No Sound in Opera, IE

I have sound in Firefox and in Windows, but not in Opera or IE.

Clicking the speaker icon by the clock causes this to happen:

I haven't used either of these browsers in quite a while, but would like to be able to have sound when I do. I haven't done anyhting to my computer in months. Any ideas what could have happened?

Can you hear things like music? I find it hard to believe the sound *only* doesn't work in your web browsers. I'd try installing the newest drivers for your sound card.

That box will only appear if your sound card drivers are screwed up. Check Device Manager (right click on my computer, go to properties, hardware tab, device manager) under the Sound and Audio devices and see if you see anything. There's a rollback driver button that might work.

So this what I am getting now. I can't try to play music now, my wife is asleep and our three room apartment is too small for that.

I tried to update the drivers and my computer searched itself or something, probably waiting for a cd. It made grumbly computer noises for 10 minutes with no result, no web page loading or anything. The problem is my computer is nearly 7 years old. I have moved many times in those seven years and no longer have a clue what happened to the bundle of discs that came with my computer are.
