st week of september that's a big deal.

It's pretty easy to get to Paris by train from Lille. So you could always do a day trip to Paris.
